I just was on it and I was able to view a 1850 and a 1870 census, I have lots more to do. Hmmm. The very first time I clicked on "image" when I found a name of interest it took me to a pay per view site. :( Kathy > > > FamilySearch.org is testing their new search engine. Just tried it out, Works well found information on my O'Briens (I already have this, but nice to know others can find it). I would recommend it to you. Does anyone else find it odd that they only usually look at 1/4 or less of the person's family tree? I realize it's hard to fit much into an hour, but I usually am left feeling like the person in question now thinks they know all about their family's history when in fact they've only traced a very small fraction of it. For example Susan Sarandon on the last one. She ends up saying she's from Tuscany. Well, from what we saw we know for sure her grandmother's father was from Tuscany and possibly her grandmother's mother. That's only 1/8 or at most 1/4 of her family history. Perhaps I'm nitpicking too much, but I never say "my family's from Scotland". I say "my Rennie family is from Scotland." To me it just feels like they're disowning/ignoring most of their family history and claiming a small piece as their whole history. Also, I see they tracked down Susan's grandmother's husbands nieces, but did they trace her grandmother's brother and sister, Rita and Joseph Rigali? Seems to me if they have living descendants they should be able to tell her more about Anita. I am a very detail-oriented person, so maybe it's just my neurotic "wanting to know everything" that makes me feel like what they're giving us in the hour isn't as much as it could be. Like how many churches did they have to search in Italy before they found her great-grandfather? Did they even check the naturalization records in the US to see if he said when he came and where he was from? I just tried two searches that yield results on the existing page that yielded me nothing on the beta page - and I sent them the feedback form telling them so. I thought this was odd also, but going back to the beginning of the show, her mother was concerned about what happened to her mother, so maybe that is why they focused on her. I was wondering all through the show about the siblings. Another thing was how easy they found Tuscany. Both Susan and her son go to the NYPL and immediately find the area her ggrandfather was from by just the surname. Oh, for it to be that easy! > Also, I see they tracked down Susan's grandmother's husbands nieces, but > did they trace her grandmother's brother and sister, Rita and Joseph Rigali? > Seems to me if they have living descendants they should be able to tell her > more about Anita. > > -- Pat Connors, Sacramento CA http://www.connorsgenealogy.com

I much prefer the genealogy segments with Prof. Henry Louis Gates on PBS. Faces of America and African American Roots (I think that's the name?) are amazing. Although I still watch "Who Do You Think You Are". How could I not?, lol. Hi Janet - agreed -but still watch with kleenex in hand wishes for two things: 1) to get the show to look at my one very controversial "brick walls" from the Revolutionary War; 2) that the ancestry.com fairy would wave a wand and hook me up with what appears to be an unimaginable host of resources. I think any of us that have slaved over our family histories know you don't just hop in a car and show up to "voila" you're in the right place, and somebody's waiting there with your tree and your answers. That being said though, can you imagine how cool it is to get to go to the places and see as much in person as the subjects get to see?? I'm so happy for them, and envious beyond description. karen (green with envy in Oklahoma) -------------------------------------------------- From: "Janet Truncali" <truncali@warwick.net> Sent: Friday, April 23, 2010 1:37 PM To: <myperidot@verizon.net>; <nynewyor@rootsweb.com>; <1.judyh@fuse.net>; <NY-IRISH@rootsweb.com>; <NYC-ROOTS@rootsweb.com>; <MizScarlettNY@aol.com>; <NYBrooklyn@rootsweb.com> Subject: Re: [NY-IRISH] [NYNEWYOR] [BKLYN] FRIDAYS TV "Who Do You Think YourAre?" > Hi, > After each broadcast of the show "Who Do You Think You Are", I tell my > husband that the program is a one hour commercial for Ancestry.com. I have been researching my heritage for 10+years. I have walked cemeteries, visited town halls, went to Ellis Island, Used the LDS Library and talked to many family members and am still searching trying to break down several stonewalls. This program is really an advertisment for Ancestry, which I belong to The reseacher does all the work using the LDS Library. It makes no mention of the foot work or history lessons learned. I have traveled overseas to 2 countries to find my family history. It also makes no mention of the amount of money you can spend doing your research. I watched the first couple of programs and decided not to watch more. Hi, After each broadcast of the show "Who Do You Think You Are", I tell my husband that the program is a one hour commercial for Ancestry.com. There is just no other way to look at it. Ancestry is the only resource that is referred to during the broadcast, plus they have their own commercial time. The public gets hit twice, whether they know it or not. I enjoy seeing where people come and their family history, but I would like to know of all the resources used to get the info. Just my opinion. I would love to have such information to use, However, I cannot attend this Seminar. Is there any way Dan Lynch can put this information out for all to see and use.
