    1. [NY-IRISH] Calvary Cemetery in Queens/NYC
    2. Michael Cassara
    3. Hi all, Happy Memorial Day to you and your loved ones. I spent the day visiting Calvary Cemetery, which is just down the street from where I live in Sunnyside, Queens (NY). As I was walking through the absolutely massive cemetery grounds (over 3 million burials) - it dawned upon me that it might be worth bringing the cemetery to the list's attention. Though I'm sure many of you are already familiar, it might prove to be an untapped resource for others. Before I dig in to the relevance to the NY-IRISH list, I had a truly extraordinary thing happen to me when I first visited the cemetery this Easter - you can read more about that here: http://michaelcassara.blogspot.com/2010/04/easter-2010.html But in getting to know the cemetery over the last few months, it's really a goldmine for genealogists - particularly those of us with NYC-Irish roots. Many of the monuments include detailed genealogical information - and many of the Irish monuments include information on the deceased's birthplace. While there's by no means a guarantee that your ancestors gravestone will include such information - it's certainly worth looking into - particularly for those of you who have hit brick walls in terms of finding your ancestral County, etc. Calvary served the Catholic communities of New York City (Manhattan, Queens, etc.) from the mid-19th Century through the present day. Irish and Italian names make up the grand majority of interments. The cemetery office can do lookups over the phone, but they do NOT have a computerized database, or an index by surname - so you must have the date of death so they can search their chronological files. Should you find an ancestor buried there, one option to get more information is to get the detailed plot location from the cemetery office and create a memorial with FindAGrave.com. Once you've created the free memorial on FindAGrave (including plot location), then click on "Request A Photo". There are many of us in the immediate area who volunteer and take photographs (for free, of course) on a regular basis - perhaps it will lead to a genealogical goldmine! All my best, Michael Cassara cassara.genealogy@gmail.com

    3. Thank you, Pat. I would like to remember my father's brother Charles Fagan, who was killed in France in World War I, September 1918. He was a wagoner and was killed by a sniper. 2. Like Tee I remember our soldiers past and present almost everyday. Pat and Tee remembering loved ones is a wonderful thing and I believe helps us keep our ancestors in our hearts. My uncle, Staff Sgt. Thomas L. Durkin of the Army Air Corps was killed on Jan 24, 1944, he was a gunner. His plane was shot down and from reports I found just recently he was shot and went down with his plane, some of the other crewmen survived and were captured. He was buried in Liege, Belgium but his brother went overseas and brought him home. He is buried in the Long Island NY National cemetery. The other sad thing that happened that day is that his mother, my grandmother suffered a stroke that night, she turned to her husband while in bed and told him that "something happened to Tommy". She suffered three more stroked after that and according to her other children was never the same. Three of his brothers Walter, Joseph and Edward and three brothers-in-law, Edward Quinn, Vincent Janniello, and Arthur "Willy" Williams also fought in World War ll they all survived and I am happy so say they lived to be old men. Many of my cousins and my son, have served in the military and for that I am forever thankful. There will be a "National Moment of Remembrance'' that will occur at 3 p.m. (local time) on Memorial Day for all our veterans past and present and for all the men and women that are serving our country, so please think of them at this time and always. 3. This maybe the week of remembering .... But I think of my veteran ancestors everyday . One most of all was in the Civil War Thomas Henry Dennison of the 123rd CoF out of Washington county NY . I only found out about him 10 years ago . He died in 1884 at the Willard state Hospital, buried in a unmarked and unknown location in there cemetery. He was never acknowledged as a Civil War Vet from 1884 to 2000 When my mother and I took it upon ourselves to contact the VA and received a brass plack for him. 3. This week in the United States, we take the time to remember our veterans, those still alive, those of our many war dead and/or those injured. Those who gave their time and lives so we could be free. I would like for all who would like to take the time out of their busy lives and dedicate an email or emails to a relative or someone they were close to and tell our various readers from around the world about their contribution. I am going to start with my first cousin, George James Connors. It is a cousin I never met. He died December 14, 1944 in Antwerp, Belgium and is buried there in Henri-Capelle Permanent Cemetery with many other heroes. George was the oldest son of my father's brother and was in the Navy and was attached to the USS Christopher Gadsen. The ship was charged with bringing in supplies for the upcoming major Battle of the Bulge. You can read about it here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_the_Bulge The ship had just docked and unloaded and the crew were given liberty and George and three others took off into the city of Antwerp and went to a movie theater. The lights went out and movie was about to begin when they were hit by a V-2 rocket. Over 600 died and only one of the four sailors lived and is still alive and has written to me about my cousin. I wish I had met, cousin George who was buried on my birthday. Maybe someday I can get over to Belgium to pay my proper respects to our family's hero. -- Pat Connors, Sacramento, CA http://www.connorsgenealogy.com

    3. For those who have submitted a name or two on the various Surname Registries on my website, if your email address has changed, don't forget to submit a new form. All you have to do is put your name, email address and the surname on the form and put CHANGE in the email address box so I will see why you submitting a new form. I will pick up the change when I do my next update which will be in June. I get emails all the time from people who are disappointed when they can't contact some because the old email address doesn't work anymore. You never know if the person who is trying to contact you, may be related or just may have some info that will help you with your family research. -- Pat Connors, Sacramento, CA http://www.connorsgenealogy.com

    2. Sandra J Hawley
    3. Another possible research tool is to find find vital or church records of siblings or children if known. I found where my ggg grandparents came from in Tipperary from a death record of one of their children from a church in Wisconsin. It stated that the father was born in Newcastle, Co Tipperary and the mother in Grange, Co Tipperary. This led to many other bits of information. I don't know if this sort of thing would be listed on marriage or birth records. 1. [NY-IRISH] Updated Irish Gleanings web page - Connecting people to townlands in Ireland
    2. Sheila
    3. I've have been researching the US State Department records at the US National Archives and located some paper documents that identify the Irish townland connected to a person as well as a location in the United States and names of relatives. This month, I have added names, dates and locations from two collections of paper Passport Applications - 1907 to 1921. These documents are not yet on Ancestry. About 525 items come from the "Emergency Passport Applications" filed through the US Embassy in London, England. About 100 items come from the "Application by the Wife of a Member of the Naval or Military Forces of the US for a Certificate to Depart for the US." The site is at http://sites.google.com/site/irishgleanings/ These records exist for only a small number of Irish people and only for limited years. Use the search function of the web browser to locate names and places. If you don't find your ancestor, search for their brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles or cousins. Hope this helps your search. Regards, Sheila

    3. From the Archives of Ireland website: Future plans: All thirty-two counties for 1911 are now available on this site. 1901 Census material, with all data transcribed, will be launched before on 3 June 2010. The data for every county will be launched all at once rather than in tranches as with 1911. You can check out the announcement at: http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/about/futureplans.html 'before on' may mean 'on or before', my guess.
