    3. I WAS SURPRISED TOO! I THOUGHT THEY MIGHT SEND LIST OF HUSES HE WORKED OUT OF, ANY PROMOTIONS/MEDALS,ETC, BUT NOTHING ELSE BUT WHEN APPOINTED AND WHEN RETIRED, OH,YES HIS SALARY. I ALSO GOT A APPROX. AMOUNT OF HIS SALARY FROM ANCESTRY CENSUS OF 1940,WHICH KIND OF FIT, IT SAID $3000. FOR THE PREVIOUS YEAR,EQUALS OUT TO THE AMOUNT HE RECEIVED IN '44-'66,$125.00 PER MONTH. HE ALSO REC'D A NAVY PENSION FOR DISABILITY (HERNIA WHILE PREFORMING HIS DUTY ABOARD SHIP)…..I DOUBT SNYONE COULD LIVE HIGH ON HOG BACK IN THOSE DAYS, ANY BETTER THAN NOW……HOWEVER, BACK IN THE '40s MANY PEOPLE THOUGHT YOU MUST BE RICH TO RETIRE…LOL. NEVER MIND HE HAD TO GET A "REAL" JOB JUST TO SUPPORT FAMILY. HE DID TRY TO RE-ENLIST IN NAVY SFTER RETIRING FROM PD, BUT HIS HALTH RECORD TURN HIM DOWN, HE HAD HEART ATTACK JUST BEFORE RETIRING FROM PD + THE HERNIA….. BUT HE DID BECOME A HOUSE DETECTIVE FOR SOME BIG HOTELS BACK THEN, SO HE MUST HAVE LIKED POLICE-WORK. MY SONS, ON THE OTHER HAND ARE BOTH FIRE DEP'T LT'S. ONE HERE IN FL, ONE IN NJ, JUST RETIRED., I WAS FOR 10 YEARS,ON A VOL.FD. MUST BE IN THE BLOOD, ALL THE WAY BACK TO THE "1830's"……AT LEAST ONE PERSON IN EACH GENRERATION SINCE THEN, I HAVE FOUND,SO FAR. 4 On Apr 3, 2014, at 1:24 PM, Kathleen Scarlett O'Hara Naylor <[email protected]> wrote: > Hi Pat, > > I'm really surprised to hear that. 3. I have not, although I have some FDNY ancestors as well - I might have to give it a try. I just googled "NYFD Personnel Records" and got this site: http://www.nyc.gov/html/fdny/html/after_fire/fire_records.shtml#records. It says that employee records are only available with "an original employee signed notarized authorization," but maybe calling the phone number listed would provide some information on whether there are any exceptions for genealogical requests, or records older than a certain date, etc. Katie On Thu, Apr 3, 2014 at 1:37 PM, [email protected] <[email protected]>wrote: > Has anyone tried or been successful obtaining records from the NYFD? > I have an ancestor who was a fireman and I sent an email to the NYFD Museum > (?) that I found on a web site. 3. Hi Pat, I'm really surprised to hear that. My great-grandfather served in the NYPD at approximately the same time as your father (beginning in the 1920s; I can't look up at the moment just when he retired) and the police department was able to provide me with a substantial amount of information, including a photograph, records of his promotions and various transfers (even temporary) within the department, etc. They were definitely keeping records during that time period! When did you request the records? I understand that the NYPD has a database that is used to access these records for this kind of request - if your request was more than a few years ago, I wonder if trying again might yield better results? Maybe the database is a relatively recent innovation allowing them to fulfill family history requests. (My request was fulfilled in 2009.) 2. VLB
    3. The Brooklyn Eagle is now online free from 1841 thru 1955 at http://newsstand.bklynpubliclibrary.org/  I just went to their old site to search a name and the announcement popped up. It must have just happened as I was on the old site the other day.  I have just taken a quick look but there seems to be a better search function, at least for the post-1900 era--time will tell.  But this is fantastic news for all of us with Brooklyn roots. There are a number of new functions, including being able to save to your Ancestry tree, if you have a subscription.  Virginia

    1. [NY-IRISH] PERMISSION B4 reposting
    2. Thanks, Pat, for mentioning that you asked permission of the author prior to reposting them to this NY-Irish list. For those on lists: it is the polite and required protocol, and shows respect to the writer. No ONE has my authorization to copy and paste any of my posts to any other lists, journals, etc without seeking and receiving my specific permission. To "Deb," who cut and pasted my complete post about "Paper Trails": I never gave you permission to repost my original research and writing on Facebook. When I compose posts with links and history, I am donating my time and talents to my intended genealogy community/list. Some of my lengthy, documented posts take an hour or more to research, then compose. Please do not disrespect or disregard me or my work by (especially) reposting it on so called "social" media. When Walter Greenspan passed away, I consulted with his daughters and they authorized me to compose an online Obituary for my friend Walter. That took about 3 hours for me to research and compose. Again, I did not appreciate that a NY-Irish member forwarded it to Dick Eastman, who published it word for word in his newsletter, without the courtesy of citing me as the source. If you still do not understand, look up the word: plagiarize.* Barb @ BAM-4/2/2014 *http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/plagiarize ======================================================================= From: Pat Connors [email protected] "I have permission to re-post them to this list from the poster."

    2. Going back a few years, I went to a lecture given by Mr. Sillinonte in one of our Staten Island libraries, and found him to be a very self-effacing, quiet gentleman who patiently answered every question in detail. And he got his start by simply "walking the ground" and recording countless tombstones. His book, Bishop Loughlin's Dispensations, is a treasure trove. The diocesan archivist said Mr Silinonte had compiled volume 2 but died suddenly and no one knows what happened to it. A real shame for us and for him after all that work. While cleaning out old emails today, I found one where Mr Silinonte notes that when researching an Irish, handwritten surname beginning with Mc G*, the "G" looked like a "P", whereas I've suggested an "S." This may be just the clue someone needs.

    3. All good ideas. I will follow up, thank you! From: Kathleen Scarlett O'Hara Naylor [mailto:[email protected]] Hi Judi, If you don't have any luck with Brooklyn Historical, you can also try the Brooklyn Collection at the Brooklyn Public Library: http://www.bklynpubliclibrary.org/brooklyncollection. Also, have you searched the catalogs at the Brooklyn Historical Society, Brooklyn Public Library, New York Public Library, and New-York Historical Society? While they don't seem to have anything like employment records, there are a couple of titles that might interest you, including things like Brooklyn's Guardians: a record of the faithful and heroic men who preserve the peace in the city of homes by William E.S. Fales (1887) and the Annual Report of the Department of Police and Excise of the City of Brooklyn for years in the 1880s-1890s. I have no idea what, if anything, you might find to be of use in these, but you never know if something is going to list officers by name, or refer to other records that exist(ed), etc. to lead you in a promising direction.
