James BAXTER was born in Northern Ireland about 1800. He married Jane WIER, born 1803, also from Northern Ireland, about 1827 in Ireland. Their first two children, Sarah, born 1828 and James, born 1830 were born in Northern Ireland. Son David, born 1831, and other children were born in Lisbon, New York. This indicates they emmigrated between 1830 and 1831. The Baxters came to New York via Canada into Ogdensburg. They lived in Lisbon and James Sr. died in the Poor House in Lisbon in 1887. I have no record of Jane's death. Their daughter, Sarah, born 1828 in Northern Ireland, married William Fields, born 1829 in Lisbon. Sarah Baxter and William Fields had three children, James b 07 Nov 1845; Mary, b 08 Dec 1855; and John, b 10 Sept 1858 all born in Lisbon: The family later moved to St. Clair, McPherson, Blue Earth County, Minnesota. Information needed: 1. Death date of Jane Wier-Baxter 2. Marriage record of William Fields and Sarah Baxter 3. Actual birth date of James Fields, son of William and Sarah - information I have says he was b 07 Nov 1845 (birth year questionable) I have some genealogy info from the St. Lawrence Co. Historical Association Archives -* no citatations*. Other children of James and Jane for which I have no information are: John Baxter; Robert Baxter; Isabella Baxter; Samuel Baxter; and Thomas George Baxter. I also have information that son, David, served in the Civil War. To complicate matters, I think James may have had a *brother* who also came to Lisbon or thereabouts at about the same time, was married and had children. Thank you for any help you may be able to give me. Janet Magnuson
John Fields was born in Northern Ireland about 1800. He came to Lisbon, New York, before 1829. His wife, Mary (last name unknown) was also born in Northern Ireland about 1810-1815. It is not known if they married in Ireland or New York, but all of their 10 children were born in Lisbon. Their oldest son, William, born 1829, maried Sarah Baxter about 1843-45 and their three children were all born in Lisbon, New York: James, b 07 Nov 1845; Mary b 08 Dec 1855 and John b 10 Sep 1858. I know this looks like an early date for Jame to be born - William would have been only 16 years old - so Jame's birth date must be wrong - also, Mary was born in 1855 - 10 years later. I am certain of Mary's birth date. The William Fields family moved to St. Clair, McPherson, Blue Earth county, Minnesota sometime later where William farmed. Information needed: 1. Where in Northern Ireland did John come from? 2. What is Mary's last name? 3. Where did Mary come from? 4. Where and when did John and Mary get married? 5. Where and when did William and Sarah Baxter marry? 6. What is John Fields (son of William and Sarah) actual birth date. Thank you all so much for your help. Janet Magnuson
Couple of questions? Where did you get the year, 1863, in one of the censuses? If not found till 1900, then possible this is a wrong year. Might have emigrated between 1880 and 1900. Vicki, I am intrigued with your ancestor BARDEN, b. Co. Tipperary 1818. My great grandmother Ann HOGAN's mother's name was on her death certificate as Dora Parden, but I've had no luck at all researching that name. Years ago the Co. Tipperary Heritage Society told me that my HOGAN ancestor was most likely from near the Offaly border. There were two towns, Dorrha and Lorrha. I believe only Lorrha exists today. Passing this on in case it rings any bells. Marian Fagan McCabe On Fri, Jun 27, 2014 at 12:02 PM, Vicki Vaughn <[email protected]> wrote: > Thomas VAUGHAN, b. Mary Jane Marshall was born in Co. Monaghan approximately 1843. She emigrated to New York approximately 1855 and came through Castle Garden (Castle Clinton). Mary Jane was Protestant; the love of her life was a Catholic, Peter Daly (Daily, Dailey). They could not get married in Ireland so Peter came to New York - also through Castle Garden - approximately 1853. Peter was also born in Co. Monaghan. about 1836. They settled in Goshen, Orange County, New York and had nine children. Peter and Mary Jane are my great grandparents, the parents of my grandmother Margaret Daly Nolan. Marian Fagan McCabe
Ann Hogan, born Co. Tipperary 1834. Emigrated to New York area approximately 1847-48. Family story says she was 13 when she emigrated, and traveled with a 4 year old cousin, Dan Flanigan. Ann married James Nolan, who was born in Ireland but I don't know where, in Wurtsboro NY in 1850. I would like to know where Ann is from in Ireland - and James as well, if possible. They lived many years in Goshen, Orange County, New York and had nine children, one of whom is my grandfather Edward L. Nolan. Marian Fagan McCabe
Patrick, born Co. Cork, near Charleville, approx. 1843. Emigrated to New York City approx. 1855, with wife Johanna Finn. Lived in Brooklyn, 102 Steuben Street. Thanks to my cousins I have some good information on Patrick, who is my great-grandfather. Marian Fagan McCabe
Matthew, born County Meath approx. 1830 Arrived New York City 1849 Married 1) Ann Cleary (1831-1869) 2) Mary Lynch (1834-1909) He lived in Manhattan and moved to Brooklyn in the 1860s. I would like to know where he lived in Manhattan, as that would be where my grandfather Charles S. Fagan was born. I would also like to know where Ann Cleary was from - presumably Ireland. My Fox family is from County Armagh and at times used 'Todd' as their surname. Through more research, I found that todd was the Scottish name for 'fox'. Usage of Todd may only be found in Northern Ireland which had the greatest number of Scottish emigrants. Since he named his first son, Daniel, it might mean his father was Daniel (using Irish naming patterns at the time). From that, you might want to search the Griffith's Valuation and the Tithes Applotments for a Daniel. Here is the GV Index: http://www.failteromhat.com/griffiths.htm The tithes are on two places: http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/home.jsp The above is the Archives of Ireland website. They have a search engine but their transcriptions have been faulty, so beware. You can look at the pages there to check. The Family Search website has all the tithes but only images that you can look at one by one. If you have the strong feeling that Donegal is your county, you might just want to go through each civil parish page by page: https://familysearch.org/ Patrick GILLESPIE (1828 -1893) > County uncertain. Hello All, My last post reminded me of this recent discovery. I had been told by a veteran researcher that a disappearing Irishman might adopt as his new surname his mother's or grandmother's maiden name. In one of my Brooklyn Irish families, the fourth of six sons disappeared sometime between the 1920 and 1930 censuses. Recently, a cousin heard from the daughter of that disappearing son, who had in fact adopted new names: as his forename, the forename of one older brother (third son); as his middle name, the forename of another older brother (second son); and as his surname, his mother's maiden name.
