4th July 2014 "Enhanced" Indexes to Ireland's Civil Registration Records Now Online At an event on the 3rd July attended by representatives of CIGO, the Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, Jimmy Deenihan TD, launched a database index to Ireland's civil registration records. The database covers all civil records from 1845 (when registration first began) right up to 2013 - encompassing all non-Catholic marriages from April 1845 and all births, deaths and marriages from January 1864. Achieving this was one of CIGO's primary aims at the time it was founded in 1992 and yesterday's announcement by Mr Deenihan vindicates CIGO's long years of lobbying the Department of Health (which originally had oversight of the General Register Office) and the Department of Social Welfare (which assumed responsibility at the time of the passing of the Civil Registration Act 2004). The index entries in the database are "enhanced" because they note more information that those currently available in the GRO's Public Search Room or those that were microfilmed by the Church of Latter Day Saints in 1959 (and which are now available through FamilySearch.org, Ancestry.com and Findmypast.ie). A good explanation of what information is provided can be found here at Irish Genealogy News. continue> http://www.cigo.ie/news.html

Well, it is a new day and now when I just hit reply to Barb's post, it went directly to her and not to the list. So, I had to add the list so this would post. Well, I guess that is better but I have set the list so all replies go to the list. I guess no one remembers the adage, > "If it ain't broken don't fix it." > Just another hassle, especially for non daily posters. > > What is happening is that Rootsweb is trying to stop all the junk mail (spam) going to the various lists. You don't see most of it, but we list admins find it every morning and we have to review it and either send it to the list or mark is as spam so the email address is then in the Rootsweb computer and the computer will stop all future emails from post to the lists with that address. Trouble is the spammers are always finding work arounds and trying to trick the filters. Bottom line, we need to adjust to the Rootsweb filters/changes and then figure our work arounds. If you hit, 'reply' notice where your reply is going, if it just has a Rootsweb address, and you also want it to go to the poster , then add the posters email address. -- Pat Connors, Sacramento CA, list admin http://www.connorsgenealogy.com

What this means for you is you cannot tell who sent a message if he/she doesn't sign their message with their name. Additionally, you now CANNOT reply to anything but the list unless you can add a "cc", and put another recipient in the "to" field and the address you want to reply to. I was surprised to see the Roman Catholic Orphan Asylum listed on 52nd St in a 1927 book, Barb. They had moved way uptown about 1902. This large and important institution with an amazing history was built next to St Patrick's Cathedral when the streets in that area were unpaved and the land was cheap and the neighborhood remote. That changed of course and in the 1890s a new location way uptown was sought. The name changed too as 'asylum' had other connotations. It was run by the Sisters of Charity and they did an amazing job educating and providing job training for many thousands of boys and girls in separate buildings. There is a lot online about the Roman Catholic Orphan Asylum. A brief overlook is at http://www.nycago.org/Organs/Brx/html/RCOrphanAsylum.html The site http://www.nycago.org/ is about organs (musical) but has excellent info about many churches in New York, often with very good photos both interior and exterior. Worth checking out. I hope this goes thru as I'm having trouble with rootsweb unsubscribing me and not sending mail. Virginia
The Capacity numbers are astounding for these NYC Orphanages! Thank you for posting this. It gives yet another dimension to the cultural milieu in which the Irish and other immigrants were thrown. The orphanages were undoubtedly a tough situation for all involved. Maybe we could use selfless Irish nuns down on our current southern borders. MM

Hello Kelly: I checked The Saint Paul's Baptism and marriage records between 1839 and 1857 and could not find Charles Fagan, Matthew Fagan or his wife Catherine. Also checked Fagan in Tombstones of the Irish Born - Cemetery of the Holy Cross, Flatbush, Brooklyn which was established in 1849 according to Stiles the Brooklyn Historian. In the Tombstone book I found at page 32: FAGAN Catherine B. 4/31/1891, 68, Castlematyr, Cork Her sister Abagail Barry, 3/26/1897, 72 I don't know if this helps you, but this is how I found a sister of my GGF Matthew Corrigan that I didn't know about. Daniel, this isn't anything that will take you further in your search, but the entire family is listed in the 1880 NY Census, with the exception of the motherIL. They also have a servant named Mary Barker living with them. I don't know why the Index only shows Andrew & Sarah. That's definitely a mistake. I can send you the image off-List if you'd like it. Terry -----Original Message----- <<<<In the 1870 Census Andrew Barr is now living in the Mount Vernon Postal District of Eastchester, Westchester County, New York. His occupation is listed as Dry Goods. He resides there with his wife Sarah (Young) Barr and 4 daughters Annie age 12, Sarah age10, Minnie and Lillie are both age 4. Mother in Law Margaret (Fair) Young is age 80 and living with the family. By the 1880 Census Andrew and Sarah (Young) Barr are the only persons listed in this census the children are not listed neither is the mother in law>>>>>.
