The Calhoun Monitor published in Pittsboro, MS July 21 1904 Page 3, Column 4 ONE-LEGGED BALL PLAYER ------- Besides Holding a Record as a Pitcher He Has a Fine Reputation for Batting ------- New York Special Robert C. Nolan, of the Bronx, is one of the best semi-professional pitchers in the younger ranks. In addition to that he has a reputation for batting and playing that would do credit to many professionals. Last Sunday, at Wast Farms, Nolan was in the box for his team, the Young Men’s Catholic club, and for 12 innings pitched such good ball that not a man of the opposing Belmonts crossed the plate, while 13 batters who faced him fanned the air. Nolan, who is known far and wide as “the one-legged pitcher,” is the son of Policeman John J. Nolan, who lives at 1279 Tremont Avenue, where Robert was born about 21 years ago. When a young lad his left leg was cut off by a car on the old “Huckleberry” line and since then he has been using a crutch. He attended the public schools of his neighborhood and later went to Manhattan college, from which he graduated in 1902. When Nolan is in action on the diamond he uses a wooden crutch while delivering a ball, the crutch merely assisting to steady him and aid him to keep his balance. His left leg has been amputated above the knee. In delivering the ball he swings back on the remaining leg and is enable to get as much speed as if he possessed two good “kickers.”

Blay. The captain says that on Wednesday afternoon he caught the six men named engaged in a game of cards in one of the sleeping rooms. There were chips on the table in front of players, it is alleged, but there is not charge that they were playing poker. I rescued the 19th Edition of "New York's Laminated Capital District Atlas." It includes Albany, Rensselaer, Saratoga & Schenectady counties. Oversized & spiral bound 150 detailed maps w/ 25 page index that cites cities, streets and points of interest. Great reference tool.

This happened to my mother's aunt. She married a German alien in the US and lost her citizenship. I did not know this until I found naturalization papers for her. I was very confused, I thought 'why did she need to be naturalized?' Then I found out about the law on women marrying non-citizens. And, of further interest to all of us, tho the daughter of one of the richest families in the world, she had no birth certificate. Born in NYC in 1877. Actually, Barb, women could and did become citizens on their own from an early time, altho it was not the usual practice. If you go to Ancestry's database, 'New York Naturalization Petitions, 1794-1906' and enter any common Irish female name, such as Mary Murphy or Mary Kelly, you will see a number of women who went thru the naturalization process on their own account. Some do say 'Mary, wife of -----', but it is the woman who is the applicant.  None I have seen bother crossing out 'his, him, he' on the pre-printed forms. And one clerk got desperate when he had to fill in 'occupation' so he wrote 'lady'. Or maybe that's what Mary informed him she was, no doubt with a cold eye when he asked! It was once was that females and children only gained US citizenship through a father or husband. How well we long time list members remember "searching for the man," even in census records. (Women were not indexed then in Ancestry.) It wasn't until Aug 1920, when women gained the right to vote, that they could apply for citizenship in their name. Citizenship was also a reason for immigrant women to marry.
