Yup Native born USers [South Americans call themselves "Americans" in reference to that location] once again get the shaft. I'm now calling it a terrorist friendly site> webcams scan the peripheral skies, tons of coloring book photos for illiterate illegals, and more photos & what my Irish mom called gimmicks, loaded to the brim with gimmicks. Oh, and a shop to buy Liberty Christmas tree ornaments stamped "Made in Taiwan" much like the schtuff schlocked at the City Store near Muni Archives. Buy your taxicab mug "Made in China." 'Twld be really nice if OUR historical, national monument was so claimed, as the Great Wall is to China, and the Eiffel Tower belong to France, and Big Ben belongs to the English, and the mud sod soil plenished by briny sweat of suffocated RCs belongs to the souls of them. It all goes to the highest bidder. -----Original Message----- From: Joyce Presnall [email protected] Agreed Barb, all they had to do was fix the fact that you could copy the manifests which was the main reason they changed the site...they were angry that people were "stealing" information that way...JMHO this should be public access data to start with Joyce On Sat, Sep 6, 2014 at 11:54 AM, mizscarlettny via <[email protected]> wrote: Let's collect email contacts for the Ellis Island Board of Directors. I have drafted a letter to the Ellis Island board of directors. When our genealogical community is so upset with all the changes it is important we let them know. The more people who write the greater the impact. Please email me off list at my regular address ([email protected]) and simply put Ellis Island in the Subject line. I will email you a copy. Many people have trouble writing letters but wil send one if someone provides a sample and makes it a bit easier. It is good if you personalize the letter a bit, but you don't have to. The important thing is we let them know how unhappy we are with the new site. BOD's look at numbers! Also if you have a Facebook account, plenty of people are logging in their complaints as well, but I don't think that is as effective as writing to the BOD. The BOD is wo makes all these decisions, not the publicity person on Facebook. If you are as upset about these changes as i am , email me and let's show them how many of us are not happy. If you have not visited the new website you really have to to see just how messed up the new site is...It is next to impossible to find anyone now...Test it by looking for people you know are there, and also look for a name or two that you don't know if they are there...see how difficult they have made it just to read the darn manifests! If we are to get them to fix this mess they have created we need to speak up folks...they need to hear from many of us! One of the other things you can't do anymore is page through the manifest to see if there are any other family members traveling with your ancestor, or to see how many died on the way over. Again, the persons who designed this thing were never users. They don't know how a genealogy researcher thinks. It was not meant to be helpful. It was meant to restrict access and thereby generate revenue. What a surprise they will get. Think of all the other sites that have gone from free to paid, the prices are not comparable to this gouging. Scotland's People which I use a lot asks for 5 euros for documents and you can browse around the indexes and get smart enough to chose the right document. This site makes that impossible. BTW if you have to use the site, the only way is to go through Steve Morse. At least there you can enter a full name and get your person without all the down filtering. And Tommy Lasorda is one of the Directors. Wow! Sheila Santa Barbara CA

I haven't been on the site in a while so I just tried to log on. It seems my account is GONE! Had to create a new one. Nope, don't like the new site! Ally -------Original Message------- From: Sheila MacAvoy Block via Date: 9/6/2014 1:40:18 PM To: [email protected] Subject: [NY-IRISH] Ellis Island web site Changes to the Ellis Island web site do a few things that render it useless for this researcher. 1) All of the information stored in my old account is gone. 2) when you start a search, the first name box will only let you put in a first letter. You get a raft of data, quit readable I will admit. You must then screen by sex, marital status etc. Then you are given a list of possibilities, including people who use the initial you have entered as either the first letter of the middle name or the middle initial. The redesign uses the same philosophy that pertains to all of these new platforms. You have to go through lots of filters to find your person. It will never give you the exact matches. It presumes a kind of engineering thinking that I don't process well. 3) When you find your manifest, you can read it, but you can't screen print it or snip it. As soon as you take the cursor off the magnified image to go to a snipping tool, the image goes to a full screen and is unreadable. When I tried to print the image, my printer got bound up. I presume because the image was so large. In other words, the new site is clearer to read, fancy, somewhat clutzy, but is now not really free. If I understand correctly, the new site will charge $49 for a copy of the image. Bottom line, Ellis Island is available to view, but they have figured out a way to make it a pay site, for all intents and purposes. And not cheap. The redesign is typical of what has happened to all these sites over time, Family History, Ancestry, etc. The redesign is assigned to computer engineers, not genealogists. I have drafted a letter to send to the Board of Directors. If anyone wants a copy just email me OFFLIST at my regular email address which is [email protected] and I will send you a copy. Because it is quite long I do not want to post it here. That way you can just copy and paste into a letter and put your own return address on the letter. I know from previous experience that if people are given a letter to send, they are more likely to send it. PLEASE use Ellis Island Letter in the subject of your email so i do not accidentally delete it. I hope if we all join together to show them their folly they will do something to make the site more usable again. In my opinion they threw their money away on this "new and improved" site which is not improved at all. Hi Elizabeth, Suggest that you complete your search of Bernard O and family as you will get more certainties as you proceed. Then go to the 1840 US CENSUS and see if you find him [only heads listed] there. The least that will happen is you'll eliminate that time for his NYC arrival. This surname spelling will cause you difficulties. Famine era folks aimed to escape Ireland and survive the trip. I use AOL and the only problem I have ever had is just recently I was thrown off two lists and had to re-subscribe. I was thrown off the Irish NY list twice, but now everything is back to normal. I think other Internet providers had the same problem; maybe this is your problem with Gmail. I know AOL is considered an "obsolete" provider by many, but it serves my needs. Henny
Hi, everyone! I have Oats/Oatis/Oates/Otis in Queens in the 1850's upward.....now in the 1850 census, Bernard Oatis, his wife, Margaret, and son Bernard are listed....but there is a Mary A. Evans (something like 8) listed as a niece born in New Brunswick.....I'm guessing Canada. I have yet to find the Oatis folks coming into the US so I don't know where they are from in Ireland. I have not done any Canadian research. I don't know if this lassie just came and stayed with them in 1850....she doesn't appear any place else with them....or if they may have picked her up on the way to Queens via Canada. Would anyone have any thoughts on where I should go from here? Thanks so much! Elizabeth Fairport, NY
