Schoonmaker Sr., of Newburgh, entered into rest on Wednesday, May 28, 2003 at the Orange County Residential Healthcare Facility in Goshen. He was 71. Son of the late Myron H. and Anna B. Molofslcy Schoonmaker, George was born on May 13, 1932 in Walden. Mr. Schoonmaker wed his loving bride Juanita Ruth Baylous Schoonmaker on January 25, 1953 at the Malton Memorial Baptist Church in Newburgh. George proudly represented our country in the United States Army during the Korean War. He received many awards and commendations such as the Korean Service Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, the United Nations Service Medal and the National Defense Medal. Mr. Schoonmaker was also a former member of the Goodwill Fire Department and was a leader in the Boyscouts for Troop #227. Besides his loving wife of 50 years, Juanita, George is survived by three sons, George Jr. of Newburgh, William Sr. and his wife, Sarah, of Washingtonville and David Sr. and his wife, Lillian, of Plattekill; two daughters, Wendy Schoonmaker and Sandra Schoonmaker both of Newburgh; two brothers, Granville Schoonmaker of Plattekill and John Schoonmaker of Tennessee; one sister, Philomena Cassolino of Newburgh; four grandchildren, David Jr., James, William Jr. and Kelly; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. George was predeceased by two brothers, Fred Schoonmaker and Corporal Myron H. Schoonmaker Jr. who died serving our country as a member of the US Army in the Korean War; and one sister, Mary Kargo. George's family will receive friends on Saturday, May 31 from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Brooks-DiDonato Funeral Home, 481 Gidney Ave., Newburgh 12550. There will be a service with military honors following visitation at 8 p.m. with Father John Vondras officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to the Diabetes Foundation or Stroke Foundation, c/o the funeral home.
