City Directories are on film and I'm sure LDS Centers have and you can borrow.Often history libraries have them as well. Our History Library in San Francisco has City Directories for many many cities in the USA--I've used them a lot--dozens of reels. NYC Directories go back to 1815 or so. They usually have 2 years in a Directory. They are alphabetized so if you are looking for surname beginning with a "C" all you need to do is select the film for the years you want to begin, go quickly to the C's and read all that are there. When you find your name write down all of that surname and the addresses with that surname--they may be relatives. Then go ahead to the the films of the next year--keep going until you find your name, follow them until you see that they are no longer there. No need to read a lot of film, just the the name area you are concerned with. That will give you the time frame that family lived in that community. Neighbors, perhaps relatives, often occ! upation. It will also help in finding them in a census. City Directories also have churches listed, businesses etc. and maps of the area at that time in history. The birth info I have just lists her being born in NY. It comes from census records.
