    3. I feel awful asking this, but if all CA deaths are recorded there, I may I "horn in" with a favor? I need to find a missing death date for Eliza (Libby) Silkworth Hunt. She was born in Richmond County, NY in 1845, married in Brooklyn, June 1866 and died in June 1896 in Pasadena, according to a penciled -in death record in the Family bible. I have not been able to find the Hunts but briefly in CA, tho I see George on the Voter Registration and also see an Eliza Hunt as a dressmaker in Pasadena City Directory in 1895. then I don't see either of them. It's not urgent, and I feel leechy asking you, but maybe you can put it on a to-do list for some other time? Thanks so much. Jan Miller, San Mateo--a displaced New Yorker. 3. Hi Pat, Are you sure that the Sacramento Library still has these things available? If you are planning to use these records, I suggest you ask before you go all the way to California. Last winter I signed on to the California Death Index mailing list. What I found was a mad rush to get all of the death information possible before those records closed to the public as of June. It was frantic. Volunteers were making mad dashes to vital records offices to transcribe as many records as possible for people before the deadline. Most access seemed to stop as of Jan. 1 as counties chose to cut off access early, apparently to save money or staff time. As I understand this law, birth and marriage records were also affected. Further, all reference to maiden names are to be deleted from these public records. To get access to any of these you must supply paperwork that you are a relative within certain degrees. The degree of relationship allowed access is very restrictive. Plus, I think you have to show why you want access, although I might be wrong about that particular piece. This new law put a real kibosh on genealogical research in California. As I understand it, one of California's legislators discovered that maiden names and social security numbers were available on line and she was aghast. She promoted this law as a deterrent to identity theft. The irony is that she uses her maiden name in her public life and uses her own children's names in her campaign literature, so this list said. California genealogists have been trying to develop substitute methods for doing such research. Obituaries, for instance, can be used. If posted on line any maiden name must be deleted. There are on line sites, last I knew, still publishing the California death index. The law doesn't apply to what's done outside the state. However, I understand that rootsweb took the California information off their site as a result of this legislation. Efforts were under way when I signed on there to keep this law from going into effect. Those efforts were not successful. When I last was on that list, efforts were underway to modify the law. I don't know what's going on with it now. A separate site had to be set up to deal with the subject because so many people posted outraged messages to the death index list that it interfered with the list's primary function. About the time I signed off the CA list, I signed on to a Florida list, only to encounter a similar thing happening there. I sent for a Florida death certificate then. What I got had all nformation possibly useful for genealogy blocked out. I understood this kind of action was on the agenda for some other states as well.
