Hi, Joy, I still haven't gotten over to the Newburgh Library but I did get to the Moffat this week and I looked in Ruttenber & Clark's 1881 History of Orange County, New York. In the Town of Hamptonburgh history the following churches are listed First Presbyterian Church of Hamptonburgh -- est. 1765 or 67, Route 207 Campbell Hall, NY 10916, (845) 427-2864 Started out as Associate Church of Neelytown then was the Associate Reformed Church of Hamptonburgh. St. David's Episcopal --est. 1832 No current listing. St. Anne's in Washingtonville, St. James in Goshen and St. Andrew's in Walden are the surrounding churches Methodist Episcopal of Otterville--est 1857 No obvious successor. Goshen Maybrook and Walden are closest modern churches I have notes on churches in some of the surrounding towns as well so if none of these pan out we can look at those. Margaret
Hi Margaret. Thanks so much for this. I don't know which church is most likely, but there are some intriguing clues here. When my husband's ggrandfather moved away from downtown Newburgh in the early 1900s, he joined the Meadow Hill Church, which was the successor to the Assoc. Ref. Church of Newburgh (which I've learned was an offshoot of the Presbyterian Church, not Dutch Reformed as I'd assumed). He'd been brought up in Canada by a Scottish uncle, who was Presbyterian. While living in Newburgh, though, the family was affiliated with St. George's Episcopal. All of that is later than the period in question. He hadn't even been born yet. It's his older brother that I'm hoping will turn up in a church record in or near Campball Hall: John A. Weaver, born Nov., 1859, so likely baptised late 1859 or early 1860. (And of course, the parents' marriage would be a real kick!) I've had some incredible luck with this family just recently. I've found the baptism of Joseph Henry WEAVER, the ggrandfather above, in Anglican records in Quebec, along with names of witnesses/ sponsors from his mother, Mary BROWN's family. I still don't know if he was born in Orange Co. and baptised in Quebec, though, because there was a four-month gap between the two. What I'm trying to determine is whether the John A. WEAVER, who was 8 months old when the 1860 census was done in Hamptonburg is the same as Joseph's older brother, who'd be exactly that age. He's with a Mary WEAVER, but her age is 40 and she's b. in NY. Our Mary would have been between 22 and 32 and was b. in Ireland. Do you have any idea where the records of the first two of these churches might be found? I feel, finally, like these people are trying to let me find them! One thing about all this is that it feels so strange to be looking at places I lived near 40 years ago. Did I ever tell you that I taught in Washingtonville and Valley Central schools and lived in Salisbury Mills and Montgomery? I don't know how many times I drove past Campbell Hall!
