Marita- A family History Center - there are 758 microfilm reels of land transactions for Rensselaer County in the LDS files. Early land transactions may show in Albany county, in Rensselaerwyck Manor records, possibly in Vermont records. You should also be aware that many of the early settlers were tenants rather than owners of land. Many of the early settlers migrated into central and western New York in the 1830's on. If your ancestor inherited the property, probate records may show the acquisition. A deed for the property may have not been recorded until it was sold, if owned, to a nonfamily member. It may have been bounty land for military service. ----- Original Message ----- From: riti Sent: Friday, April 18, 2003 4:19 PM To: NY-HUDSONRV-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [HudsonRV] Re: NY-HUDSONRV-D Digest V03 #48 Where would one find the early land transactions 1800-1810 of the Renssealer Land, in Berne Township? Margaret, may I impose another look-up task on you? When you get a chance at the Newburgh library, could you check some Street Directories? City of Newburgh: Beginning 1875 and going back in time till he disappears: Joseph GRAF/F or GROF/F Beginning 1855 and going forward in time till 1865: John and Jacob WEAVER (Ignore John R(obinson) Weaver. That's not the one). From 1860 to whenever Joseph Graff shows up: Mary WEAVER. What should show up, but may not, is John or Jacob WEAVER from 1855 to 1860-64, then Mary WEAVER till 1868 when she married Joseph GRAFF. But the first I have on them is the 1875 census. The rest is from a family Bible and I'm not sure they were in Newburgh before that census. Hope that makes sense. And I hope this is not too much to ask. Any of it would be a help. Joy Weaver

After ten years of work/research, I narrowed my great grandfather's death date down to between 1925-1930 through searching the all censuses of Troy NY from 1905 to 1930. A friend who lives near Albany looked at the fiche in the Archives building (Heath Dept) and found the below: James P. O'Conner, dod Jan 16, 1926, Albany James Connors, November 3, 1928, Troy (mine) James J. O'Connor, May 1, 1928, Watervliet James Connors, January 2, 1929, Troy James H. Conners, February 12, 1929, Watervliet James O'Conner, December 17, 1929, Albany James P. O'Conner, February 17, 1929, Troy James Connors, January 23, 1930, Troy James Connors, November 13, 1930, Watervliet James O'Connor, March 25, 1930, Schenectady It is amazing so many with basically the same name, living in the same area, died within 5 years of each other. Maybe, this info will help someone else besides me. Today I sent away my great grandfather's death certificate which will hopefully give me his parents' names. If so, I will have proof to either validate or negate my assumptions. If not, since I also was sent his obit from the Troy Record, I found a sister living in Albany at the time of his death that I didn't know about. So, I will look for her marriage and death date and send for her records if I need to...and the hunt goes on. Another interesting twist, I found one of my grandfather's brother still alive. Family lore had him dead before 1920. So, need to rethink that one. -- Pat Connors, Sacramento CA http://www.connorsgenealogy.com All outgoing mail virus free, scanned by Norton 2002

I, too, wonder, though. I have paid subscriptions to both genealogy.com and ancestry.com. Seems like they may need to do something about duplication of services and pro-rating subscription fees. None of this relates directly to your question but it might help narrow things down a bit. These are all the mentions of cemeteries listed in the index of the book GOTHAM: History of New York city to 1898. 1797 "Potter's Field opened just north of today's Washington Square" (p 358) Before 1830 "New York had banned burials north of Canal Street" (p 582-83) 1830 New York Marble Cemetery opened (p 582-83) 1832 Henry E. Pierrepont proposed a city of the dead on the heights of Gowanus (p 582-83) between 1842 & 1846 Walt Whitman reported watching a group of women trying to block workman from digging up the Baptist Cemetery at the corner of Crystie and Delancy (p 706) 1848 Calvary Cemetery established by John Hughes (p 751) 1870s "Workmen digging a cellar for a building at Lexington and 107th St. uncovered a graveyard for British Soldiers" (p 930) Margaret > Subject: [HudsonRV] Burials in Old New York City > I have a Revolutionary War pensioner who died in New City June 2, > 1835. I have a Revolutionary War pensioner who died in New City June 2, 1835. The family lived on West St. NYC was young, small and down on the lover end of Manhattan. Cemeteries were probably north and moved as growth pushed north. What happened to these cemeteries? Where are the records about this information? Widow was still alive at this time, filed widow's pension in Marine Court NYC. She may be affected by this as well. One ancestor died 1839 we know about because he was reinterred (from somewhere) to Cypress Hills Brooklyn in 1853. There must have been removals, and opportunities for families to intercede and claim loved ones. Where can I find information and details in this regard? Jan in California.
