    1. [HudsonRV] Town of Stuyvesant and Village of Valatie, Columbia Co., NY
    2. Pat Connors
    3. Cliff posted this on the NY-Rensselaer list today and with his permission, I am passing this on.... Mindy Potts has been writing a series of historical articles about Columbia Co. for a monthly Columbia Co. newspaper called "OK Times & the Hudson River Sampler". She has kindly given me permission to post them on my website. Three articles are ready for viewing. They are about the Town of Stuyvesant, the village of Valatie, and a fascinating account of brickmaking in the county. The published titles of the articles were: Stuyvesant: A Simple Town With a Grand History Vaaltje (Little Falls) Has Quite a History Columbia County Brickmaking Combined Skill and Hard Work Vaaltje was the Dutch spelling for Valatie which has two waterfalls. This water power made Valatie an important mill town, the first mill being constructed there in the 1600s. Another 14 articles will also be put online in the near future. Mindy continues to write and have her work published, so we can look forward to reading more Columbia Co. history in the future. As part of her research for some of the articles, she interviews local people. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~clifflamere/History/StuyvesantColCo.htm http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~clifflamere/History/ValatieColCo.htm http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~clifflamere/History/BrickmakingColCo.htm As with most new webpages that I post, I am sending this email to the mailing lists for Albany, Columbia and Rensselaer Counties. There were close associations between the people in these counties, some of our ancestors moving from one to the other. Most future articles by Mindy will only be announced to the Columbia Co. mailing list. Other interested list members should check my home page under the topic History/Columbia Co. All articles should be online in the next few weeks. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~clifflamere/ Cliff -- Pat Connors, Sacramento CA http://www.connorsgenealogy.com Professional Genealogy Research All outgoing mail virus free, scanned by Norton 2002

    1. [HudsonRV] Garrisons of Haverstraw
    2. Hello Gina, Sorry it took a while (I find if I don't write right away, things get lost). Anyway: 28 Dec 1850 Garret G Garrison married Eliza Smith (daughter of John Edward Smith & Hannah Onderdonk, b abt ) in the New Hempstead Presb. Church in Rockland County. Her sister, Caroline, married a Samuel Garrison. Garret had been named as guardian to Eliza when their grandfather Adrian Onderdon's will was probated. Both girls were born late 1820/early 1830. I have no further information (too many details, not enough time). Before I could sent this off I found your follow up messege. The Adrian Onderdonk above was married to Rebecca Blauvelt, daughter of Abraham. Quite likely the same Abraham as in you land record. I haven't fleshed out the rest of the family yet, I'm sure they're in the Blauvelt or Onderdonk Genealogies (but you have to be careful for errors). Please let me know if you can connect these fellow to anyone,or each other. Krys I have a Jacob &Nancy(1800-1818) living in Haverstraw, Orange/Rockland. Sons Malachi(1836) &Weyant(1842). I would love to exchange info w/ you on your Samuel &Garret, as I have no clue to Jacob's brothers. You may contact me either on or off list. My Garrisons seem to be very close to the Smiths in census records as well. Gina

    3. The 1870 Index is available through Geneology.com. You can see if you get a name match with their free lookup, but you won't be able to find the page reference without a subscription. Now that MyFamily.com (owners of Ancestry.com and Rootsweb) has purchased Geneology.com I am curious as to how much will be included in the annual Census subscription and of course how much more it will cost. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Patricia Corney" <bluroc@worldnet.att.net> To: <NY-HUDSONRV-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, May 19, 2003 3:04 PM Subject: Re: [HudsonRV] Magdelena Casazza b Oct 1875 in NY > You can join the NY-CENSUS-LOOKUP-L or D-request@rootsweb > > The Italian section would have been "Little Italy" believe lower east side of Manhattan. > > Hope this helps. > > Patricia Corney, BHCD > Quakertown, PA USA > bluroc@worldnet.att.net > > Email scanned in and out by Norton 2003 > ----- Original Message ----- > From: Stephanie Lehman > To: NY-HUDSONRV-L@rootsweb.com > Sent: Sunday, May 18, 2003 5:05 PM > Subject: Re: [HudsonRV] Magdelena Casazza b Oct 1875 in NY > > > Thanks Pat, > I have been waiting exactly 10 weeks for Maggie's death cert from > Alameda Co. 3. City Directories are on film and I'm sure LDS Centers have and you can borrow.Often history libraries have them as well. Our History Library in San Francisco has City Directories for many many cities in the USA--I've used them a lot--dozens of reels. NYC Directories go back to 1815 or so. They usually have 2 years in a Directory. They are alphabetized so if you are looking for surname beginning with a "C" all you need to do is select the film for the years you want to begin, go quickly to the C's and read all that are there. When you find your name write down all of that surname and the addresses with that surname--they may be relatives. Then go ahead to the the films of the next year--keep going until you find your name, follow them until you see that they are no longer there. No need to read a lot of film, just the the name area you are concerned with. That will give you the time frame that family lived in that community. Neighbors, perhaps relatives, often occ! upation. It will also help in finding them in a census. City Directories also have churches listed, businesses etc. and maps of the area at that time in history. 1. [HudsonRV] Troy 1900 census update
    2. Pat Connors
    3. I am starting to get the 11th ward of the 1900 census on line. This ward includes 3,912 individuals, 427 dwellings and 857 families. To date we have five wards on line, including this one, with over 20,000 individuals. The transcribers have completed another six wards but I have been slow at proofreading them and getting them formatted to go on line. For this ward, thank the following people for giving up their time to transcribe this ward: Bob McConihe, Walt Warren, Herb Phelps, Christine Dunham, Mary Nigro, Ron Mauer, Kay Brearton, Colleen Wheeler, Gwen Beiermeister, Art Boyne, Eileen Guinee and Pam Warren. As usual, a word of warning. This was another horrible ward! I thing most are in the 1900 census for Troy. Not only was the handwriting bad, the enumerators couldn't spell the easiest surnames and occupations. We have transcribed them as spelled so look for all the variations of your handwriting. If you think you found your family, always check the original census before using as a source document in your research. Also, if you find you family and the name(s) are spelled incorrectly, I will not be able to change the on line census for various reasons. You can access the census at the Rensselaer County website: http://www.rootsweb.com/~nyrenss2/ Under Cities, click on Troy, you will find a links under, Censuses. You can also access the census from my website, under New York State, go to Troy. -- Pat Connors, Sacramento CA http://www.connorsgenealogy.com Professional Genealogy Research All outgoing mail virus free, scanned by Norton 2002

You can check all about it here: http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.hllw.fizzer@mm.html Remember: Subscribe to virus program, McAfee, Norton, etc. There are also free ones on the internet. Keep your virus definitions current. I use Norton because it is the only one that I have found that scans incoming and outgoing Netscape mail. If you use Outlook, most programs work, but remember to configure the software to scan your mail. While our lists pertain to genealogy, I tried to alert all the subscribers of new viruses as they occur. If you come across a new virus, remember to check with me first before posting an alert to the list. Thanks for your cooperation. -- Pat Connors, Sacramento CA http://www.connorsgenealogy.com Professional Genealogy Research All outgoing mail virus free, scanned by Norton 2002
