    3. Hi Margaret. Thanks so much for this. I don't know which church is most likely, but there are some intriguing clues here. When my husband's ggrandfather moved away from downtown Newburgh in the early 1900s, he joined the Meadow Hill Church, which was the successor to the Assoc. Ref. Church of Newburgh (which I've learned was an offshoot of the Presbyterian Church, not Dutch Reformed as I'd assumed). He'd been brought up in Canada by a Scottish uncle, who was Presbyterian. While living in Newburgh, though, the family was affiliated with St. George's Episcopal. All of that is later than the period in question. He hadn't even been born yet. It's his older brother that I'm hoping will turn up in a church record in or near Campball Hall: John A. Weaver, born Nov., 1859, so likely baptised late 1859 or early 1860. (And of course, the parents' marriage would be a real kick!) I've had some incredible luck with this family just recently. I've found the baptism of Joseph Henry WEAVER, the ggrandfather above, in Anglican records in Quebec, along with names of witnesses/ sponsors from his mother, Mary BROWN's family. I still don't know if he was born in Orange Co. and baptised in Quebec, though, because there was a four-month gap between the two. What I'm trying to determine is whether the John A. WEAVER, who was 8 months old when the 1860 census was done in Hamptonburg is the same as Joseph's older brother, who'd be exactly that age. He's with a Mary WEAVER, but her age is 40 and she's b. in NY. Our Mary would have been between 22 and 32 and was b. in Ireland. Do you have any idea where the records of the first two of these churches might be found? I feel, finally, like these people are trying to let me find them! One thing about all this is that it feels so strange to be looking at places I lived near 40 years ago. Did I ever tell you that I taught in Washingtonville and Valley Central schools and lived in Salisbury Mills and Montgomery? I don't know how many times I drove past Campbell Hall! 3. Hi, Joy, I still haven't gotten over to the Newburgh Library but I did get to the Moffat this week and I looked in Ruttenber & Clark's 1881 History of Orange County, New York. In the Town of Hamptonburgh history the following churches are listed First Presbyterian Church of Hamptonburgh -- est. 1765 or 67, Route 207 Campbell Hall, NY 10916, (845) 427-2864 Started out as Associate Church of Neelytown then was the Associate Reformed Church of Hamptonburgh. St. David's Episcopal --est. 1832 No current listing. St. Anne's in Washingtonville, St. James in Goshen and St. Andrew's in Walden are the surrounding churches Methodist Episcopal of Otterville--est 1857 No obvious successor. Goshen Maybrook and Walden are closest modern churches I have notes on churches in some of the surrounding towns as well so if none of these pan out we can look at those. Margaret

    3. Looking for any information regarding John C. Monfort b. 1828 and Eleanor Traver Monfort b. 1836(?). Listed in Bangall, Dutchess Co. 1880 census. Eleanor Traver is sister to my grandmother Catherine E. Traver Green. I believe Eleanor to be older than this, as she is out of the home by 1850 and married and living in NYC in 1855. John served in the Civil War, 76th NY Inf. I would welcome anything, including cemetery or burial. I find parts of this family in Poughkeepsie and Rhinebeck. Loreen Wells

    3. Hi Pat, I see it pays to read your signature. Or remember what I read before. I would be interested to know what you find. Everything that was on line in December and January was panic. People went to vital records offices to access death records and were turned away, so they said. Now for deaths the California list I get only posts obits, "maiden names deleted per California law". Hi Loreen, I live in Sacramento and the library is only a light rail away...last time I was there which was about a year ago, they were still available, what they removed, I believe, are the records that were on a cd and for sale, plus I believe Rootsweb had them on line. They didn't have a cut off date like NYS has, so because of the stealing of people's identity problems, the law was passed to protect the living were in the database. 3. Hi Pat, Are you sure that the Sacramento Library still has these things available? If you are planning to use these records, I suggest you ask before you go all the way to California. Last winter I signed on to the California Death Index mailing list. What I found was a mad rush to get all of the death information possible before those records closed to the public as of June. It was frantic. Volunteers were making mad dashes to vital records offices to transcribe as many records as possible for people before the deadline. Most access seemed to stop as of Jan. 1 as counties chose to cut off access early, apparently to save money or staff time. As I understand this law, birth and marriage records were also affected. Further, all reference to maiden names are to be deleted from these public records. To get access to any of these you must supply paperwork that you are a relative within certain degrees. The degree of relationship allowed access is very restrictive. Plus, I think you have to show why you want access, although I might be wrong about that particular piece. This new law put a real kibosh on genealogical research in California. As I understand it, one of California's legislators discovered that maiden names and social security numbers were available on line and she was aghast. She promoted this law as a deterrent to identity theft. The irony is that she uses her maiden name in her public life and uses her own children's names in her campaign literature, so this list said. California genealogists have been trying to develop substitute methods for doing such research. Obituaries, for instance, can be used. If posted on line any maiden name must be deleted. There are on line sites, last I knew, still publishing the California death index. The law doesn't apply to what's done outside the state. However, I understand that rootsweb took the California information off their site as a result of this legislation. Efforts were under way when I signed on there to keep this law from going into effect. Those efforts were not successful. When I last was on that list, efforts were underway to modify the law. I don't know what's going on with it now. A separate site had to be set up to deal with the subject because so many people posted outraged messages to the death index list that it interfered with the list's primary function. About the time I signed off the CA list, I signed on to a Florida list, only to encounter a similar thing happening there. I sent for a Florida death certificate then. What I got had all nformation possibly useful for genealogy blocked out. I understood this kind of action was on the agenda for some other states as well. 3. I feel awful asking this, but if all CA deaths are recorded there, I may I "horn in" with a favor? I need to find a missing death date for Eliza (Libby) Silkworth Hunt. She was born in Richmond County, NY in 1845, married in Brooklyn, June 1866 and died in June 1896 in Pasadena, according to a penciled -in death record in the Family bible. I have not been able to find the Hunts but briefly in CA, tho I see George on the Voter Registration and also see an Eliza Hunt as a dressmaker in Pasadena City Directory in 1895. then I don't see either of them. It's not urgent, and I feel leechy asking you, but maybe you can put it on a to-do list for some other time? Thanks so much. Jan Miller, San Mateo--a displaced New Yorker. A reminder...complete LDS film # 134660 covering all alien declarations for Irish born filed in Rensselaer County Justice Court, Troy NY from middle of 1853 to middle of 1859, probably about 2,000 names. Information you will find: name, age, county of birth, port left from, date arrived in USA, residency and date filed. Residences in Rensselaer, Albany, Saratoga, Washington, etc. counties in NYS plus many from Vermont and MA plus from other parts of NYS including NYC. You can access the databases from two websites, mine at the URL below my name. Under New York State chose Troy. The AGHP Rensselaer County website at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~nyrenss2/ You can access the databases under two webpages: Naturalization/Citizenship under Genealogy and Troy under Cities. This week I will start transcribing the next film in this series covering the rest of 1859-1868. I hope to finish it before going back East in August. If you find a name that you think might be yours, I suggest you look at the film to check for accuracy because I do make mistakes and the handwriting was hard to read at times. Plus, you might just want a copy of the declaration, many were signed. What to do if you don't have a county? Might try looking at passenger records and see if the county is mentioned there. -- Pat Connors, Sacramento CA http://www.connorsgenealogy.com Professional Genealogy Research All outgoing mail virus free, scanned by Norton 2002
