I was wondering if anyone was related to these persons i found in the 1900 Census taken in Albany Co., Albany City: Joseph PATZIG 28 years old in 1900 born Sept. 1871, a Railroad Motorman born in NY, father born in Germany, mother born in NY. Renting part of a home at 36 Mohawk which was owned by Ann CORRIGAN, a 65 year old widow born in Ireland, living there with her son, James, a city Supervisor. Minnie (Wilemina De Vos) PATZIG, Joseph's wife of 2 years, 28 years old, born Sept. 1871 in New York, both parents born in the Netherlands ["Holland"] Nellie PATZIG born in NY in Aug of 1868, 9 months old. Nellie [Neeltje] DE VOS, mother-in-law to Joe Patzig, 63 year old widow of James De Vos, born in the Netherlands June 1836. They came to the US in 1869 and settled in Albany where James [Jacobus De Vos] was a laborer. Frank DE VOS, brother-in-law to Joe Patzig, 25, born Sept.1874 in NY, both parents born in the Netherlands, single, working as a carpenter. Please contact me if you know of any of these persons: Swimbails@aol.com Question: should i send this also to the NY-Mohawk Valley list as well or are most subscribers on both lists? Thank you, Jean Bails
Hello, If anyone is familiar with the streets of Albany and maybe also North Albany, I would be grateful for your help. I don't know if the streets still exist under the names I have from the City Directories of Albany in the 1870s where I found my De Vos on microfilm. The early directories were on reels at the Library of Michingan in Lansing. I have never been to Albany. I copied an enlarged version of the city map but it is not a very clear copy and probably does not show all the streets anyway. Here are the addresses i am looking for: 51 Sherman 30 Mohawk North near the Canal (I guess that means North Street) 25 North- corner of Washington Ave. 36 Mohawk Where is the canal? Do they mean the Hudson River I wonder? I found some general information but it did not help much--if i could have an area to look in, it would be much more helpful. Here is the general information copied from the Directory of 1874: Washington Ave. goes from Eagle, opposite city hall west to the city line. Sherman goes from Lark to Partridge St. Mohawk goes from Broadway westerly to North Albany (near Pearl St.) North St. goes from 1233 Broadway to the canal, North Albany Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Jean Wieland Bails in Michigan
I want to warn everyone of a new virus/worm. My server actually warned me because the email will look like it comes from your server/ISP but will have an attachment. Here is what they wrote: > You may have recently received an email or emails that appear to come > from "admin@sbcglobal.net," "admin@pacbell.net," "admin@swbell.net," > "admin@ameritech.net,” or similar address. This email is forged and > contains a virus inside a file usually named "message.zip" or contains > a subject line that includes the words "your account." To protect your > computer, please delete the email immediately and do not open the > attachment. The worm is called 'W32.Mimail.A@mm' and was just discovered yesterday. You can read about it here: http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.mimail.a@mm.html Again, I am going to take this time to remind you to get virus protection, if you don't have it. Get a subscription for Norton or another to keep your protection current. This worm was discovered yesterday, and as soon as I got on line, my virus protection was updated on my computer so if I get a email with the worm attachment, I will be warned by my Norton AntiVirus program. If you have a virus program, you should run your update program so you will get protection against this new one. Since I am going away tomorrow and will be using my laptop, I just renewed my Norton subscription for the laptop to protect it when I am away and only using the laptop to get my mail. It cost me $14.95 for the year, a bargain compared to repairing your computer after a worm or virus has infected it. Feel free to write me if you have questions. -- Pat Connors, Sacramento CA, listowner http://www.connorsgenealogy.com Professional Genealogy Research All outgoing mail virus free, scanned by Norton 2002

Cliff Lamere sent this message to the NY Rensselaer mailing list and has given me permission to send it to this list. The price of vital records certificates is definitely going up on August 1. And as I thought, the price rise will occur in every community of the state. For some reason, the state controls that price statewide in all jurisdictions. The new price will be $22. The New York Dept. of Health Vital Records is moving their office on about August 5. If I understood correctly, they are not opening mail as they get ready. I was told that there would be a mail-in grace period of about ten days, meaning that mail that arrives by around August 10 with the old price will be accepted (that date is not certain). Other applications will be returned to the sender. During the grace period, it may depend on what form is used. If the new form you download clearly says $22, they probably won't accept less than that during the grace period. The application form online still says $11. http://www.health.state.ny.us/nysdoh/vr/applications/genapp.htm -- Pat Connors, Sacramento CA http://www.connorsgenealogy.com Professional Genealogy Research All outgoing mail virus free, scanned by Norton 2002
I just returned from 3 weeks in NY and did exhaustive research there. I came home with about 6 inches of copies. I was researching Furman, Gifford in Berne and Furman and Whitcomb Ferguson Albany, I was also Andes, Delaware Co. for 2 days where I visited the Delaware County Clerks Office and Delaware Co. Historical Society, and the Public Library in Walton. I was searching information on the Bassetts, and Cushings in Andes, and William Furman in Walton I visited the New York State Library, New York State Archives and Manuscripts, Albany County Hall of Records Albany County Clerks Office Albany County Tax Office, Albany City Vital Records Office. Albany Public Library Berne Historical Society Rensselaerville Historical Society. New York Historical Society in Cooperstown. The library has tremendous records, books and films. They have an ongoing newspaper project, on film. The City Directory is on film. The Hall of records has -- the Albany City Directoy in books though several years are missing, -- original deed and mortgage books. They are wnderful large old books written in ink in fine handwriting. I was able to copy these originals. I saw the Grantee Grantor and Mortgage books found on film at the FHL in SLC. In those books I found it is important to read the notes as there is a wealth of information not indexed. The Archives has rules, some of which are cumbersome, the librarians chance frequently, so you aren't working with the same person each time you go. But after you jump the hoops, the material is wonderful. We ordered 12-15 items so went back the next day. I handled the Survey Book of the Van Rensselaer Manor 1787, and his lease book.. Very exciting to touch such old and delicate pages. I don't believe it has been filmed. I was told that only 292 of the Van Renssaelar documents have been inventoried, with many more to go through, and most haven't been indexed. Unfortunately the specific item I was searching wasn't recorded there. They copied the material for me.... I haven't yet been able to go through it in detail. I found a photo copy of an Atlas of the City of Albany 1876 at an antique store which had information on building that are no longer standing. My great grandfather wrote in a letter that he had ice cream, at Ash Grove Church. It is on the atlas, but no longer standing on the site. At the Tax office I was able to get a copy of the lot my ancestors owned in the 1800's and the numbers are the same. At the County clerk's office I got a copy of a deed. Albany City for a Death Record. $11 going up to $22. At the New York Historical Society, which asks for a $9.00 non member use, they have the Albany City Directories books for all years. The great fun was going to the addresses listed for my 2nd great grandfather, his mother, his sister and his children in the City of Albany. Several are now under the Empire Plaza of State Offices, but several are still standing and I took pictures. Some had address of their business too. And the family is buried in Albany Rural Cemetery. If you visit that Cemetery, be sure to ask for a copy of both the front and back of the cards and the plot map. I got different and additional information from each. It was a great trip. Unfortunately I didn't break through the brick walls as I hoped, but have added information to the preponderance of evidence. Marita
Thanks for the URL, Marge. I went there and it's a fascinating place. Then I "backed up" to get to the beginning and found and bookmarked some other fascinating sites for those researching NY. The maps of forts in the Revolutionary War are just great. Jean
Thought this might interest some of you with background information for your genealogy. There are also map links, showing fort locations during different time frames. http://www.dmna.state.ny.us/forts/forts4.html Marge
I did a Whitepages.com Reverse Address lookup on 256 Van Ness in 12550 and came up with nothing. I can't say for that exact address but a lot of the south side of Van Ness is parking lots or delivery areas for the businesses on B'way. Next time I am up that way, I'll take a look. A week from today I will be starting a three month long trip that will take me to PA, NY, DC, MA, CT and Ireland. While I will have my laptop with me, I won't be on line as often as when I am home. At best, I'll be able to check the lists and my email once a day but at times it might be less so I would like to give a short tutorial on how to troubleshoot some of your mailing list problems you may encounter and if you can't reach me quickly this my help you to solve your problem(s). Today I received and email from someone who said she hadn't received any emails from a particular list for a few days...okay, to solve this problem, you need to know was the list just slow or was something wrong with her subscription to it? Here's two ways to check: 1. Go to the lists archives and see if any emails have been posted to the list that you have not received. Use the browse function and then sort chronologically. If there has been messages posted that you haven't received, check to see if you are still subbed to the list, see #2. 2. Go to Rootsweb's Password Central and request a list of all the mailing lists that you are subscribed to. Suppose you try to unsubscribe from the list and it doesn't work or you get a message that you are not subscribed to the list but you continue to receive mail from it: 1. If you sent the unsubscribe message to the list, it won't work. 2. Do you belong to the L version and trying to unsub from D or do you belong to D and trying to unsub from L? 3. Did you forget to add 'request' to the email address. 4. Do you have more than one email address, and trying to unsub with the one that is not subbed to the list? You sent a message to the list, and it did not post: 1. Did you use the correct address? 2. Did you include 'request' in your address? This is only used to sub and unsub, not post. 3. Did you send it to 'D'? All member both L and D subscribers, use L to post messages. 4. Do you have more than one email address and you sent it with the one that is not subbed to the list? Here are some Rootsweb mailing lists websites, that I suggest you bookmark: The index of all the Rootsweb mailing lists. Each list has it's own webpage, where you can email the listowner if you don't know her/his name and email address. At the webpage you can also, subscribe or unsubscribe to the list and access the lists archives through browse and search functions. If you click on 'browse', you can look at the list's messages by month. Once you click on the month, you will get all the titles of the messages posted that month, at the top you can set your view for chronological order, by date. If you click on 'search', you get to search on your key word(s) by year. http://lists.rootsweb.com If you can not find our mailing list, please write to the list and I'll be happy to show you how to find it. By writing to the list, everyone will learn. The password central is another good place to bookmark. Here is the place where you can find what lists you are subscribed to: http://passwordcentral.rootsweb.com/ Where is says, 'E-mail address with which you registered for any of the below:' put in your email address (if you have more than one, you will have to repeat the process for each one). Then go to 'Mailing Lists:' and click the box that says, "To which lists am I subscribed?' You will then receive, to the email address you inserted in the box, all the lists that are subbed to that address. If you lose this link, go to the Rootsweb home page (http://www.rootsweb.com), under Help, you will find a link for 'Password Central'. I hope the above helps. If you have anymore questions, about mailing lists, please feel free to email your questions to the list. I have a week to fully explain how you can help yourself, in case it takes more than a day or two to reach me. I also want to thank all of you for your input and your unselfish contributions in helping others and myself to make this list so much fun to be the listowner. -- Pat Connors, Sacramento CA, listowner http://www.connorsgenealogy.com Professional Genealogy Research All outgoing mail virus free, scanned by Norton 2002
Hi Lena, If you go to Mapquest, type in the address and the zip code (12550), click on get a map and you'll have a map showing the location in Newburgh. Even though I grew up in Newburgh, I've printed of these maps for each location, when I have an exact address and included them in my genealogy. I figured that just because I knew where they were, someone else, somewhere down the line might like to know where these locations are. I know I would like to have them for all of my 'people'. It adds to the detail of my genealogy. Hi Margaret, I remember both the soda fountain and the Commodore, we used to go there for Christmas and Easter candy. I was born in Newburgh in 1922 and grew up there. Lots of good memories of it. Hi, Barbara, I live about 15 minutes from Lander St. and it is still a place to avoid at night, esp, N.Lander. I suppose it has improved some in the past few years but it is still pretty run down. Broadway has been repaved so driving is somewhat better but we are losing the brick streets all the time. The area south of B'way near Washington's Headquarters is looking up a bit. I was born in Newburgh in 1922 and it was a lovely place to grow up in. I saw a program on TV showing Lander Street as crack alley. It was a nice street in the old days.
