The Troy Irish Genealogy Society (TIGS) was launched this month by a group of Troy Irish genealogists/family researchers. If you would like to check out their website, here is the URL: http://www.rootsweb.com/~nytigs/ There is no charge to join, the group is still defining it's mission. The only requirement to belong is to have ancestors of Irish nationality who lived in Troy and/or close surrounding areas. -- Pat Connors, visiting Sharon Springs NY Professional Genealogy Researcher http://www.connorsgenealogy.com All outgoing mail virus free. I am trying to find the parents and birthplace of Abel Smith. He is my paternal grandmother's grandfather. He was born June 9, 1769 in, it appears, either Norwalk or Norwich, Connecticut. He married Abigail Hazen, the daughter of Caleb Hazen and Sarah Hamblin in Carmel NY on January 3, 1790. He was a farmer in Carmel and Philipstown, what in is now Putnam County, NY. He died in New York City Sept. 1, 1821. The mysteries of the names of his parents and the place in which he was born. Any help much appreciated. Craig Baxter cbaxter@pennswoods.net
Here is a new one...Wormautomat HRB It is so new that Norton stops it (thank goodness since 1/3 of my mail this morning was loaded with it) but has no real info on it. I did a google search and didn't find anything on it either. So, this is a heads-up to be aware of a new worm/virus. Again, don't open attachments of any kind when you don't know they are coming. -- Pat Connors, visiting Wynantskill NY, listowner Professional Genealogy Researcher http://www.connorsgenealogy.com All outgoing mail virus free. Wrong virus. SoBig attacks all Windows versions since 3.1 (which it does NOT attack). How often you scan is far less important than how often you download virus definitions. The scan only detects the virus if it has already arrived in your machine. If your virus definitions are up to date you will most likely avoid that contingency. I was glad to see you mention firewalls. For SoBig, I noted that my firewall had secured the virus attachments that had arrived BEFORE the updated virus definitions were available. Regarding a SpyWare detection package, I replaced AdAware, which I had been using, with SpyBot Search and Destroy based on the recommendation in PC Magazine, and discovered that SpyBot discovered numerous issues on a machine that AdAware had just given a clean bill of health. And finally, I think it is a crime that people interested in genealogy should have to be discussing arcane matters of this nature just to pursue our avocation! Cheers!! Geoff Brown www.betweenthelakes.com -----Original Message----- >From all accounts, this virus is only attacking Windows XP and Windows 2000. I use Windows Me
I already received 300+ a day of Sobig messages since last Tuesday. I am using webmail (Mail2web.com) to delete those offending ones now. There are some interesting pieces that news or investigators aren't telling. None of the addresses came from address books. Period. Why? I ran searches on every address listed as senders. Guess what? At least 50 percent of them are from archived Rootsweb mailing lists, from various Rootsweb county sites, various non- Rootsweb county sites, various family sites, etc., etc. Even business corporation websites. It is as if the author had been deliberately collecting the addresses in advance of launching Sobig.F virus. Right Now I am still getting messages from two certain ISPs (Charter.com and Roadrunner - rr.com) and they haven't done anything to stop them despite repeated complaints despite their replies. Will contact attorney general of Utah since Utah has anti-spam law that was used against Sprint recently very successfully. Fines can be collected - to tune of $500.00 per message and I already have more than 300 accumulated spams, all from those two ISPs. (only Utah residents are eligible ) David
From all accounts, this virus is only attacking Windows XP and Windows 2000. I use Windows Me I have my mail set up that I do not keep copies of email sent. If I want to keep a copy, I add a bcc. I only put senders name for Lists. i.e., NY-HUDSONRV or ONT-D. For individuals, I use the bcc so it goes out as undisclosed recipients. The only time orig emailer shown is when I do a reply or reply all. I scan my machine every morning when I startup and at 5pm. I use a firewall and adaware. My tech thinks I scan too often, but to my mind, today you have to to keep your machine workable. Thanks for listening Pat Corney bluroc@worldnet.att.net

This is on the front page of the NY Times today: "As a computer virus named SoBigF swamped email inboxes, wreaking havoc on individual PC's and corporate computer systems, computer security experts around the world spent a tense day trying to stop a more potentially serious electronic time bomb from going off: SoBig carries an attachment that, if opened, instructs the infected computer to communicate with 20 host PC's that, most likely unknown to their owners, were planted with a mystery program. But the experts did not know what would then happen to the infected machines, or what instructions they would be given....." The article goes on to say they identified 17 of the computers and Norton says the other three just direct people to a porn website. I know some of you out there are infected with this virus/worm because I am still getting infected mail...with various list names and even getting some with my own email address. So, they are coming from people who belong to some of the lists I manage or post to and you have the lists' addresses and my address in your address book. Some address books, by default, collect all emails addressed from each and every email that is sent....so maybe it would be good if you look in your mail programs utilities and change that feature so only addresses you wanted added to the book go into it. I suggest everyone who receives this email, immediate scan their computer for viruses and/or worms. If you can't afford to buy and subscribe to an updated program, there are free services on line. If you want to take advantage of the wonderful benefits of genealogy mailing lists, then take the responsibility that goes along with them and get virus protection. If you got this virus it is for one main reason...you opened an attachment. Well, you were lucky this time around...the next time it might get all your banking info and credit card info and then you will be in a financial mess. Or it might disable your computer for good. So remember..don't open attachments you don't know anything about, even they came to you from you best friend or relative and GET virus protection. If you need help, don't hesitate to email me off list. I will be in PA for the next two weeks and on my laptop fairly regular now that all the sightseeing is done for a while and I don't have to pay for each minute on line. -- Pat Connors, visiting Glen Mills PA, listowner Professional Genealogy Researcher http://www.connorsgenealogy.com All outgoing mail virus free. This morning I received 871 emails, of that number, 726 had the following subjects: Wicked screensaver, Thank you, That Movie, Your application, Your details, My details, Details, Approved. These were sent by an infected computer with the Sobig, mass mailing worm. Please read: http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.sobig.f@mm.html Again, you MUST use anti virus software for your computer. You can use free or paid virus protection. If you are new to computers, here is Rootsweb's tutorial on viruses/worms: http://helpdesk.rootsweb.com/virus.html In the meantime, don't open mail with attachments. Send them to trash immediately and then empty you trash bin. You can set you filters to the above subjects and they will automatically go to trash. Well, I am off for the day to take my grandson sightseeing and then tonight to a Broadway play, hopefully when I get back I won't have another 900 emails... -- Pat Connors, visiting New York City, listowner Professional Genealogy Researcher http://www.connorsgenealogy.com All outgoing mail virus free. Well, another one has hit the internet and this one is bad if you use Windows 2000 and Windows XP....it is a worm/virus called Blaster and today closed down the Maryland DMV...made national TV and is at a high threat assessment in less than 24 hours according to Norton. Check it out at: http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.blaster.worm.html Again, don't open attachments, keep your windows up to date, check out Microsoft for patches, have an up to date virus program and keep it current and....scan your computer frequently, at least once per week.
