I'm not sure where he lived but his son Caleb was in Columbia Co 1790, went to Oneida Co, then Hamilton Co, and later to western NY. My Benjamin's Bible does not record a Rowland though. John, the Nichols family was in the Pawling area around the time of the Revolution but I don't show anything (yet) on Benjamin Nichols. If his branch of the family shows up I will get in touch with you. Frank
Frank- I see you'll be taking on the Nichols in a future volume. Am interested in Benjamin Nichols from Amesbury. He married a couple of Quaker gals. Seems to have been involved in Quaker land transactions - shows in Nine Partners in 1747, in Easton Washington Co in the 1780's, in Hoosick Rensselaer Co in the 1790 census. Seems to have gone into St. Lawrence County NY about 1810 or thereabouts. He also shows as founder of a town in Vermont. Is Nine Partners in your area of concern? Benjamin's son Rowland Nichols appears to be an ancestor. Rowland's daughter Mary married the John Chapman that we've spent so much time and effort trying to track down in your Chapman section. Let me know. Be happy to share what I have on Benjamin. Hi Everyone I'm working on a huge set of records for my new site NaturalizationRecords.com at http://naturalizationrecords.com/ The set of records are Declarations of Intent in New York 1827- 1895, from the Justice's Court, Albany, New York Declarations of Intent are a first step towards finding an ancestor's immigration year, and from there a ships passenger list. The Index to Book 2 & 3 is being put online as it is transcribed. A volunteer is helping me with this and she deserves a very big "Thank you!" for working so hard. More names will follow as time permits. For now, you can enjoy the index to Surnames for years 1832-1836 which begins at http://naturalizationrecords.com/usa/nyintent_a1833.shtml You can also start at the Online Records for New York found at http://naturalizationrecords.com/usa/ny_onlinedb.shtml I am always looking for volunteers to help with transcribing records. If you would like to help bring genealogy records online for all to use freely, please contact me at otg@csolve.net Feel free to pass this announcement on to anyone you think would be interested. Sorry to upset everyone, but I have now learned that what I was told was a virus isn't and if you did remove what the email said, you need to reinstall it. Evie
All, First I offer my apology for the inconvenience. Second, I'll say that this was passed to me and I checked and I had the files in my computer. I have no idea how that happened, but am forwarding for your awareness. On a brighter note, hope you are all doing well :) And I suppose this is one way to keep in touch, though I think friendly emails are a better and more enjoyable option...Take care. If anyone knows more about this virus, I'm interested. Seems a bit odd, but apparently true. I'm sorry to say that I found the nasty little virus described below on my hard drive. It's possible that it may have been automatically transmitted to anyone in my address book. Please read the message below that was sent to me and follow the directions to rid your computer of this bug if you find it. This is not a joke, serious damage could occur to your computer. Luckily, it's easy to get rid of it, but do this now! A virus has been passed on to me by a contact. MY address book in turn has been infected. Since you are in my address book there is a chance that you will find it in your computer too. I followed the instructions below and eradicated the virus easily. The virus (called jdbgmgr.exe) is not detected by Norton or Mcafee anti-virus system. This virus sits quietly for 14 days before damaging the system. Messenger and the address book send it automatically, whether or not you send emails to your contacts. Here's how to check for the virus and get rid of it: 1. Go to start, Find or Search option 2. In the file/folders option, type the name: jdbgmgr.exe 3. Be sure you search your C-drive and all the sub-folders and any other drives you may have. 4. Click: "Find now" 5. The virus has a grey teddy bear icon with the name jdbgmgr.exe- DO NOT OPEN IT 6. Go to edit (on the menu bar) and choose SELECT ALL to highlight the file without opening it. 7. Now go to the File (on the menu bar) and select DELETE. It will then go the recycle bin. 8. Go to the Recycle Bin and delete it there as well. IF YOU FIND THE VIRUS, you must contact all the people in your address book, so they can eradicate it >in their own address books. To do this: 1. Open a new email message 2. Click the icon of the address book next to the "To" 3. Highlight every name and add >to "BCC" 4. Copy this message, enter subject and paste to email, and send Please remember, you have to do this very quickly...

Found on NYC Roots list: NYG&B http://www.nygbs.org/info/articles/nyc_vital_records.html Prior to 1866, vital records were kept in registers, or ledgers, where each event was entered on one line, with columns for the different parts of the registration. For example, the earliest death registers of the City of New York have columns for date, name, address, age, birthplace, cause of death, cemetery, and sexton. Each register was divided into sections for the letters of the alphabet, and events were recorded under the first letter of the last name, in chronological order. Thus, while many registers are unindexed, the researcher can quickly locate the part of the register where the event should be recorded, as long as an approximate date is known. In 1866 New York City and Brooklyn began to issue certificates, as is done today, but they also continued to maintain ledgers for many years (they survive to 1879 for Brooklyn, 1887 for New York). The Municipal Archives has both certificates and ledgers for these years, and researchers who cannot find or cannot read a certificate should be aware of the ledgers' existence. In the towns and villages, registers or ledgers were kept beginning in 1847 and again in 1881. Starting in the latter year these jurisdictions also issued certificates, which were sent to the State Department of Health. While the certificates are thus in Albany, the registers passed into New York City's possession and are now at the Municipal Archives. Go to that site for more good information. -- Pat Connors, Sacramento CA http://www.connorsgenealogy.com All outgoing mail virus free, scanned by Norton 2002
We have just added another 50 pages to the on line 1870 federal census for Yonkers. So far, we have the first 100 pages of the census on line. It includes 503 dwellings, 632 families and 3,976 individuals. It was transcribed mostly by June Howard with help from Carol Lofton. This is an on-going project since Yonkers has 464 pages. Carol has now moved to New Rochelle and is working on that city. If anyone would like to help, you can contact me off list. You can find the census at the url below my name. On my homepage, go to New York State, then to Yonkers. Please be advised, this should be used only as an index. The handwriting was hard to read, the enumerator misspelled many surnames and we transcribed them as he spelled them. You should use this as a resource tool and always refer to the census itself for a source record. -- Pat Connors, Sacramento CA http://www.connorsgenealogy.com All outgoing mail virus free, scanned by Norton 2002
