Hi Joy: Yes, my cousin Jeanne Daley had very good success with retrieving a death certificate from Troy. The Deputy registrar's name is Heather Holmes in the Troy, NY City Hall, Phone Number: 518-270-4587. My cousin Jeanne described Heather as a "real doll". Jeanne was very pleased with the cooperation she received. Cost of the Certificate is $ 11.00. From what I have heard if you have the date of death it is probably quicker to order from Troy. I have ordered many and when I had a specific date, it was basically turn around mail. I have never ordered from the state, however, but have heard that it sometimes takes six months or longer. -- Pat Connors, Sacramento CA http://www.connorsgenealogy.com All outgoing mail virus free, scanned by Norton 2002

Hello List I just found this list and hope someone can point me in the right direction. I am researching Obediah Brown who "from age 14-29 worked as a boatman on the Hudson River. He married Mary Weist in Ulster co, NY." This came from a bio about his grandson who was my ggrandfather. There were at least 3 Obediah Brown's around in that time period (c1830-ish) and it is all very confusing. Have any books or articles been written about boatmen on the Hudson or can anyone suggest resources about boatmen. Apparently the other 2 Obediah's were not boatmen so this could be a way to seperate them. Any help or advice is much appreciated. I am really happy to announce that the NYGBS has added HeritageQuest Online to it's already large resources. If you join NYGBS ($60 per year), you will get full access to many data bases and now to HeritageQuest which has all the federal census images from 1790 to 1930 with indexes to many and within a few months will have indexes to all. Plus, they have a library including many directories which you can search and browse. A few months ago I subscribed to Genealogy.com which merged with HeritageQuest. At Genealogy.com for only the censuses, it cost me $99 per year. I don't know what Ancestry.com costs but I would bet that NYGBS is cheaper. Plus, their images are great and you can increase them to 400% to help on your eyes. You can save an image and print an image. I have belonged to NYGBS for a year now and am really sorry I subbed to Genealogy.com. I could have saved $99! Here is the website where you can also check out what they have. http://www.nygbs.org/index.html -- Pat Connors, Sacramento CA http://www.connorsgenealogy.com All outgoing mail virus free, scanned by Norton 2002

Hi, Pat: You said <Here is a must bookmark if you need a naturalization record from either Manhattan or the Bronx: http://www.italiangen.org/southern_district_records_intro.stm It is a work in progress that will, when completed, have 500,000 records in the index. It covers naturalizations from 1906 to 1949.> Noticing the URL, I wonder if it is all records, or just Italian records? I have a friend whose parents came from Ireland I think about 1914, and would like to tell him about this. I think he said his mother was on the last Lusitania trip (the one before it was sunk!) TIA Jean
What would be the odds of Orange county having the birth record for an 1872 birth in Warwick? If they do have it, what information would it be expected to contain? Will it give the parents' actual place of origin or will it, like the census, just list "Ireland"? If I can find an RC church in Warwick, would it be likely to have baptismal records after all this time? If so, would it provide more information than a birth certificate? The family lived in Chester, but my grandfather was born in Warwick - at least according to his death certificate. I don't know why, or even how far apart the two towns are. Any answers greatly appreciated. Thanks. Kathryn
from book: New York Genealogical Research by George Schweitzer, 1988 Shortly after the midpoint of the 19th century, some larger NY cities began keeping birth records: NY City (1847-52 some, then 1853-), Brooklyn (some 1866-), Albany (1870-), Syracuse (1873-), Utica (1873-), Rochester (1875-), Yonkers (1875-), Buffalo (1878-). Then in 1880 a state law mandating registration was passed, and compliance gradually increased to 50% by about 1900 and 90% by about 1915, when a more stringent law came into effect. The records are available as follows. For NY County (1847-), Kings County (some 1866-, 1880-), Queens County (1847-9, 1880-), Kings County (some 1866-, 1880-), Queens County (1847-9, 1880-), Richmond County (some 1847-52, 1880-), Bronx County (1914-), Albany (1870-1914), Syracuse (1873-80), Utica (1873-80), Rochester (1875-80), Yonkers (1875-1914), and Buffalo (1878-1914), records should be sought in the county or city offices for the dates indicated. For Albany (1915-), Yonkers (1915-), Buffalo (1915-), and all the rest of the state (1880-) except the 5 counties of NY City, write or visit: --NY State Department of Health, Bureau of Vital Records, Corning Tower Building, Empire State Plaza, Albany, NY 12237. Records indexed. Public access to birth records prior to 1913 is available, but those after are restricted. (my two-cents--this was written in 1988 so more records may be available after 1913) Since NY is so short on Official birth records before 1880 (1853 for NYC), other types of records often have to be consulted. Among the better ones are Bible, biography, cemetery, census, church, death, genealogical periodicals, manuscripts, marriage, military, mortuary, naturalization, newspaper, and published genealogies. All of these are treated in other sections of this chapter (my two cents-future postings). Numerous non-offical sources of this sort are listed in the two books by Stemmons and Eakle cited in the first paragraph (my two cents-see the first post I sent) of this section. When you are seeking birth date and place information in archives and libraries, be certain to explore all the above mentioned sources, and do not fail to look under the county listings and following heading in library catalogs: Registers of births, etc. -- Pat Connors, Sacramento CA http://www.connorsgenealogy.com All outgoing mail virus free, scanned by Norton 2002
I am doing research for a Vital Records website for the Manhattan site I coordinate for the NY History and Genealogy Project and found a book in the LDS Family History Library with items I would like to share. The book is called, New York Genealogical Research by George Schweitzer, 1988. Birth Records: During the period of Dutch control (1609-64), the New Netherland government did not keep official civil birth records, leaving this task to the church. Many of these records will be found in: --T.G.Evans, RECORDS OF THE REFORMED DUTCH CHURCH IN NEW AMSTERDAM/NEW YORK CITY, BAPTISMS, 1639-1800, NY Genealogical and Biographical Society, New York, NY, 19001-2, 2 volumes. When the English took the colony over (1664), they had a law requiring ministers of parishes and clerks of towns to record births, but the colony never systematically enforced the regulation, and only a few records were kept. Early records of births were included in the town minutes for a number o NY towns, especially those on Long Island, where this New England custom was practiced. This town record keeping did not spread, but declined. The situation of practically no birth recording continued until 1847 when a law requiring birth registration in towns was passed. Fair conformity to the law was seen during 1847-49/50, but the system largely failed thereafter. Many of the fragmentary records mention above will be found in town and county records, many have been published in NY genealogical periodicals (Tree Talks, NY Genealogical and Biographical Record), some have been microfilmed by the FHL, and few are at NYSL and NYSA. Listings of a number of those available will be found in: --J.D. and E. D. Stemmons, THE VITAL RECORD COMPENDIUM, Everton Publishers, Logan UT, 1979. --A.H. Eakle and L.R. Gunn, DESCRIPTIVE INVENTORY OF THE NY COLLECTION, University of UT Press, Salt Lake City UT, 1980. --Historical Records Survey, GUIDE TO PUBLIC VITAL STATISTICS IN NY STATE, INCLUDING NY CITY, WPA, Albany, NY, 1942, 1st Volume. -- -- Pat Connors, Sacramento CA http://www.connorsgenealogy.com All outgoing mail virus free, scanned by Norton 2002
Here is a must bookmark if you need a naturalization record from either Manhattan or the Bronx: http://www.italiangen.org/southern_district_records_intro.stm It is a work in progress that will, when completed, have 500,000 records in the index. It covers naturalizations from 1906 to 1949. -- Pat Connors, Sacramento CA http://www.connorsgenealogy.com All outgoing mail virus free, scanned by Norton 2002
Nine Partners Patent is close enough to Columbia County, NY to be of interest, I would think. Cheers!! Geoff Brown
