    3. Dr. Elbert Warner Phillips passed away on August 21, 2004 in Syracuse, New York. Many genealogy buffs were assisted by him. In the end he collected over 60,000 "dead relatives" and corresponded with people all over the globe. I hope I did not miss anyone, Sincerely, Cliff Phillips Dr. Elbert Warner Phillips, MD, 73, of Henderson, NY, a former Buffalo area resident, and distinguished Radiologist died Saturday, August 21st surrounded by his family at St. Joseph's Hospital, Syracuse, NY after a brief illness. He was born November 26, 1931 in Gowanda, NY. He spent his youth in South Dayton, NY and graduated in 1949 from Gowanda High School. He graduated in 1953 from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (R.P.I.) at Troy, NY with a BS in Biology and a minor in Chemical Engineering. In 1956 he joined the Army Reserve at 1st Army Headquarters on Governor's Island, NYC as a 2nd Lieutenant. He received his M.D. in 1957 from Upstate Medical Center at Syracuse, NY. He completed his Rotating Internship at Fitzsimons General Hospital, Denver, CO. as a 1st Lieut. in 1958. He finished his Basic Weapons training, Fort Sam Houston, San Antonio TX., 1958. He completed his Residency in General Radiology (including Radiation Therapy & Nuclear Medicine), at Fitzsimons General Hospital, as a Capt. in the Regular Army Medical Corps. 1961. He also completed his special training in nuclear weapons ordinance, Sandia Base, Albuquerque Nuclear Weapons Depot in 1961. He was an active member of the Nuclear Emergency Team (NET). He was Chief of Radiology ,U.S. Army Hospital, at the U.S. Military Academy, West Point, NY from 1963 till he retired with the rank of Major from the Army in 1965. On September 3, 1955, he married Elizabeth Jane Clark at Our Lady of Solace Church in Syracuse, NY. In June of 1965 he started to practice at Deaconess Hospital in Buffalo. He designed and equipped a new diagnostic radiology office for Century X-Ray Associates in 1973. During the merger of Deaconess & Buffalo General Hospitals he also designed the x-ray department for the new hospital. He was an Associate Professor of Radiology at the UB Medical School for 25 years and collected extensive teaching files for radiology . In 1985 he became Chief of Diagnostic Radiology at the Buffalo General Hospital. He led a consortium of 7 hospitals and their radiology groups to purchase the first 1.5 Testa super-conducting M.R.I. in Buffalo. He retired from the Buffalo General Hospital in July of 1990. He donated his teaching files to the UB Medical School. His work was published in medical journals and presented at conferences. He also was a member of numerous medical organizations. His love of family and history inspired him for over 30 years to research his family genealogy ("collecting dead relatives"). He spent his retirement years doing woodworking, reading, bird watching, gardening, and enjoying his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Survivors include: his wife of 49 years, the former Elizabeth Jane Clark ; three daughters; Linda Prather of West Point, IN, Judy Phillips of Forestville, NY, Sandra Kleftis of Lebanon, PA, three sons; Clifford Phillips of North Tonawanda, NY, David Phillips of North Tonawanda, NY, Brent Phillips of Clarence, NY; ten grandchildren, and 2 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents Lois and Warner Phillips, his brother Elmore, and his daughter Colleen Jane.
