    3. Denise, if Mary was born in NY State: Try NYS Census every 5 years between the USA Federal Census every 10 years 1800, 1810, 1820, 1830 The later USA Census would have Pittsburgh, PA, USA. Here the Later Day Saints have local Family History Centers with many records and internet access. They have NYS Census and you could get the Pittsburgh, PA USA Census on Genealogy.com or Ancestry.com. You can try it free for 14 days. It may work for you on New York 1830. You do need to know what county they might have lived in - unless your family name is uncommon. These brave souls contributed to the development of the area of Victoria Aust. in which we are researching and as such they deserve to be recorded in its history. One of these people was Mary Louisa Devoe born New York. We know nothing about Mary except she was born in New York around 1826 (working back from age given on her death in 1870) and that she married George SCOTT born ??. In circa 1881/52 the couple were running a gambling saloon in Nevada City Cal. and in 1852 they came to Australia and had children, most died young. However in 1858, once son George Winfield SCOTT died and his birth place given was PITT. Now Pitt could mean a place in Victoria and it could mean perhaps Pittsburgh USA. He was aged 11. If 11 years he was born in the USA. If 11 days or months obviously born in Victoria. Perhaps more children were born in USA - I have the ship they travelled here on, but have not been able to access the shipping list itself to ascertain the number in the family who came here. We would dearly love to find something on Mary, to confirm where she was born and to whom. The ultimate would be to find a connection to the family. We are very happy to share the data we have found on the family with anyone who connects. Mary's name was once shown as DEVEAUX on official records but most times DEVOE. 3. Hi Sister Susan and all, How often was this NYS census done? Did it continue up to 1855? Did they list everyone in the family or just head of the household? This could open so many new doors. 3. Sandy, New York State has excellent Records New York State Census Records exist for 1825, 1835, 1845, 1855, 1865, 1875, (I'M NOT SURE IF THEY HAD ONE IN 1885 or before 1835) but I have used the one they did after the 1890 USA Census burned up. NYS did one in 1892 to fill in. Also I have used 1905, 1915, 1925. There might be one in 1935. If so, it would be released SOON now because it's 70 years old. The New York State Census, A General Form with Additions for Some Years has: District Town/City Page County Date Taken Dwelling Number Type of Construction Value Names of all family members & persons living with the family on the first day of June (1865 includes those away in the army or navy) Age, Sex, Color or race, Relations to family head, County of New York, state or nation where person was born. Of how many children the parent (1865) Number of times married (1865) Now married Now widowed Single (1855, 1875) Profession, Trade or Occupation Years residency (1855) Usual place of employment (1855) Native Voters Naturalized Aliens Colored persons not taxed Land owner Over 21 and Illiterate Blind, Deaf, Dumb, Idiot, Insane, etc. -----Original Message----- From: Phil & Sandy Carneiro [mailto:pacshc@verizon.net] Sent: Friday, May 13, 2005 10:00 PM To: NY-CENTRA-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [NYCENTRAL] Mary Louisa DEVOE born circa 1828 New York Hi Sister Susan and all, How often was this NYS census done?
