    3. Hi--I think your site is wonderful. I have been in touch with someone who has ancestry with the same name as my ancestors--DeGroff. Although I have been to Cayuga County to do research, the ability to share with others is helpful. 3. To Charles Harris and others on the list. About tourism / genealogy researching, and FINDING research sites on-line. Last year, a friend and I had 3 wonderful weeks from ME. to NYS. Visited 2 sites in New Haven ,VT ; crossed L.Champlain into a family connection at Whiteface Mt.;' toured my friend to Albany, down the Hudson as far as West Point; back through the Catskills to Cortland Co. [my home county], then toured the Finger Lakes area. Before leaving, I had tried to use various county websites looking for either local history resources or phone or address contacts to make use of. It seemed to me that many of these geared for tourists have NO idea that genealogists ARE TOURISTS AND SPEND MONEY when they travel and that if they could more easily find cemeteries, historical and genealogical societies, churches,etc.--through county site listings--more of this group of travelers would come and spend money in their area. My opinion is that many county sites are manned by young working people and ancestor - hunting is so low on their radar they do not think of people who do this as a source of revenue. In addition, some seemed to have been manned almost entirely be Chamber of Commerce or Real Estate people as those were the bulk of listings . Two counties listed a Historical society . Lake Placid had a lot on the connections to past Olympics and skiing--that kind of thing. It seems to me that if people in genealogy who know active business people could get to either individuals or to such meetings and 'talk up' what genealogy visitors need during a visit, this could often be remedied. Better yet, if various Genealogy Societies could make up a brochure of such material from its knowledgeable resources and just GIVE a copy to the correct persons producing a county website--the producers would be only too happy to include the genealogy resource information. Wouldn't this make a good community-service project for ANY Genealogy Society? I live in soggy southern CA. and cannot afford to come east often. But, anyone ,please feel free to use these suggestions anywhere it might be helpful. 2. MScheffler
    3. Bill and others, I retired and thought I could perhaps take day trips (once per week?) around central NY to visit all the small towns where ancestors likely lived. Then I started babysitting my toddler granddaughter, so that project will take a back seat for a couple years. I have only made one day trip researching with a friend in almost a year. I do appreciate what is on line and online materials have helped me significantly. However, online material DOES NOT replace going to the actual towns and historical societies. Many of them have files of correspondence, cemetery lists, old town histories, etc. Some even have notes in them that other researchers have left adding to what is published in the book. Even whole books used online do not replace holding a book in one's hand and leafing through it. One sees so much more looking through materials and pondering what one sees, than jumping to a name from a search engine. There is an added dimension to the research trips when one can walk in the cemetery or go to where the family farm was located and actually "feel" the presence of those that you search. 3. Bill: Thanks for all you do to keep us "connected". I have loved the pictures and sad to say,I have never visited much of the North end of the county. I am a "South of Auburn" guy. Born in Moravia and visit twice a year, usually for a couple weeks at a time. My ancestors were very early into Cayuga and Onondaga Counties.I believe that, for some people, there is less actual travel as a result of the internet access people have. There is no time for many people to visit the places their people come from. But,I also think there is more travel for many people,as they have a lot of data to guide them when they arrive and don't waste as much time when they get there. So all in all,the info sites are a plus. I seriously doubt that there is much "loss of revenue" if any. 3. It would be wonderful to travel and research but I do not have the money to do so. I feel very lucky if I can buy a book or two a year. People who put information on line for us to look at and people who take the time to do look up's for people are nothing short of being an angel. My ancestors I guess were gyspies because they came from all over with the exception of the state I am living in. Thank you to each and every one of you that goes out of your way for the rest of us. From the bottom of my heart I do appreciate it. Bill I look at those pictures and try to picture my ancestors there and it is great. I will never make it up there but in my mind I can see it. I realize when someone goes to a cemetery and writes down the information there will be some mistakes, that is just the way it is. But to have the names there and to know your ancestor is there is a true blessing. Linda's standards are understandable and commonly subscribed to, but I believe perhaps too stringent particularly as the years continue to pass. I've driven 800 miles to photograph a cemetery monument that has become unreadable. I've also driven from Chicago twice to central NY and beyond to CT and have visited court houses in Tompkins, Cortland, Chenango and Otsego counties. I bypassed the Cayuga courthouse in Auburn as it was out of the way and I already had the text of a letter from the Cayuga County Historian written in 1985 that listed the Liber N & P references for my Christopher MAIN's land holdings between March and December of 1813. My Eldred ended his 1985 letter with "We find no further mention of him." I have no compulsion to invest time and money to get copies of the actual documents. I've had fellow researchers share documents with me and I've shared them with anyone with web access who can find them via Google or however. http://homepage.mac.com/mmmain/c_main1774/ has most of what is now known and more will be added as it is found. VERY WELL SAID, Bill. Thank you and good luck with the "powers that be." My first genealogy trip East was in 2000 was wonderful and whetted my appetite to return with more time. My wife and I made it back in 2003 but again had time constraints and the additional problems of traveling with a wheel chair due to her 2002 stroke. Thank GOD for handicapped parking spots. 3. Maybe I should also ask the question: How many out there DO NOT travel to Cayuga County, the County Offices, or to Museums here because "everything" is on the web? and while I am asking How many would rather see images on the web in enlarged formats rather than small, one size images in a book ? I contend that there is a place for both and that there is no way the pictures will ever be published in a paper format so that people can see the enlarged images. Who is ever going to publish a 40-50 inch print of a picture ? The only way to see these "pictures-in-pictures", that huge web enlargement provide, is on the web. Thus; to not publish on the web is to keep from the public their heritage. The best way to see the detail in old maps and images is on the web through enlargements. 3. To All, The only reason I don't travel to the County Offices is because I live in Washington State and it's a little far for a "reasearch day<ggg>. We do plan a trip this fall to the Finger Lakes region and will be doing research but it will probably be the only one I make to the area. There is NOTHING like reasearch done in the area yourself but with all my lines there is no way I can hit every County Courthouse. You will find things that "the clerk" looking for you doesn't see, and the LDS films are not complete for all counties and areas. I am a Oregon Trail descendent and my ancestors came from one coast to the other with 3 or 4 stops of several years along the way in WI>IN>IL>IA>MI>SD. I will be asking for the list's help in pointing me towards the "best research" depositories in the Finger Lakes Area. IT looks beautiful and we are looking forward to our visit.
