    1. In memory of Dan
    2. Tim Stowell
    3. In correspondence with a close family friend of Dan and his wife, I was informed that his co-workers in Virginia are putting together a memory book for his wife. "if there is anything you or others that knew him would like to convey about Dan - a nice memory or funny story I can put it in the book. We are holding a small memorial service for him next Thursday and we'll give her the book then." Dan died of a massive heart attack. He was at work alone Friday afternoon, found by the director when he had not returned home. For those wondering what Dan looked like, a page showing him loving life - http://users.erols.com/weiskotten/maggie.html If you wish to contribute to this memory book, please send such to - tstowell@chattanooga.net - I'll then pass those along to the lady who is putting the book together. Please use a subject line - memory book for Dan, or some such so I can find it among my other mail. Unless you post directly to this list, such notes / information will remain private. Tim Stowell tstowell@chattanooga.net Please feel free to post this on any other list.

    3. Denise, if Mary was born in NY State: Try NYS Census every 5 years between the USA Federal Census every 10 years 1800, 1810, 1820, 1830 The later USA Census would have Pittsburgh, PA, USA. Here the Later Day Saints have local Family History Centers with many records and internet access. They have NYS Census and you could get the Pittsburgh, PA USA Census on Genealogy.com or Ancestry.com. You can try it free for 14 days. It may work for you on New York 1830. You do need to know what county they might have lived in - unless your family name is uncommon. These brave souls contributed to the development of the area of Victoria Aust. in which we are researching and as such they deserve to be recorded in its history. One of these people was Mary Louisa Devoe born New York. We know nothing about Mary except she was born in New York around 1826 (working back from age given on her death in 1870) and that she married George SCOTT born ??. In circa 1881/52 the couple were running a gambling saloon in Nevada City Cal. and in 1852 they came to Australia and had children, most died young. However in 1858, once son George Winfield SCOTT died and his birth place given was PITT. Now Pitt could mean a place in Victoria and it could mean perhaps Pittsburgh USA. He was aged 11. If 11 years he was born in the USA. If 11 days or months obviously born in Victoria. Perhaps more children were born in USA - I have the ship they travelled here on, but have not been able to access the shipping list itself to ascertain the number in the family who came here. We would dearly love to find something on Mary, to confirm where she was born and to whom. The ultimate would be to find a connection to the family. We are very happy to share the data we have found on the family with anyone who connects. Mary's name was once shown as DEVEAUX on official records but most times DEVOE. 1. Daniel Weiskotten - Madison County researcher / historian
    2. Tim Stowell
    3. The jist of this posted previously today on the Madison County list: >From the Richmond Times-Dispatch: Daniel Herman Weiskotten Daniel Herman Weiskotten of Richmond, 45, died unexpectedly on May 6, 2005. Dan was the acting director of the Chesterfield Historical Society. He was the son of Herman Gates Weiskotten Jr. and Kathryn Morrow Weiskotten. He is survived by his wife, Jennifer Ley Weiskotten. Dan was born in Syracuse, N.Y., and lived and worked in Upstate New York for most of his life. Dan received his bachelor's degree in anthropology and his master's degree in archaeology and public history from State University of New York at Albany, and worked as an archaeologist in New York State prior to moving to Richmond, Va. Dan also worked in Cazenovia at Lorenzo State Historic Site and served as the town's historian. Even after he moved to Virginia, he continued to share his knowledge of the history of Cazenovia and its past citizens through his website: rootsweb.com/~nyccazen/. He was a member of the New York State Archaeological Association, Chittenango Landing Canal Boat Museum, a member of the Mount Independence Coalition and a corresponding member of the New York Archaeological Council. His job in Chesterfield County allowed him to pursue his lifelong interest in history, archaeology and education. Dan also volunteered his time and talents to the Virginia Association of Museums and the Citie of Henricus. Dan was happiest exploring old cemeteries and rural byways with his dogs, and in the dirt, whether teaching children about archaeology or gardening. He was a skilled woodworker and was always in the middle of several projects in his historic Northside Richmond home. In addition to his wife, Dan is survived by an aunt, four brothers, a sister and several nieces and nephews. A private committal service will be held in Cazenovia, New York, and a memorial reception will be held at Magnolia Grange later in the month. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Chesterfield Historical Society. 3. Bill Hello Yesterday was the first time I 'viewed' one or two(!) of ur pics. Beautiful beautiful..... I was born devoid of a working left hip. At the age of seven, 1958, I was introduced to Charles R. Pyke MD of Oswego NY. He completed three surgeries. He also, on at least three occasions took me flying in his private plane. I have the visuals safely tucked in my heart as well as my brain. I cherish those views. I suspected I'd never see them again.... Did I? Indeed, I did, yesterday! 3. Thanks for the offer. I would appreciate the pictures. I found it interesting that so many people traveled to that area from Central NY but I guess it was the western migration. My ancestors stayed in that area. Thanks again. 2. Nancy: The attraction to Nunda for my Walsh ancestor and wife, newly married in 1845, was apparently the canal which was being built at the time and, later, the railroad, as sources of employment. MFR

    3. I read with interest the postings on this site. Just a comment---I have read a few in which the ancestor has gone to Nunda or that area from Cayuga County, as did my DeGroff ancestor. Does anyone have an idea what attracted them to that area? 4th great-grandfather, Abraham DeGroff was born in Owasco in 1810, then at about 20 years of age went to Nunda where he taught school for a couple of years, then farmed there. According to the Supervisor's Report of 1830, Nunda had a population fo 1291 persons. In a centennial report, 1808-1908, it speaks of "longevity in Nunda" and specifically mentions Abraham DeGroff at age 90 in 1900, the year he died. Just curious. Nancy Hansen
