Out of curiosity, I checked censuses from 1840 to 1930. Mr. Girnee and his parents seem to have assiduously avoided census enumerators from 1840 to 1930, except for 1920, elderly,and 1880, unmarried. (Emma was with her sister in 1880. John a farm laborer in Jackson?) Have you tried locating marriage records, which usually ask the identity of parents? dlm

My g-grandfather, John Riley Gurnee, was born somewhere in New York State abt. 1845, possibly the Finger Lakes region, but that too is uncertain. John moved as a young man to Michigan, married Emma J. Newton in Eaton County, Michigan, had his family in Michigan, and died in Michigan. None of our family knows who his parents were.
