One of the first genealogy software programs, it has remained a DOS program since its inception. Here is the press release announcing the release of PAF 4.0 for Windows. SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH - Beginning Monday morning June 28 -- just five weeks after the launch of its top-rated new Internet genealogy service -- The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is offering free downloads of Personal Ancestral File® 4.0, a new Windows-based version of its popular genealogical management program for home computers. The new software program is available free of charge via the Internet at www.familysearch.org. PAF 4.0 does not provide genealogical data. Instead, the program helps users organize their family history records. It can produce, in automated or manual form, records for personal family histories or charts and logs to help users in their search for missing ancestors. It also includes new multimedia features and enhances the more popular features of PAF 3.0. System Requirements: -- Windows 95/98/NT version -- IBM compatible 486/66 processor (Pentium recommended) -- 16-32 MB memory -- 20MB hard disk space -- 256-color display adapter supporting 640x480 screen resolution (but optimized for 800x600) -- Internet access (if downloading from Internet) -- CD-ROM (not available until sometime in early 2000) Personal Ancestral File 4.0 will also be available on CD ROM for a nominal price in early 2000. Searching for your ancestors? The Federal Census records may have the answers you¹re looking for! I will search the Soundex (the index to the Census) for your ancestors in the 1880, 1900, 1910 or 1920 Federal Census for *ANY* state. (Note that the 1910 Soundex is only available for the following 21 states: AL, AR, CA, FL, GA, IL, KS, KY, LA, MI, MS, MO, NC, OH, OK, PA, SC, TN, TX, VA, and WV. The 1880 Soundex only includes families with children age 10 and under. No records are available for 1890.) You will receive a form which includes all of the information found for your ancestor in the Soundex. In addition to the family's place of residence, the following information will be listed for each family member: name, age, month and year of birth (1900 Soundex only), birthplace (state or country), relationship to head of household, and citizenship. Simply provide the following information (numbered as below) for each search: 1. Census year (1880, 1900, 1910 or 1920). 2. State to search (include county or town, if known). 3. Soundex code for surname (see below). 4. Name of head of household (include state or country of birth and date of birth, if known). 5. Name of spouse (include state or country of birth, and date of birth, if known). 6. Names of children or other family members expected in the household (include state or country of birth and dates of birth for each, if known). Please provide full names, if possible, as individuals are often listed by initials or middle names. The birth information is important too, as it will help to identify the correct family. If you do not know the Soundex code for the surname, use the conversion program at this site: http://events.genealogy.org/soundex.html The fees for searches are as follows: 1: $2.50; 2 to 3: $5.00; 4 to 6: $10.00; 7 or more: please inquire for price. (Note: each Census year counts as one search, even if for the same head of household.) Mail your request, including all 6 items required above and payment (check or money order made payable to K. O¹Brien), to: K. O¹Brien 12728 W. 108th St. Overland Park, KS 66210-1106 Please include a self-addressed, stamped envelope (letter size) with your order.
