The Las Vegas Review Journal has obits online for newspaper issues from Jan 15, 1997 to current. Their address is http://www.lvrj.com Go to the center of that first screen for Archives and click on that. Then follow the screen for the year you want, then the date. When you get to the next screen, in the first section, there will appear the words "deaths". Just click on that and it will give you a listing of the obits...word of warning, they are NOT always in alpha order, so scroll thru each one. Use your back arrow to get back to the calendar and proceed to the next issue, remembering that it may take several weeks for the obit to be placed, or appear in the listing, so search EACH day. Good Luck in your search.

Posted on: Clark County, Nv Query Forum Board URL: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Nv/Clark?read=150 Surname: ------------------------- Greg, According to the NVUSGENWEB Archives, Hugh Lord is buried in Overton, Nevada at the St. Thomas Cemetery. He was buried there in 1947. It says he was the "last person to leave as Lake Mead was rising." To check this out go to www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/ussearch.htm and put in his name and state. It will be listed under the search results for St. Thomas Cemetery, Overton, Clark Co. Rosemary should be able to find an obit for you with this info! I think you'll find the following of interest: Source: An Enduring Legacy, Volume Three Locality Histories St. Thomas, Clark County, Nevada The Union Pacific Branch line was built down the valley later, with St. Thomas as the terminus, and between 1910 and 1918 it was a busy frontier town. World War I had skyrocketed the price of copper and with some one thousand head of rolling stock on the freight road between St. Thomas and Grand Gulch mine, things were real lively. About this time the Arrowhead Trail built through the Valley of Fire came out at St. Thomas. Many tourists made it a stopping point, putting up at the Gentry Hotel or resting in the shade of a grove of giant cottonwoods planted by the pioneers of the sixties. A little later, reclamation engineers began drilling at Boulder Canyon, using St. Thomas as a supply base. It was later decided to build Boulder Dam at Black Canyon and work was started on this great project. This meant that the government would have to buy all of St. Thomas because storage waters would eventually cover it. The people of St. Thomas were forced to move for the last time. Some went to Logandale, others to Las Vegas, Alamo and other points. All left but Hugh Lord and Rex Whitmore, and Rex’s son Leland. They still stayed on, but not alone for sentimental reasons. Hugh owned a garage which was well equipped with tools. He was a very able and conscientious mechanic and having only himself to be responsible for, stayed on to take care of the work that came to him from up the valley. He chose to stay, work when he chose, and fish as the mood struck him. Rex, with his choice of all the rich farming land of St. Thomas, an ample supply of water and no taxes to pay, could raise good crops of grain and other food including cattle, hogs, and turkeys. Now there were no neighbors to complain of stock trespassing on private property. These men had been notified more than once to move as they were on government property, but they still stayed on—prepared to move before the lake got up to their homes. Good Luck! Doreen

    3. Posted on: Clark County, Nv Query Forum Board URL: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Nv/Clark?read=149 Surname: LORD ------------------------- Greg: I live in Las Vegas...Lake Mead was the "by-product" of the Hoover Dam...before that it was the Colorado River. There was no lake. Yes, you are correct, there is a town buried, when they built the dam to slow the flow of water, and to generate power. When the lake is very low, there was a church steeple that could be seen. My husband tells me that it has since fallen. Since I have lived here from 1976, we have seen this steeple once. My husband has lived here since 1953, and has told me of this "town", but cannot recollect the name. I can imagine the people would of had to move out, or live under 30 feet or so of water. Is there anyway you can zero in on a date...month and year. I have access to the Las Vegas Review Journal and have checked for articles and obits back to the 1920's, when they referred to the Hoover Dam as the "colorado river project". I am sure that there will be an article about this. My husband just came thru and said the Lake Mead Recreational Area, is a "National Park", as they are now charging a fee to access the services and water. We may be able to find some information about that on the Internet. Let me also make a few calls to Boulder City, where the local Hoover Dam Museum is and maybe they can pinpoint the date for me. I love a challenge. God Bless Rosemary

All I had was his birth information: Hugh Lord, b. Jul 20, 1880, Valley Falls, KS. I found him listed on a "WWI Civilian Draft Registrations": Hugh Lucian Lord, b. Jul 20, 1880, White, lives Valley Falls KS. Reg: Clark Co. Nevada.) I'm told there was a Hugh Lord that lived in St. Thomas, Clark Co. Nevada. After they built the Hover Dam, it caused Lake Mead to rise and submerge all of the local property and homes. It forced the local people living there to move out. I'm told Hugh Lord was the last one to leave. Is there any way to find out about this? I hope tom find if he had family and where he died. I thank you very much, Greg
