Posted on: Clark Co. Nv Obituaries Reply Here: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/gc/USA/Nv/ClarkObits/25 Surname: WHEATLEY, BUCKLEY ------------------------- "Death Claims John Wheatley", Searchlight Bulletin, Friday, July 2, 1909: Leading Citizen Answers Last Summons Deceased had played an important part with noted leaders in development of many of the mines of Nevada. Wednesday evening just as the sun was slowly sinking beyond the distant hills - those brown somber Nevada hills he loved so well - all that was earthly of John WHEATLEY, one of Searchlight's oldest and most respected citizens was laid to rest in the little burying ground at the edge of camp. In failing health for a year or more, merciful death closed his tired eyes and brought peace to his tortured body Tuesday afternoon, June 29, 1909, at three o'clock. In death his face was lit with a smile of perfect peace as if in that transitory moment when his soul stood poised for flight, he had signaled back to comfort the grief stricken family around his bedside, that all was well - that he was with them who would indeed understand. John Wheatley was born in a little village of Oroca, County of Wicklow, Ireland, in 1848, making him at the time of his death 61 years of age. He settled in Nevada right after the close of the Civil War and ever after claimed the Sage Brush State as his home. At Virginia City, Pioche, Delamar, Searchlight he had charge of many leading properties. Positions of trust were ever his, and during his lifetime he enjoyed the friendship of such Nevadans as Senator Stewart and Newlands, Judge Talbot and a host of other noted men. Inherent rugged honesty was the keystone of his character. In 1898, Mr. Wheatley settled in Searchlight, becoming foreman of the Boston, then the principal property of the Quartette Mining Co. However, he soon retired from active mining and opened up a general store and hotel. The honor and respect in which he was held here in Searchlight was shown from the fact that he was the first Justice of the Peace, and afterwards it's Assistant Postmaster, member of the school board and of the city council. A member of Searchlight Lodge #31, Free and Accepted Maasons, the burial was conducted by that body from which a sacred duet was sung by Mrs. C. F. Perkins and Miss Dora Boylye. The floral coffin rugs were many and beautiful, one of the most striking being the Masonic Square and Compass. The funeral procession was the largest and most representative in the history of Searchlight. At the grave the impressive services concluded with Worshipful Master Lund eulogizing the departed brother to the tender care of the Great master on High. Besides the widow, the deceased leaves three daughters, Sarah, Carrie and Mrs. Maude Buckley; a son John; three sisters and four brothers, one brother residing at Pioche, another in Idaho, and the other two with the sisters in Ireland. CARD OF THANKS We wish to express our heartfelt thanks to our many friends for their timely aid and loving conciliation in the hour of our bereavement. Posted on: Clark Co. Nv Obituaries Reply Here: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/gc/USA/Nv/ClarkObits/19 Surname: LEWIS ------------------------- "A Sudden Death", Searchlight Bulletin 1903 While eating lunch in his place of business last Thursday evening, N. S. LEWIS rolled from his chair to the floor. Friends hastened to his assistance but it was found that death, which was the result of a stroke of Apoplexy, had been instantaneous. "Uncle Nat" as he was familiarly known was seventy-three years of age, having been born in Indianapolis, Indiana on March 1st, 1830. Over forty years ago he discovered and located the Wall Street group of mines at Eldorado. For years he has been actively engaged in mining and it was only about a year ago that he settled down in business here in Searchlight. Probably no man in this country enjoyed a wider acquaintance, and his acquaintances were his friends. The internment took place here in Searchlight on last Saturday.
