Merz) Article Text: Hawthorne, 15 Jan - Leonard C. MERZ, postmaster and store keeper at Nolan, on the Eastern shore of Walker Lake, was struck by the Southbound Southern Pacific train Friday (12 Jan) and died at the Mineral County Hospital in Hawthorne the same day. Mr. MERZ evidently tried to cross the railroad track just ahead of the train as it was coming to a stop at the station and was struck by the crossbar of the pilot and thrown under the station platform. He was placed on the train and taken to Thorne, where he was met by the Naval Ammunition Depot ambulance which rushed him to the hospital here, where he died, without regaining consciousness. The deceased was a resident of this state for 35-40 years and was 73 years of age at the time of his death. He was engaged in businees in the camp of Rawhide during the boom days and then went to Rochester where he engaged in business for some time before returning to Nolan where he had mining interests and also the afore mentioned postal and store business. He is survived by 2 daughters, Mrs. Elsie CAMPBELL of Hawthonre and Mrs. Anna WRIGHT of Marysville, CA. Interment will be in the Hawthorne Cemetery. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ NV-Old-News ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ NewspaperAbstracts.com - Finding our ancestors in the news! TM http://www.NewspaperAbstracts.com
