RYAN, who was ordained as one of the early priests of the Diocese of Reno more than 40 years ago, was found dead on a desolate Las Vegas road Wednesday morning (21 Feb). Monsignor RYAN, 74, had apparently been driving on the road on the outskirts of Las Vegas, when his car got stuck. Suffering from emphysema, he apparently tried to walk to a more populated area and was found about a half mile from his car, police said. A native of Ballymore County, Westmeath, Ireland, Monsignor RYAN was born 23 Apr 1898, the son of John RYAN and Mary ROONEY. He was educated at St. Patrick's College, Carlow, Ireland and Saint Bonaventure Seminary in New York. IN his 35 years of active service in the priesthood, Monsignor RYAN served thorughout Nevada until his retirement in 1968. Ordained 3 Jan 1933 in BUffalo, New York for the Diocese if Reno, he served first as assistant pastor of Sacred Heart Parish in Ely, St. Theresa Parish in Carson City and St .Thomas Aquainas Cathedral in Reno. He was named pastor of Our Lady of Snows Parish in Reno in 1939 and under his direction the present church and rectory were built. His other pastorates were in Ely, St. Andrews i Boulder City, St. Gall in Gardnerville and St. Albert's in Reno. In 1952 he was named pastor of St. Anne's parish in Las Vegas ans was responsible for construction of St. Anne school and a convent for the teaching sisters. At that time Mass was celebrated in the structure currently used as the parish hall. After his service at St. Anne he was assigned to St. Brendan in Carlin. From there he went to St. Patrick's in Fallon where he retired in 1968. Monsignor RYAN is survived by two nephews, Matt KEARNEY of Reno and John LEARNEY of Pasadena, CA. The Rosary was recited Thursday (22 Feb) at St. Anne's in Las Vegas. A funeral service was to take place today at St. Anne's. A memorial Mass will be celebrated at Our Lady of Snows Church in Reno at 7:30 p.m. on Monday (26 Feb).
