Her death resulted from an attack of influenza, which she contracted a couple of months ago. She has been in a critical condition for the past three weeks but had fought death with a determined spirit with the hopes of again seeing her son, John A. McCARTHY, who is with Uncle Sam'S fighting forces on the Atlantic Coast, but death conquered her spirit before his arrival which was delayed by the Army red tape. Mrs. McCARTHY had resided in Hawthorne over 30 years and has been active in the social and public welfare of the town. She was well known all over the state as an active club worker. Before her marriage she lived in Virginia City and taught school there as Adelaide HOLMES. Three children survive her; Mrs. Rita D. MILAR, Miss Ruth McCARTHY and John McCARTHY, all of Hawthorne. Besides her husband A.J. McCARTHY, a sister Mrs. John McLAUHLAN survives. Mrs. McCARTHY was sixty years old. The funeral was held Thursday (3 Apr) and was largely attended, a number being in attendance from Mina. The remains were laid to rest in the Hawthorne Cemetery.
