Van VALIN of Hawthorne tells the following story about Hopsuit (John Siri) an old Italian who was a wonderful miner. He was a habitual card player but one day he was losing in a stud poker game and decided todestroy the deck of cards. Being a giant in strength, he placed the cards between the thumb and fingers of each hand and tore them squarely across through the middle. Then he fell to his knees, spit out his strong briar pipe and asked aid from his creator, but as nothing happened he whirled chairs and tables from his path and left the saloon. Ocasionally, when I visited the Hawthorne Cemetery, I take a few pieces of gold quartz to place on his grave instead of flowers. Hop Suit once sold me some gold he had mined years ago in Bodie, CA. He went down under the floor of his cabin for the precious metal. I paid him $25.00 for the amount of gold he removed from an old purse, and he said that there was plenty more under the dirt. He told me he covered over veins of high grade ore when he worked in Bodie, because the company would not grant him a lease, and never devulged where they were located. He often tried to get me to go to Bodie so that he could show me the spot but he died before we could arrange the trip. I often regretted that I refrained from making the journey when he proposed it. The mine where he said the gold was hidden by him is closed down and the location of the yellow metal will always remain a lost mine mystery. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ NV-Old-News ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ NewspaperAbstracts.com - Finding our ancestors in the news!
