Mar 8, The Sierra Pacific Power Company aske all Western Nevada industries to reduce power consumption by 20 percent. Reno school district voters approved a 2,500,000 issue of bonds for a new high school and elected Gordon THOMPSON a school trustee. Mar 11, Nevada's oldest business, in operation since Sep 1, 1862, The Carson Brewing Company, quit production. Mar 14, Daylight savings time became effective for the Reno - Sparks area. Elko defeated White Pine 41 to 26 to win the state high school basketball championship. Reno's Army Air Base was named as the permanant home of the Nevada Air Guard. Mar 18, A jury in the Washoe District Court found Owen C. BUTNER guilty of slaying his ex-wife and fixed the penalty as death. Mar 21, Big crowds turned out to pass through the Freedom Train. Mar 22, Final arrangements were made for the state to take over the BMI plant April first. H.W. EDWARDS of Reno was elected president of the Nevada State Bar. The city council adopted a $2,097,732.32 budget for 1948 fixing the city tax rate at $1.75. Mar 23, Mrs. Richard MORNING, youthful wife of a minister was brutally attacked and slain in her Wells home. Mar 25, Sen. George W. MALONE suggested securing Shasta Dam power to alleviate Western Nevada's power shortage. Mar 26, Laszlo VARGA, pocked marked Hungarian refugee, was arrested in Petaluma, CA for the return to Elko for the murder of Mrs. Richard MORNING. Mar 27, Saviers Electrical Products Company sold its retail business to Joseph MOORE and Milo TALLY. Claude SAVIERS announced the firm would handle only the wholesale distributing market. The buyers of the retail store organized the firm of Moore-Tally, Inc.
