Born 31 Aug 1888 in San Jose, CA, GRUWELL was a former Elko County rancher. He moved to Hawthorne in 1928 and worked at the Naval Ammunition Depot there until retirement in 1950. Surviving are his widow Hannah of Hawthorne; three sons, Richard of San Diego, Melvin Lee and JOseph Jr., both of Hawthorne; seven grandchildren and one great grandchild. Mr. GRUWELL was the last of nine brothers born to Samuel GRUWELL and Elizabeth BRITTAIN. He came to the United States when he was 22, about 1887 and was naturalized in 1899 in San Bernardino, CA. One year after arriving in the states Mr. FITTING enlisted in the U.S. NAVY and remained with the Navy until 1892. He served on the St Louis, Vermont, Boston, Constellation, Philadelphia and the Franklin, all which were the pride of the U.S. NAvy 50 years ago. Sometime after that he became a miner. He never married and on 6 Nov 1937 at the age of 73 Mr. FITTING passed away in Hawthorne. His remains were buried in that towns cemetery. When but a child the family moved to Goldfield, Nevada. From there they moved to Colorado and in 1919 removed back to Nevada. Besides Goldfield, they had also lived in Battle Mountain, Nevada. In 1932 she came to Hawthorne and in 1938 she was united in marriage to Albert CURTIS. Mrs. CURTIS was a member of the Ladies Auxilary, VFW, Woodcraft Lodge and the Rebekah's. She died in Hawthorne 31 Oct 1948. (details are graphic, if anyone wants them contact me) The origin of the fire may never be known. Mrs. BORQUEZ had been an invalid for many years and couldn't do things for herself, Mr. BORQUEZ was in the habit of assisting her. It is believed that Mr. BORQUEZ had gotten up to assist Mrs. BORQUEZ and while carryin ga light fell against the stove, knocked himself out dropping the light and catching the house on fire. Mrs. BORQUEZ was over 100 years old and Miguel BORQUEZ was about 80. "Hank" Barlow Has Died Article Text: Holman F. "Hank" BARLOW, 81, a resident of Hawthorne since 1929, died Saturday (19 Oct) at the home of his daughter in Carson City. Mr. BARLOW was a native of Nevada, born in the town of Mason in Mason Valley 21 May 1911 to Arthur H. BARLOW and Adelle BUCKING BARLOW. As a child he lived both in Mason and in Reno, attending schools in both places. In the 1920.s Mr. BARLOW returned to Lyon County, working in the Thompson Copper Smelter at Wabuska until he removed to Hawthorne in 1929 to work at the Naval Ammunition Depot as a plumbers helper. When the Depot was formally commissioned, Mr. BARLOW was one of its first civil service employees, taking a job in the plumbing shop. A few years later he took a job as a night janitor so that he could attend Mineral County High School, graduating in 1936. Mr. BARLOW was active in our community including being chairman of the March of Dimes. After his retirment his main focus was on BARLOW'S Dutch Creek Ranch about 12 miles North of Hawthorne on the West shores of Walker Lake. The property had been acquired by his father in 1929. Surviving are his widow, Catherine BARLOW of Hawthorne, daughter, Jessica DANIELS of Carson City, one brother, Lee BARLOW of Hawthorne, two sisters, Helen BARKLEY of Paradise, CA and Winifred ELMORE of Reno, one granddaughter, Alicia DANIELS of Carson City, numerous neices and nephews. In later years he was confined to his home.
