He had been ill for some time with pneumonia. Deceased was 57 years of age and had been a resident of Mineral County for 25 years. He was a native of Montenegro. Coming to this country in 1905, he traveled extensively, reaching Tonopah in 1911. That same year he came to Mineral County and settled in Cottonwood Canyon where he had worked in the developement of a mine for close to a quarter of a century. In April 1934, he enrolled in CCC camp here and was in that service when taken by death. MILICH was joined by his brother, George, in the developement of the Cottonwood mine in 1912 and together they worked until two years ago when Mike enrolled in the CCC. Both were experienced in mining. Mike holding an engineers degree from the college he attended in the old country. He had also served as an Army officer in his native land. Surviving besides his brother living in Hawthorne, are the widow of deceased, two sons, a daughter and four grandchildren. Funeral arrangements have not been completed but it is probable services will be held here Saturday (21 Mar). METZ Dies At Hospital Here Article Text: J. METZ, a local watchmaker and jeweler, at Mineral County Hospital at nine o'clock Thursday night (23 Jan) following a brief attack of double pneumonia. The deceased had been ill only two days when friends found him Thursday afternoon in his cabin near the Lodi Hotel. According to intimate friends, METZ was 63 years of age and was born in Los Angeles. He had lived in Nevada for a number of years and since coming to Hawthorne had gained a wide acquaintance. Merz) Article Text: Hawthorne, 15 Jan - Leonard C. MERZ, postmaster and store keeper at Nolan, on the Eastern shore of Walker Lake, was struck by the Southbound Southern Pacific train Friday (12 Jan) and died at the Mineral County Hospital in Hawthorne the same day. Mr. MERZ evidently tried to cross the railroad track just ahead of the train as it was coming to a stop at the station and was struck by the crossbar of the pilot and thrown under the station platform. He was placed on the train and taken to Thorne, where he was met by the Naval Ammunition Depot ambulance which rushed him to the hospital here, where he died, without regaining consciousness. The deceased was a resident of this state for 35-40 years and was 73 years of age at the time of his death. He was engaged in businees in the camp of Rawhide during the boom days and then went to Rochester where he engaged in business for some time before returning to Nolan where he had mining interests and also the afore mentioned postal and store business. He is survived by 2 daughters, Mrs. Elsie CAMPBELL of Hawthonre and Mrs. Anna WRIGHT of Marysville, CA. Merchant Of Hawthorne Taken By Death Article Text: Hawthorne- William F. MERCHANT, a resident of Hawthorne for more than a quarter of a century died early Saturday morning (6 Feb) following a prolonged illness. Mr. MERCHANT was 72 years of age at the time of his death. Born in Walla Walla, Washington, Mr. MERCHANT spent his early life in the Northwest and as a young man served as a purser on a steamship line operating between Seattle and Juneau, Alaska. He engaged in mining and business in Alaska for several years, moving from there to Tonopah in 1919 where he purchased part interest i na grocery store. During the 1920's Mr. MERCHANT engaged in numerous mining developement projects in many of the mining boomtowns of Nevada, receiving the nickname of "Townsite Bill." In 1928 he moved to Hawthorne and opened a real estate and insurance office, continuing that business until ill health forced his retirement a year ago. During his working days he was also sub-agent for Ford automobiles in Hawthorne and a special correspondent to the Reno Evening Gazette. Mr. MERCHANT served the greater part of WWII as a member of the Selective Service Board for Mineral County. He was a charter member of the Masonic Lodge in Juneau and when Hawthorne Lodge #36 F. & A.M. was organized n 1930 Mr. MERCHANT became a charter member and was its first Senior Warden. Funeral services were conducted in Hawthorne Tuesday afternoon (9 Feb) by the Masonic Lodge and burial was in the Hawthorne Cemetery. Mr. MERCHANT is survived by one son, William M. MERCHANT of Concord, CA, who formerly resided in Hawthorne, and two granddaughters, Mrs. A.L. Mrs. Mae Fletcher McMAHON, of Mina, a native of Nevada, was dead when the ambulance carrying her arrived at the Mineral County Hospital in Hawthorne a short time after the accident. According to the hospital attendants Mrs. Thomas STEVENS of Hawthorne broke her right arm and received a severe cut on the head in addition to bruises while Mrs. Lola ANDERSON of Hawthorne suffered a deep cut on her hand and other injuries. Thomas STEVENS, driver of the automobile and Virgil BUCHANAN also of Hawthorne were treated for minor cuts and bruises. According to the sheriff's offices investigating the accident, Mr. STEVENS apparently lost control of his Buick sedan on a straight stretch of road while traveling at what a witness called "a high rate of speed". The big automobile came to rest on its roof after skidding and turning over. It was believed that Mrs. McMAHON, a passenger in the back seat, was flung through an open door of the car as it went over. The ambulance was summoned from Hawthorne a few minutes after the accident by a passing motorist. Mrs. McMAHON, who was 66 years old was a resident of Nevada all of her life. She was born at Fletcher Station, 22 miles from Hawthorne over Lucky Boy pass. Her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Harry FLETCHER, for years maintained the halfway station at the ranch there for stage coaches running between Hawthorne, Aurora and Bodie. She lived in Yerington for many years and for awhile in California before settling in Mineral County in 1932. For the past ten years sge gas been a resident of Mina. She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Josie ROCKWELL of SAnta Barbara, CA, a son, Russell McMAHON of San Francisco, and a brother, Victor FLETCHER of Mina. McKEOUGH, veteran Nevada Peace Officer, who died in Hawthorne last Wednesday night (13 May) following an extended illness. The services were conducted by Esmeralda Lodge, Knights of Pythias, in the lodge hall and at the graveside, with Herman HOWARD, Gene FERRETTI and L.W. BERRUM in charge. Hymns were sung by the Pythian Sunshine Girls, accompanied by Miss Lorraine ROBINSON. Serving as pallbearers were Oscar GERBIG, Gene FERRETTI, Loyd WILSON, C.A. RITCHARDSON, Kames CAUGHMAN, Gut A. McINNIS and L.D. OAR. Surrounding the floral banked casket were scores of beautiful floral pieces. Relatives coming to Hawthorne to attend the services included Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth McKEOUGH of San Franciscowho are spending this week at the home of Mrs. Edna McKEOUGH, widow of Mr. McKEOUGH. Kenneth is the only son of the late Walter McKEOUGH. A. brother A.C. McKEOUGH if San Francisco was unable to attend the services. Others who were here were Mrs. A. MALO and Mrs. J.R. McInnis Is Lamented Article Text: Deepest grief and sorrow have enveloped all of Hawthprne, following the news of the death of Mrs. Guy A. McINNIS at Saint Mary's hospital in Reno early Tuesday morning (22 Oct). Mrs. McINNIS had been ailing for several weeks bearing bravely and minimizing her infirmity and on last Thursday her suffering had become so accute and her condition so alarming the Doctors D.A. SMITH and J.A. STREET were called in consultation and advised her removal to the hospital in Reno for surgical treatment. The trip to Reno waas undertaken on Sunday evening with two cars. Mr. McINNIS, Mrs. Kate McKENZIE, her mother, John ANDREWS and Joe COOK accompanying. Mrs. McINNIS bore the journey splendidly, it is stated and inspired highest hopes for an eraly recovery. On Monday, the children were motored to Reno by Mrs. John ANDREWS. Mrs. McINNIS, nee Anna T. McKENZIE, was a native of Bodie, CA, and was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John McKENZIE, pioneers of the Bodie gold rush. She was married to Guy A. McINNIS at Bodie, and is survived by her husband, Mrs. Kate McKENZIE, her mother, a sister Mrs. Will BEEL of Oakland, CA; three brothers, John and William McKENZIE of Oakland, CA and Marvin McKENZIE of Manhattan, NV; five children Kathleen, Roderick, Aileen, Donald and Mervyn. While devoted to her home and family ties, Mrs. McINNIS was never insensible to the pleasures and enjoyments of outside life and by her active participation in and attention to social amenities, has won fer herself and family a high community esteem. The remains were brought to Hawthorne Tuesday night, accompanied by the family. Mrs. McINNIS' sister from Oakland and her brothers John and Marvyn, who had been summoned to her bedside. Miller) Article Text: Fatalities attributable to the mining industry now total three for the present year with the death 10 Feb in Aurora of James R. MILLER, 35. MILLER, married with two small children was killed instantly while he and a companion were working in the crushing room in the Chesco Mill in the tiny Mineral County community. His death occured as he was caught in an elevator used to transport crushed ore from the primary crusher from the lower floor of the mill to the fine ore bin on the upper floor. Leonard TRAYNOR, Deputy mine inspector in Tonopah, inspected the mishap. In a report filed with A.E. BERNARD, state mine inspector, he said that MILLER'S body had been caught in the elevator mechanism and that a bucket on the elevator struck him on the head. Chesco Mill is operated by Chesshen and Company. MILLER'S death was termed a mill fatality. The two other mining death have been called surface fatalities. As yet none have lost their lives in underground accidents this year. The three deaths in the first two months of this year are as many as were recorded during the 12 months or 1949. The first occurred 8 Jan at Getchell Mine when Lionell HANSEN, 24, truck driver was electrocuted in a freak accident. She married first Mr. Henry BOERLIN 11 Sep 1907, married second Guy A. McINNIS in 1947. Mrs. McINNIS has been a resident of Hawthorne for 40 years and a fifty year member of both Pythian Sisters and the Rebekah's. Mr. McINNIS died 22 Aug 1960. She is survived by 2 sons; H. Elwood BOERLIN of Sacramento and Alvin E. BOERLIN of El Cerrito, CA; sister, Mrs. Leo W. OSBORN of Yerington; six grandchildren, Mrs. Curtis PAGET of Marysville, CA, Bruce BOERLIN of Sacramento, Howard E. She had been in ill health for some time past and had been a resident of Luning for the past twenty years coming from Canada where she was born. The deceased had a charitable disposition and when in her power was always aiding the needy and the sick and will always be remembered by the old timers of Luning. Death was due to a paralytic stroke and the end came suddenly even though McDONALD had been at the hospital for almost a year. For three days prior to his death he had not been feeling quite as well as usual but showed no signs of being seriously ill. Sunday morning he ate no breakfast and only a light lunch around noon time. He passed the afternoon by sitting on the hospital porch and went to his room about five o'clock in the evening. Shortly after he reached there a heavy thud was heard be the matron and others who rushed to his room and found him lying on the floor. He was placed in bed and only then was it noticed that his intire right side was paralyzed. Medicine was given to him but he continued to grow weaker and the end came about 7:30 in the evening. McDONALD was about 71 years of age. He was brought to the hospital from Mina about a year ago suffering with rheumatism. He had resided at Mina for many years and at one time had seved as night watchman for the town. He was well known throughout the entire county and was held in the highest esteem by all of his associates, who were grieved to learn of his sudden passing. Funeral services were held at the local cemetery Monday afternoon. Sam KELSO delivered the eulogyat the final services and a trie consisting of Mr. Walter McKEOUGH, Cal T. WHITNEY and Frank WEAVER sang a number of hymns. Those acting as pallbearers were Mike DONDERO, Joe MARSHALL, Harry McKAY, and Cal WHITNEY.
