McGinnis Article Text: Leslie C. McGINNIS died Thursday (22 Feb) at his home. He was 75. He was born 29 Dec 1887 in Curlew, Iowa. He came to Hawthorne in 1942 to work at the Naval Ammunition Depot, he retired in 1957. He then worked as a custodian for the Mineral County School District until 1969. H e was the Senior Warden of the St. Phillip's Episcopal Church here, past Noble Grand of the Oddfellows Lodge of Hawthorne and a charter member of the Naval Depot's Employes Benefit Association. Survivors include his widow Minnie; sons. Verne of Napa, CA and Lyle of Medford, OR; 5 granddaughters and 1 great granddaughter; brother, Cecil of Algona, IA and sister, Nellie STEPHENSON of Madrid, IA. A funeral is scheduled at 2:00 p.m. Sunday (25 Feb) in Hawthorne Funeral Home. His condition was known to be serious, but it was hoped that his rugged constitution would withstand the trial, but such was not to be. At about 11:00 he breathed his last, surrounded by his relatives. Monroe MILLER is well known in this section , having been engaged in mining hereabout for many years. Besides a devoted and heartbroken wife, he leaves to mourn his death, his mother, Mrs. CRUTCHER; two sisters, Mrs. J.E. ADAMS and Mrs. Fred BARNES; two brothers John Harvey MILLER and Alvey MILLER. The death of Monroe MILLER has cast a gloom over the town as he was held in high esteem by all. He was a member in good standing of Lakeview Lodge # 17 A.O.U.W. in which order he was insured for $2,000. He was a native of Iowa, aged 39 years. Law making activities in Carson were suspended for the day to allow legislators to attend the services. A profusion of flowers, many of them from friends and associates unable to be present, decorated yhe casket and chapel. Services here this afternoon were under the direction of Reno Lodge # 597, BPOE with T.L.WITHERS acting exalted ruler and the Rev. F.C. MURGOTTEN as Chaplain. Honorary pallbearers from the state legislature, of which Senator MILLER was one of the veterans in point of service, included Senators Aaron V. TALLMAN, Walter COX, James A. WADSWORTH, Leslie KOFOED, H.C. HEIDTMAN, Will COBB, Ralph LATTIN, H.A. MODARELLI, Charles RUSSEL, Archie GRANT, Assemblyman William CASHILL, Hayes DONNELLY and C.C. BOAK. Active pallbearers were Leiut. Governor Maurice SULLIVAN, Senators William DRESSLER, Ira WINTERS, John E, ROBBINS, Harry DEVOTIE and C.F. WITTENBERG. Music for the services was provided by Mrs. Lula GRIMMER, organist while the duet of L.E. LAYMAN and Mrs. Marguerite WEST sang "End of a perfect day" and "Someday we'll understand." Committal services will be held at the Hawthorne Cemetery at 5:00 this afternoon under the Esmeralda Lodge Knights of Pythias. MILLER (Jr.), son of a pioneer Hawthorne resident. Mr. MILLER died Monday 2 Oct) in a Reno hospital. He had been under treatment for a heart ailment. He was 66. Rev. Charles POOLE of St. Philip's Episcopal Church in Hawthorne officiated. Organist was Katherine MAYFIELD. Pallbearers were Vearl SEEVERS, Farrell SEEVERS, Otto GERBIG, Arthur NELSON all of Hawthorne and Fay BAKER and Irving NIXON both of Reno. Mr. MILLER is survived by a sister, Mrs. Neva FERRETTI of Hawthorne. He was born in Hawthorne and was the only son of Alvey C. MILLER Sr. who, together with his brother, Senator John H. MILLER, was a prominent leader in the developement of Hawthorne and the creation of Mineral County in 1911. Their mother, Mrs. Marie CRUTCHER arrived in Hawthorne before the town was officially established. Mr. MILLER attended the University of Nevada and served in Europe during WWI. He entered government service in California at the end of the war and retired after WWII to return to Hawthorne.
