Smith Has Answered Last Call Passed Away This Mornig At St. George's Hospital After Illness Of One Week Article Text: George S. SMITH, one of the pioneers of Washoe County and one of its best known and highly respected residents died this morning at 10:50 at St. George's Hospital. The deceased was a native of England and was 72 years old. He came to this country 58 years ago and shortly after removed to Nevada, setteling at Washoe City which was the seat of government for Washoe County in the early days. He was engaged in the mercantile business for many years and also cultivated a large farm in Pleasant Valley. Two brothers and three sisters survive him; James and L.D. SMITH of Washoe, Mrs. MOONEY of Virginia City and two sisters in Utah. There are two daughters and a son left to mourn their loss. They are Ella M. SMITH, Mrs. F.J. SAUER and David C. SMITH all of Washoe. The deceased was a member of Reno Lodge # 14 I.O.O.F. He had been ill only a few days. Death was due to peritonitis, caused by gall stones. The body is at the mortuary parlors of the Perkins-Gulling Company. As years passed and he became infirm, his mind failed and he was taken to the asylum in this city. For many years he has been a patient inmate of the institution. At all times he was contented and did not complain of his lot. For some time past the old gentleman was gradually failing in health and Sunday the end came. He passed away calmly as if going to sleep. The remains were brought to Reno and taken to Perkins and Oliver's parlors. The body will be shipped to Franktown today and the funeral will be Wednesday afternoon (30 Dec).
