But no one can correctly assert what "Badger Bill" would say were he to have risen and viewed the most modern thing in automobile construction - the Airflow Machine - on the day the accompaning photograph was made. (Note I have not included the photo in this article) Briefly the history of "Badger Bill" is this. He was William LaRue, a Civil War veteran who came west soon after that great conflict. A wonderful physique was his and it stood him well in his occupation of blacksmithing at the Pamlico mines, 16 miles southeast of Hawthorne. Walking was his favorite mode of transportation an often he walked the 20 mile distance to Camp Douglas to visit friends. Returning from one of these trips one day in 1899 however, he became exhausted, having no water and dropped beside the old wagon road at a spot about four miles distance from Pamlico, his destination. There he died, and there he was buried, in accordence with a wish often expressed by the old character. A few years ago the Veterans of Foriegn Wars post in Hawthorne honored the departed comrade by erecting a fence on the grave and placing an appropriate gravestone on the same. A few weeks ago when Mr. John B. Rauen, president of the United States Steel and Bumper Company made a trip from Los Angeles to Pamlico and Ashby districts to inspect mining propert he was accompanied by W.I. "Billy" O'Meara, who made a fortune mining in the Tonopah and Silver Peak localities in the early days of those camps. O'Meara was a personal friend of "Badger Bill". When O'Meara had finished telling the story of the early-day character Rauen insisted on visiting the desert grave. One significant feature of the trip in the Airflow is the fact that this grave of "Badger Bill" who reluctantly viewed any or all forms of transportation ( other than "shanks mare" ) was reached in a most modern vehicle which has been viewed sceptically by many who claim to be keeping with the rapidly advancing world of today. However one who has made the trip of the mountain roads of Nevada in an Airflow will readily allay this suspicion of those belief is comparable to the ill-advised theories of poor old "Badger Bill". ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ IMPORTANT: To stop receiving these notifications, you need to know if you are receiving them through a mailing list or if you subscribed through the Newspaper Abstracts website. I believed in my own heart that all the old time dash was there, but when I started to execute the speed and youthful stamina were lacking. The things I used to do were impossible. For instance I used to shoot in a right hand body punch, a sort of short range blow that never used to fail me.But when I tried it today the snap was not there and it was only a love tap. I suppose most of my trainers and helpers will say that I did not box often enought. It wouldn't have made any difference if I had sparred a dozen times more than I did. I simply was not there and that's all there is to I guess it's all my own fault, I was getting along nicely and living beautifully on my alfalfa farm but when they started calling for me and mentioning me as the white man's hope,I guess my pride got the better of my judgement. At that I worked long and hard to condition myself and I was fit, as far as strength goes, but the old snap and cash, the willingness to tear in and crush, were not with me. Six years ago, the result might have been different. But now well, I guess the public will let me alone after this. Jack Johnson is the most wonderful fighter that ever pulled on a glove. He won as he pleased from Jeffries and was never in danger. I could not help but feel sorry for the big white man as he fell beneath the champion's blow. It was the most pitiable sight I ever saw. As a matter of fact, I thought way down in my heart that Jefferies would be the winner of the fight. The fight was won and lost, when Jeffries went through the ropes the first time. This is official. The other knock down doesn't count. It was this way: Jeffries was brought to his knees and as he arose, dazed, Johnson hit him with a succession of lefts that sent him through the ropes. As he lay there, several of his seconds caught hold of him and helped him to his feet.Under the rules of the game which I have read thoroughly while certain people were saying that I couldn't referee a fight this disqualified Jeffries and Johnson was the winner. Instead they shoved him into the ring again to be beaten further while I was doing all I could to stop the fight during the confusion. Jeffries could not hit Johnson and Johnson could hit Jeffries whenever he pleased. Jefferies wasn't as good as the last time he fought. Another languid sunset in these brown hills and the great Jeffries Johnson battle will be on. In the meantime the desert city is rapidly taking on the appearance of a national convention. The delegates from the world's sporting centers are arriving on every train. The streets and hotels are filled with a shifting mob of gentlemen, thieves, gamblers and pugilists. The hum of conversation on the street is punctuated with the click of the routlette wheels and the cries of the souvenir hawkers. And all are waiting for the event which nothing but earthquake or fire or death can now prevent. The camps of the fighters are quiet with the peace of suspense. The arena is waiting out in the white dust ,an ugly skeleton that in a few hours will be palpitating with life and the thrills that the red gods and down men's spines in monents of physical strife.Probably not another stick will have to be touched. The purse money is up.all of it. the sum of $101,000 which the fight lovers will pay Jim Jeffries and Jack Johnson to measure their sinews, their brains and their fighting hearts. The only movement from the rival camps today was in the way of pleasure and thought killing. Both Jeffies and Johnson made auotmobile trips into town.Johnson just for the fun and to have the crowd stare at him and Jeffries because he had to in order to get to the fishing grounds that he decided to visit late in the afternoon. The critical time of waiting is being watched closely by sight experts. Jeffries has surprised them all by his apparent unconcern on the eve of the greatest moment in his life. Nothing else was expected from the black man. To the sporting men who made the trip to Moana Springs in the early afternoon a restful scene was presented. On the lawn at the side of his white cottage sat Jeffries and his cronies around a small table. The fighter had on a soft shirt and a soft cap rested carelessly on the back of his head. He was leaning over a hand of cards figuring how to win a few cents from his oppoonents. When he succeeded he was happy and his laugh rang out so that the crowds hanging over the fence marked 'private' smiled in sympathy. Over the group a great willow tree spread on restful branches. From a branch hung a cage with two pigeons. On the green lawn a tiny white dog played running occasionally to lick Jeffrie's hand. Around all swung the great bare hills and the green meadows. Of the thoughts that passed through Jeffries' mind, between hands as he glanced past the group out into the brilliant sunshine and the blue sky, no one fo his intimates pretended to say sometimes his eyes would take on a deep somber look and he would scowl.Again his eyes would flash in fun, a dimple would show and all would be merry as a wedding morn. To those who braved the sunshine wand the dust and the bumps in tohe road and made their way to Rickard's road house on the other side of town, another scene of rest was shown, but it was rest of a different kind. There was much hilarity and loud merriment her and the sound of singing and instrumental music breaking out at odd times prioved that the black champion and his crew were amusing themselves as if the fight were a year off and they were way down south in Dixie. The officials are: Tex Rickard of Nevada, referee. Charles White of New York, alternate referee. George F Harting of San Francisco, timekeeper. billy Jordan of San Francisco, announcer. tim Sullivan of New York, stakeholder. Tom Corbett of San Francisco betting commissioner. Despite the persistence of rumors that Rickard does not intend to actually referee the contest no tangible ground for the report could be discovered. Rickard himself denied emphatically that he had any intention of stepping down at the last minute in favor of the New Yorker. I am the referee he reiterated and I am going to do the refereeing. Here Rickard reached into his pocket and produced a roll of bills. Here just bet that fifty dollar for me that I referee the fight. That's how I feel about it. Of the fight officials named above, all but Jordan are on the ground. Harting and Sullivan arrived today. I have fifty thousand of the purse money in my own hands said Sullivan and the rest will be turned over to me tomnorrow. Rickard was at the depot to meet Sullivan. After a brief conference the pair climbed into an automobile and set out for Jeffrie's camp. Five members of sullivan's party accompanied them. When the machine drew up in front of Jeffries' cottage the fighter came forward. Hell Tim he said extending his hand. Hello replied Sullivan I wish you all kinds of luck boy. After a few moments of talk with the big man,Rickard and Sullivan whirled over the dusty road to Johnson's quarters. They arrived just after the champion returned from his afternoon road work. The greeting between Sullivan and Johnson was cordial and after an interchange of remarks the two hastened back to the city. Reno was much perturbed today by rumors. They were flying everywhere rumors about Jeffries, rumors about Johnson, rumors about Rickard and the referee job, rumors about everything and everybody directly or indirectly connected with the fight. Taking the Jeffries rumors in chronological order, this morning he broke his left forearm,at noon he ruptured a blood vessel in his elbow and at two o'clock in the afternoon he underwent an operation for appendicitis. In spite of all this hard luck, Jeffries was sufficiently recovered at five to look up from a game of cards and drawl: well so long as I am all right on Monday afternoon,it don't cut much figure what happens to me now does it? The only real affliction to come upon Jeffries during the day was one which threatened his pocket book. A suit for five thousand dollars in attorney's fees was filed against him in the district court by the local lawyers who drew up the contract conveying the fighter's share in the moving pictures to an eastern syndicate. The lawyers alleged that because of the terms of the contract with the syndicate's representative they were entitled to at least five thousand dollars they argued that since by the contract Jeffries and his partner in the deal,Tex Rickard would be sixty six thousand in good hard money as soon as the first gong tapped on Monday and that even if no blow was struck in the fight that sixty six thousand belonged to Tex and Jim absolutely and they could throw it at the birds if they likeed, five thousand did not look very big after all. Richard said later in the day that the matter had been adjusted. The lawyers said that it had not. They admitted however that it was liable to be settled at any moment. There were numerous conferences at the lawyer's offices during the day and Rickard did not appear worried in the least, so it is supposed that it was all setttled to his satisfaction or would be any moment. Another of the flock of rumors that electried into life the corps of newspaper men and sports that dotted the shady side of Center street was one to the effect that Sam Langford would box with Jim Jeffries before daylight faded. That particular rumor kept the war correspondents ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ IMPORTANT: To stop receiving these notifications, you need to know if you are receiving them through a mailing list or if you subscribed through the Newspaper Abstracts website. These two orders were promugated by Promoter Tex Rickard today. He had been beseiged with inquiries regarding the right of minors to be present and to make the matter clear he drafted the regulation set forth above. No state or municipal law restraining minors from witnessing prize fights or boxing exhibitions exists here, according to the pronmoters. But Rickard explaine in making his orders public that he was strongly opposed to children of tender years attending the championship match. He thought though that a young person between ten and fifteen was no longer a child and should be given if duly chaperoned the privelige of seeing the two greatest pugilists of the age clash in what perhaps may prove to be the last big ring event of the times., The last seat will be placed and the last nail driven in the arena before the sun sets tomorrow say the contractorsl By noon the boxing platform will be completed. This platform is powerfully constructed to sustain the terrific strain it will receive from the two men in action . It will be capaoble it is estimated of supporting a weight of 100 tons and and will be so securely bracxed and double braceced that the vibration will be eliminated. The fans who have paid 50 dollars for their arena reservations will have an advantage over their less fortunate fellow patrons, besides being nearer the fighters, their seats are made of planks tht have been smoothly planed... those of the others are what the carpenters call in the rough. It is said that there will be no five dollar seart as was first intended. The lowest price is ten dollars and unless thae sales shows signs of falling off it is understood that none will be offerd at a lower figure. There will be no boxes. Women attending the fight who wish to seperate themselves from the main body of spectators will not be enabled to do so according to the present arrangements and the contractor in charge of the work said this afternoon that no provision will be made for railing off any of the seats. Great care will be taken in roping off the ring. A railroad mechanic who is said to be an expet at rope splicing was engaged today to do the work. He will receive twenty five dollars for his servies.orsuppooldoo ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ IMPORTANT: To stop receiving these notifications, you need to know if you are receiving them through a mailing list or if you subscribed through the Newspaper Abstracts website.
