Newspaper Abstracts started out over six years ago simply as a place to share old newspaper articles I had in my collection and has grown into a site with hundreds of contributors and over 30,900 articles - with over 9,100 contributed during 2006! There are currently over 1,500 registered members on the Newspaper Abstracts site and over 10,000 subscribers to the various Old-News mail lists. An average of 750 news items are added each month and over 1,317,000 of these articles have been read on the site in just the last 18 months! Under the recent action of the legislature of Nevada, gambling in this state will be prohibited on and after October 1. Despite traditions, influence, argument and politics, the law stands and the old line gamblers have bowed before it. Although another day of grace remained to them, the wheels that have spun since the days of the characters of Bret harte and Mark Twain are still and the faro tables have been stored away. Gambling is dead and Carson city,where fortunes have shifted on the turn of a card is closed. A decision rendered by Attorney General Stoddard today places whist, bridge whist,five hundred, solo, and all other card games played for money, property or the representative of value under the ban.
