Elsie McKinnon Born In: Sydney Born: August 27th, 1945 Passed in: Sydney Passed on: August 10th, 2013 On Saturday Aug. 10, 2013, Elsie passed away and flew to God as the Angel she was. Born in Sydney on Aug. 27, 1945, Elsie was the daughter of the late Alexander and Sofia (Bernasky) McKinnon. Elsie is survived by her son, David (Heather); grandchildren, Michael (Jenna), Mitchell (Amanda) and Kaitlyn; great-grandchildren, Jacob and Aubrey; brothers, John (Joan), Alex (Winniefred) and Michael (Wanda); and sisters, Sophie (Walter) Rice, Florence (Rene) Legault and Diana (Patrick McKay). Besides her parents, Elsie was predeceased by her sister in infancy, Cecelia and great friends, Patricia and Mary. Elsie was a kind and gentle soul who prided herself in family. She enjoyed spending time with her family especially her grandchildren whom she would do anything for. Elsie always had time for her great-grandson, Jacob who proudly called her 'G-Ma' and she could be seen playing go fish or snakes and ladders or anything he wanted to do. Sadly, mom didn't get to hold her new great-grandchild, Aubrey but when a picture or a little video was shown her smile would light up the room. Mom enjoyed the company of many of her friends, especially her friends at the Griffin Street Seniors Complex where she resided up until last year when an illness caused her to have to move in with our family. There are many words that could be used to describe Mom but I choose to use 'Angel', she believed in the healing power of God which might explain why she overcame so many difficulties in life and beat so many illnesses. Sadly, what she used the most was her heart, which led to her passing. Mom was a member of Holy Redeemer Parish and attended whenever her health allowed her to do, in her final days she would pray with the Chaplin at the Halifax Infirmary and would take Communion. I know for sure Mom is in Heaven with family and friends and will watch down over everyone, may you rest in peace Mom, we all love you! Funeral mass will be celebrated Thursday, Aug. 15, 2013, at 11 a.m. in Holy Redeemer Church with Fr. Paul Murphy officiating. Interment will take place in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Elsie may be made to An Cala unit of Cape Breton Regional Hospital. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the care and direction of Pier Community Funeral Home. Online condolences may be forwarded to the family at www.pierfuneralhome.com.
