Born in Inverness on September 16th, 1940, Dougie was a son of the late Dougall Alexander and Katie Sarah (MacLean) Burke. Dougie was a member of Stella Maris Church, Inverness. Dougie worked for many years for Snow White Laundry, Sydney, traveling throughout Inverness County. He later owned and operated a taxi business and convenience store, Peg’s Market, until his retirement. Although he and his wife Peggy had no children, he is survived by his niece Roberta (David) Taylor, Inverness, who he considered his daughter, and his godson John Basker, Inverness, who he considered his son. Dougie is survived by sister Mary (Russell) Comeau, Dartmouth; brothers Angus (Eva) Bramalea, Ont.; and Gerard (Debbie), Toronto Ont.; several nieces and nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. Predeceased by his wife Florence Marie “Peggy”; brothers George (late Mary), David (Peggy), Malcolm, John (late Mary), Ernest (late Joyce), and David Anthony. Visitation was held on Sunday, September 8th. Funeral mass was held on Monday, September 9th at 11:00 a.m. in Stella Maris Church, Inverness with Fr. Duncan MacIsaac officiating. Burial to follow in the parish cemetery. GOOGOO Stanley Francis Googoo, 67, Waycobah First Nation, passed away on Thursday, August 29th, 2013, in the Victoria County Memorial Hospital, Baddeck. Born in Whycocomagh, Inverness Co., he was a son of the late Michael Peter and Ellen (Sylliboy) Googoo. Stanley was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, godfather, uncle and friend. He will be sadly missed by so many, and his love and friendship will be remembered in all our hearts. The love he had for his wife and family was the strength that helped him through the past few months. He was a man of faith and did so much for his parish because he was such a kind person with a great heart. He enjoyed decorating his home for Christmas, right down to Santa Clause and his sleigh. He did this for all the children of the community to enjoy. His love of sports was evident in the many years of competing in canoe races and in snowmobile races. Hunting was also a sport he enjoyed. He was water commissioner for Waycobah for 24 years. He also did snow removal for over 40 years. He was a commercial oyster fisherman and scuba diver. He owned his own construction business, and he was a canoe racer. He was a member of Blessed Kateri Parish, Holy Trinity Church, Waycobah, and he devoted his entire life to the church. The family at this time would like to thank Dr. Genge, Dr. Chow and the nursing staff at the Victoria County Memorial Hospital, while Stanley was in the hospital. Surviving are his loving wife of 22 years, Betty (Prosper), Waycobah; daughters Darla (John L.) Bernard, Natlie and Patricia (Stewart) Peters, all of Waycobah; sons Adrian (Jennifer), Waycobah; Terry (Arlene), Membertou; Cory and Jonathan, both of Waycobah; sisters Mary Bernard, Waycobah; Anna K. (Francis) Pierro, Wagmatcook; Germaine (Phillip) Martin, Millbrook; Geraldine Paul, Waycobah; Barbara Googoo, Maine; brothers William, Millbrook; Bernie B. (Phylis) and Henry (Binta), both of Waycobah; 23 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren, as well as several godchildren, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by grandparents Grand Chief Gabriel and Harriet Sylliboy; beloved son Sheldon; brothers Gabriel, Alex R., Ryan J., Donald, Chief Wayne. Visitation was after 2:00 p.m. Saturday, August 31st, in the Fishery Building, 160 Reservation Road, Waycobah First Nation. Funeral mass was held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, from Blessed Kateri Parish Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church, Waycobah First Nation, with Father Paul Abbass officiating, with co-celebrants, Father’s Callistus Abazie, Robert McNeil and Bernie MacDonald. Burial followed in the parish cemetery. Funeral arrangements were under the care and direction of Dennis Haverstock Funeral Chapel, Whycocomagh. Words of comfort may be forwarded to the family at www.haverstocks.com. LeBLANC It is with heavy hearts that we regret to announce the passing of Roger Thomas LeBlanc, age 56, of East Margaree. Born on February 20th, 1957, Roger and his family moved to Montreal a few years later, where he graduated from MacDonald Cartier High School. During his senior high school years, Roger’s love for music led him into forming a rhythm and blues band called Dealers Choice. At the age of 24, during a family visit back to Cape Breton, Roger met the woman who he knew someday he would marry. Roger’s love and faithfulness to his wife and children were of utmost importance to him. Roger, an entrepreneur, opened his own business, Roger’s Hardwood Flooring, where he worked for 15 years. In 2009, Roger returned to school where he took a course as a continuing care assistant, followed with employment at Foyer Père Fiset Nursing Home in Cheticamp. With his caring, compassion and God-filled heart, he gave the residents the best of himself. Roger was a believer in positive change. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him. Roger leaves behind his loving wife and best friend, Elaine LeBlanc; his two children Jesse, age 23, and Sara, age 18. His mother, Mary Agnes LeBlanc, Margaree Forks; his brothers Kevin, Vietnam, and Sandy, Fort McMurray; sisters Gail Leeke, Fort McMurray, and Angela, Margaree Forks; nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his father, John Thomas LeBlanc. The body rested at St. Michael’s Parish Hall. Funeral mass was held on Friday, September 6th, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. in St. Michael’s Church, East Margaree with Father Doug MacDonald officiating. Condolences may be sent to: [email protected] MELCHOR Lillian Pauline (MacLellan) Melchor passed away on May 12th, 2013 in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Polly was the daughter of Dr. Dan and Frances MacLellan of Port Hood.and#8239;She was predeceased by her husband, Dr. Charles F. Melchor, by her parents Dr. Dan and Frances and her brother Keith.and#8239;Polly was born on February 20th, 1930 and earned her early education in Inverness County.and#8239;As a teenager, she began her working life at the Royal Bank in Port Hawkesbury and continued working with the bank in both Montreal and Calgary.and#8239;She returned to Nova Scotia and worked with Air Canada in Halifax and then in Toronto. She continued her career with Drake Personnel and was instrumental in opening their London, Ont. branch.and#8239;In 1964, she married Charlie and moved to Decatur, Illinois and later, Bloomington, Illinois, where she embarked on a long-term commitment to volunteer work, earning recognition for her volunteer service.and#8239;Polly was an avid and fearsome duplicate bridge player and crossword ace. In 1980, she and Charlie moved to Myrtle Beach where she cared for Charlie during ill health.and#8239;In recent years she resided at Covenant Towers until her death.and#8239;Fondly remembered by sisters Joan (Bill) Emmerson, Willowdale; Elaine (George) Hall, Halifax; Carole (Paul) Lundy, Richmond Hill; and Anne (Steve) Malick, Wentworth and Port Hood; and brothers Donald (Phyllis); Truro; Jack (Lynn), North Bay and Port Hood; and Brian (Ann Marie), Truro; and many nieces and nephews.
