Born in the rear of Christmas Island, a son of the late Rory S. and Eliza MacNeil, Dan went on to marry the love of his life, Isabel (Gillis) MacNeil and together they raised three children. Papa, as the family all called him, was a veteran of the Second World War and a lifetime member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 128, Whitney Pier. Often times, you could find him down "the well" with "the boys", selling poppies or shooting a dart on Thursday nights, where he earned the nickname, Dan Archie "Killer" MacNeil. Until retirement, Dan was employed by Devco railway for many years. Papa will be remembered for his quick wit and handsome little grin. His ability to "tell it like it is" and crack a dry joke was enough to brighten the day of anyone in his presence. A quiet and simple man, his day began at 6 a.m. over a hot cup of tea, his boiled eggs and newspaper. His day just wouldn't be the same without his morning ritual. In recent years, he never missed an episode of Two and a Half Men, only if Charlie Sheen was in it, of course. Dan is survived by his daughter and best buddy, with whom he resided most of his life, Margie MacNeil; daughter, Linda (Ray) Doucet; son, Danny (Honey) MacNeil; special grandchildren, Megan (Josh) White, Joe MacNeil, Leann Doucet, Jennifer MacNeil and Jason MacNeil; great-grandchildren, Aiden McNeil, Shailynne McNeil, Kileigh White, Jaxson White, Nicole Piercey and Samantha Piercey; and great-great-grandson, Mason Piercey. He also leaves behind many nieces, nephews and cousins who loved him deeply. He was predeceased by his loving wife, Isabel (Gillis) MacNeil; two children in infancy; sister, Sadie McInnis and brothers, Steven, Alec, Murdock, John Dan, Ben, Angus and Jimmy. Visitation will take place at Sydney Memorial Chapel on Thursday 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. A funeral service will be held in the chapel on Friday 11 a.m., with Rev. Paul Murphy officiating. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Palliative Care. The family would like to send a heartfelt thank you to the Cape Breton Palliative Care nurses and doctors, as well as Dr. Buhariwalla, his family doctor. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.sydneymemorialchapel.ca or email [email protected] "There are moments in life when you wish you could bring someone down from heaven, spend the day with them just one more time, give them one more hug, kiss them good-bye or hear their voice again.
