Born in Isle aux Morte, N.L., she was the daughter of the late James and Amelia (Huelin) Lefrense. Edith Jane moved to Louisbourg from Isle aux Morte in 1950. She was employed with National Sea Products for 37 years, retiring in 1988. While working she was very active in the union serving as treasurer for 25 years. Edith Jane was an active member of St. Bartholomew’s Church, Louisbourg, and the ACW for many years. She was also a longtime member of the LOBA Lodge and True Blue Lodge. Until recent years, she was a member of the Louisbourg Seniors Club where she especially enjoyed playing cards and bingo with her many friends. Edith is survived by her daughter, Lorraine Murphy, Ontario; daughter-in-law, Mary Marsden, Louisbourg; grandchildren, Gary (Brenda) Kendall, Main-a-Dieu, Kelly Kendall (Glenn), Sydney, Claudette (Jim) Gale, Wayne (Tara) Murphy, Dana Murphy, all of Ontario; great-grandchildren, Ryan, Mathew and Dean Kendall, Kayla Kendall, Olivia and David Gale and Gracelynn Murphy; her first great-great-grandchild, Gracie Ann Marie Kendall. She is also survived by her sister, Hilda (Garland) Thorne; brother-in-law, Eric Meade; as well as several nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Cecil Marsden, daughter, Frances Kendall, sons, Dorman and Walter, sisters, Marion Morrison and Alma Meade, brothers, Walter and Eli Lefrense. Visitation will be held Thursday, Sept. 26, 2013, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the St. Bartholomew’s Church, Louisbourg. Anne (Kendall) Knox Born In: Glace Bay Passed in: Glace Bay Passed on: September 24th, 2013 The family wish to announce the passing of Anne (Kendall) Knox, 91 on Tuesday, Sept. 24, 2013, at the Glace Bay Hospital. Anne was a lifelong resident of Glace Bay, and was the daughter of the late Joseph and Winifred (Byrnes) Kendall. She will be sadly missed by her children, Wallace (Susan), Alfie (Heather), Margie (Harold), Gloria (George), John (Kim), Linda (Jimmie Bennett – deceased), Jessie (Silby Smith – deceased), Norman (Mary), Jimmie (Thelma) Juanita, Janet, Glen (Rose) Heather, Harold (Margie). Also surviving are 37 grandchildren, 52 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren; sisters, Beatrice, Kate, Willena; brother, Myles. Besides her parents, Anne was predeceased by her husband, Clifford, son, William and four grandchildren, brother, Jake (Dit), sisters, Irene and Theresa. Deborah 'Debbie' Kozera Born In: Glace Bay Born: February 21st, 1960 Passed in: Kingston, Canada Passed on: September 22nd, 2013 It is with great sadness that we announce Debbie’s passing, at the age of 53, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Debbie had settled in the Annapolis Valley for the past 20 years and was formerly from Glace Bay. She passed away at her home in Kingston, N.S., on Sept. 22, 2013, surrounded by her devoted husband, family and friends. Born in Glace Bay on Feb. 21, 1960, she was the daughter of Marion (Borgal MacLeod) MacPhee and the late William ‘Doss’ Macleod. Debbie was a kind-hearted soul who loved to stop and smell the flowers. She had a knack for decorating, crafting and caring for others. Debbie loved shopping and enjoyed looking for a bargain, but most of all loved spending time with her family. She devoted much of her time to her children and was a proud military spouse. Debbie will always be remembered with a cup of tea in her hand and looking for something sweet to go with it. Left with fond and loving memories are her husband of 23 years, John Patrick of Whitney Pier; daughters Samantha and Kristina (Francis Gagnon); son, Matt (Marylee [Hirtle]); grandchildren, Liam, Aiden and Catherine; and mother, Marion MacPhee. Passed away Monday, Sept. 23, 2013, in Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney. Born in Inverness, she was a daughter of the late Peter Francis and Nancy Jessie (Googoo) Phillips. Jane was a homemaker and a member of Blessed Kateri Parish Holy Trinity Church, Waycobah. She is survived by her husband, Alfred Sr.; daughter, Rachael Phillips, Waycobah; sons, Andrew (Kelly) Phillips, Alfred Jr. (Tamara) Young and Stanford Phillips, all of Waycobah; sister, Elizabeth L. Born in Glace Bay, Cleo was the daughter of the late John and Lucy (Osmond) Young. Cleo was employed with the Glace Bay Telegraph Company as well as in Toronto. She was a cook with the Glace Bay Hotel and the Miners' Village Restaurant. In her earlier years she worked at a factory in Toronto. Cleo will be sadly missed by daughters, Cindy (Daniel) MacLeod, Margaree; sons, Reggie (Florence) and Dwayne — with whom Cleo resided, Joseph (Melissa), Shane, all of Glace Bay, Aaron (Juanita), Membertou; sister, Mamie Melnick, Glace Bay; brother, Justin (Violet) Young, Ontario. Also surviving are grandchildren, Jordan, Brendon, Dustin, Dawson, Cassandra, Lisa, Courtney, Josselyn, Danielle and Reggie. John 'Paddy' McKinnon Born In: Sydney Passed in: Sydney Passed on: September 23rd, 2013 It is with broken hearts that we announce the sudden passing of a beloved husband, father, grandfather and uncle, John Patrick 'Paddy' McKinnon, in the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, on Monday, Sept. 23, 2013, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Sydney, he was the son of the late Dan and Margaret (MacQuarrie) McKinnon. During his younger years he worked as a projectionist for Empire Theatres as well as owner/operator of Master CB service. He was a member of the New Victoria Volunteer Fire Department for over 25 years, where he served as secretary for many of them. There will never be a greater husband, father and grandfather than “Dad.” He is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Barbara (McSween); daughters, Edith (Rick) Posedi, Markdale, Ont., and Linda (Robert) McLeod, Victoria Mines; grandchildren, who were his pride and joy, Nicholas and Maggie Posedi and Curtis McLeod; as well as many nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by sisters, Mary (Dan) Currie and Josephine Murphy, in-laws, Lawrence and Catherine (Fraser) McSween, who loved him like their own son. Myrtle (MacDonald) Vaters Born In: Bridgeport Born: June 13th, 1924 Passed in: Moncton, New Brunswick, Canada Passed on: September 22nd, 2013 Myrtle Irene (MacDonald) Vaters, 89, of Moncton, formerly of Glace Bay, passed away peacefully on Sept. 22, 2013 at the Dr. Georges-L. Dumont Hospital surrounded by her loving family. Born in Bridgeport, Glace Bay, June 13, 1924, youngest daughter of the late Neil and Clara MacDonald. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family, predeceased by seven brothers and six sisters. Myrtle was a long time member of Bethel Pentecostal Church, Glace Bay. Myrtle’s true legacy to her family was her Godly example as a woman of faith with a personal relationship with her loving Lord. She was a true prayer warrior and was most happy when surrounded by all her family. Myrtle was dearly loved and will be sadly missed by her husband of 58 years, Edward; her son Blair (Debra & Holli) of Moncton; daughters, Beverly Thompson (Jeff, Melissa, Nathan and Julie) of Halifax and Pauline MacKinnon (Eric, Lianne, Angela and Heather) of Brookfield, N.S. Myrtle was a loving wife, daughter, sister, grandmother and an inspiration to her many friends and family. Sister Callista MacLeod CND Born In: Antigonish, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed in: Sydney Passed on: September 22nd, 2013 Sister Callista MacLeod, 94, died peacefully on Sept. 22, 2013, at the CND Health Center in Sydney. Born in Antigonish, she was the daughter of the late John H. MacLeod and Agnes Elizabeth MacKeough. Besides her parents, Sister Callista was predeceased by her brothers, Malcolm and Neil and sisters Alice, Margaret, Rita and Theresa. She was the last surviving member of her family. Sister Callista made her religious profession in the Congregation of Notre Dame on Aug. 28, 1940. Her many years of service in the Congregation were spent as a dedicated educator in Sydney, Mabou, New Victoria and New Castle, N.B. Her integrity and an immense sense of duty were the hallmarks of her service to the CND and to all those to whom she ministered as high school teacher and principal, as mentor to candidates for the Duke of Edinburgh Awards. Her accomplishments were acknowledged by Prince Edward. She was also spiritual guide to women who were among the first Associates of the Congregation. Countless numbers of students, parents and friends were influenced by her generosity, keen intellect and love of nature. In her final years her prayerful silence and gracious acceptance of service were an inspiration to those who ministered to her. She will be greatly missed by her Sister companions for her friendship, warm smile and kindness. Visitation for Sister Callista will take place at T.W. Mary 'Cathy' (Fraser) Martin Born In: New Waterford Passed in: New Waterford Passed on: September 23rd, 2013 Mary Catherine ‘Cathy’ Martin, age 63, of George Street, Scotchtown, passed away on Monday, Sept. 23, 2013, at the New Waterford Consolidated Hospital. Born in New Waterford, Cathy was the daughter of the late Alexander Daniel and Flora Sarah (Kennedy) Fraser. Cathy was a very friendly and polite lady who loved her family and grandchildren. She is survived by her husband, Julien Martin; three sons, Alan Fraser Kaarto, Scotchtown, Stephen Fraser and Jason Fraser, Ontario; two grandchildren, Aden Tomas Kaarto and Preston Fraser. Besides her parents, Cathy was predeceased by a brother, John. Cremation has taken place, no visitation. A service will be held at a later date. Patrick Corbett Born In: Sydney Born: December 6th, 1942 Passed in: Toronto, Ontario, Canada Passed on: September 15th, 2013 We are grieved to announce the death of our brother, Pat Corbett. Pat came into this world Dec. 6, 1942 and left the world after a short battle with cancer on Sept. 15, 2013. Pat leaves three children, his daughter, Darlene and twin sons, Patrick and James. Pat also leaves his brothers, James in British Columbia and Melvin, Gerald and Shawn, all of Sydney; his sisters, Priscilla in Ontario and Colleen in Sydney. Pat was predeceased by his parents, Margaret and James Corbett and his brother, Ronald. Pat left Sydney many years ago to find his fame and fortune in Toronto. He worked and resided in Toronto for the past fifty years, often returning to Sydney for a summer holiday. At Pat's request there was no visitation and cremation has taken place.
