Born in Big Pond, Allan was the son of the late Bernard Joseph and Margaret Cameron (MacNeil) Gillis of Sydney. Allan served with the RCAF for 25 years and then was employed by IMP in Dartmouth until retirement. Allan is survived by his wife, Lillian Ruth (O'Neill); daughter, Diane Elizabeth, of Aberdeen; sister, Dianne (Norm) Ferguson; brothers, Neil (Sandra), Gordon (Patricia) all of Sydney; Stanley (Ellen) of Uxbridge, ON; sister-in-law, Joan, Boston and many nieces and nephews. Beside his parents, Bernie and Marg, Allan was predeceased by his brother, Bernard Stephen, Boston; brother, Allan Phillip; sister, Joan Marie both in infancy; his son, Christopher Joseph, and infant grandson, Sean. Patrick Spencer Born In: Port Aux Basques Passed in: North Sydney Passed on: September 26th, 2013 It is with great sorrow we announce the passing of Patrick Spencer, beloved husband, father, grandfather and brother, on Thursday, September 26, 2013 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney. Born in Port Aux Basques, Nfld., Patrick was the son of the late Steven and Emma (Butt) Spencer. Patrick was employed as a Quartermaster with the Marine Atlantic vessels for 32 years until his retirement. He was a member of St. Matthew Wesley United Church, North Sydney. He is survived by his wife Mary (White) (MacDonald) Spencer; his son Steven (Barb) Spencer, Oshawa, ON.; and daughter Patricia (Earl) Boutilier, North Sydney; his step-children Patricia (Bob) Ben, ON, Angela (Reg) Farrell, St. John's, William MacDonald, North Sydney, Raymond (Barb) MacDonald, Fort McMurray, Gail (John) Parsons, Little Bras d'Or, Mary Arlene (Jim) Aitken, Hinton, AB.; his brother Ross Spencer; and sister Pauline Samms and step-brothers Frank and Bob Matthews. Also surviving are 16 grandchildren Paul, Graham, Jenna, Daniel, Suzanne, Robbie, Kent, Kelda, Colleen, John, Craig, Melissa, Sasha, James, Necha, Raymond and 18 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his first wife Viola Kaizer and his daughter Mary Ann MacDonald; brothers Steven, Sidney, Henry and George and sisters Eileen and Ruth. There will be no visitation. A funeral service for Pat will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday at St. Matthew Wesley United Church with Rev. David Luker officiating. Burial to take place at Lakeside Cemetery, North Sydney. Lui Baretta Born: August 10th, 1931 Passed in: Glace Bay Passed on: September 26th, 2013 It is with heartfelt sadness that we, the family, announce the peaceful passing of Lui on September 26, 2013 in the Palliative Care Unit of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, with family at his side. Lui was a quiet family man who cherished his wife and children and a close circle of friends. As a young man, Lui joined the Canadian Air Force serving his tour of duty in Germany. While in the Air Force, he struck up a friendship with Greg Larade from New Waterford. Upon their completion of air force service, they came back to Cape Breton to start up an egg business which Lui was involved with for a number of years. After leaving the egg business, Lui started doing carpentry work and soon became an independent carpenter building homes for clients in the Glace Bay area. Over the 40 years Lui worked this trade, he became well respected and sought after for his fine craftsmanship. Lui leaves behind his wife Rose (MacDonald); daughter Elma (Kevin) Farrell; son Alan (both of Halifax); sister Bruna (James) Bailey; brother Pasquale (Tina) (Ontario); brothers-in-law Rev. Jackie (Sheila) MacDonald and Gerald Farrell (Ontario); sisters-in-law Muriel Campbell and Margaret MacDonald. Also survived by nephew, best friend and business partner David Bailey and many other nieces and nephews. Lui is predeceased by his parents, Silvio and Theresa (Marangoni) Baretta. Visititation will take place at Patten Funeral Home, 71 Union St., Glace Bay on Monday September 30th from 7-9 p.m. Funeral services will take place at Immaculate Conception Church, Bridgeport on Tuesday October 1st at 11a.m. with Father Leo Boone, assisted by Rev. Jackie MacDonald. Interment will take place in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens, Sydney Highway. Reception in the church hall following service. At the family request, family flowers only. Joseph Barry Born In: North Sydney Passed on: September 26th, 2013 It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our dear husband, father, brother and friend, Joseph 'Joe' A. Barry, age 71, on Thursday, September 26, 2013 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney. Born in North Sydney, Joe was the son of the late Joseph and Mary (MacKinnon) Barry. Joe was employed in the transportation industry in the Halifax area until he returned to Cape Breton in 1993 and began working with Humpty Dumpty and Hostess until he retired in 2002. He was an avid Toronto Maple Leafs fan and loved hockey with a passion that only true hockey fans could appreciate. Joe had a passion for his animals and rescued numerous cats and dogs over the years and spoiled his pets with all his compassion and love. Joe is survived by his wife Shelley (Grant) and his sons Aaron Barry, at home and Paul Barry, Halifax; his step-children Kerri (Paul) MacCormack, and their children Ava, Bryce and Ella; Chris (Tierney) Saunders and their children Lexie and Zoe. Joe was so proud of his blended family and all their accomplishments. He would often say how their kindness and love for him was more than any man could expect. Joe is also survived by his brother Anthony (Joyce) Barry, Hamilton and his sisters Sharon (John) Targett, Georges River, Linda (Sheldon) McGean, Florence, and sisters-in-law Phyllis MacKinnon, North Sydney, Diane (Joe) Metz, Baddeck, Peggy (Bud) MacLeod, North Sydney; brothers-in-law Jim (Sharon) Grant, Moncton, Danny (Bonita) Grant, Vancouver, Troy (Trish) Grant, North Sydney and many nieces and nephews. Mary Jane Pero Born In: North Sydney Born: May 28th, 1956 Passed in: North Sydney Passed on: September 27th, 2013 It is with broken hearts that we, the family, announce the passing of Mary Jane Pero, on Friday, Sept. 27, 2013, at the Northside General Hospital, surrounded by her loving family. Born in North Sydney on May 28, 1956, she was the daughter of the late William and Florence (Forrest) Donovan. Mom enjoyed sitting at the table scratching her tickets, and going for a Sunday drive. Mary Jane is survived by her loving husband of 43 years, William (Nelson) Pero; her son, George; her three daughters, Sarah (Brad), Nicole (Nick) and Catherine (Brian), and her seven grandkids, whom she adored with all her heart, Merissa, Kaylee, Hayden, Tyler, Brian, William and Michael. There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place. A celebration of her life will be held on Monday, Sept. 30, 2013, at 2 p.m. in J. M. Jobes Funeral Home, 635 Main St., Sydney Mines, with Fr. Kenneth 'Bill' Marrs Born In: Dartmouth Passed in: Hubley Passed on: September 25th, 2013 Kenneth 'Bill' William Marrs, 80, of Hubley passed away on Sept. 25, 2013 in the QEII Health Sciences Center, Halifax. Born in Dartmouth, he was the son of the late Alfred and Jessie (Russell) Marrs. Bill retired in 1988 from Sears with 33 years of service as the Senior Shop Supervisor and then worked for Provincial Lawn and Turf as their small engine mechanic for a few years to keep himself busy. He was founding and life member Bay Road Volunteer Fire Department working tirelessly to build and keep the trucks on the road. Bill was a kind gentle soul, unselfish and a man of his word, if Bill said it would be done, it was done. He was also known as Mr. Fix It, always willing to help friends or strangers alike, with four boys and their friends there was always something to fix in the garage. Bill was quick with a smile and always had a twinkle in his amazing blue eyes. He had a sense of humour and sarcasm that will be missed by all. Survived by his best friend, Olive Hackett; sons, Greg, Hubley; Robert (Lynne), Dartmouth; Kenny, Hubley, Malcolm 'Maxx' (Nena), Sydney; brothers, Warren and Michael both of B.C.; sisters, Jean , Ontario, Shirley, B.C.; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; 2nd wife Barbara Parnham.
