Cape Breton Deaths courtesy of CAPE BRETON GENEALOGY & HISTORICAL ASSOCIATION VISIT OUR WEBSITE - <http://www.cbgen.org/>www.cbgen.org NEW MEMBERS WELCOME Ottawa Citizen September 06, 2013 Friday Evelyn McDonnell (nee Evelyn Higgins) August 28, 1928 - Sept 05, 2013 Evelyn passed quietly on Thursday morning, September 5, being comforted by family throughout her last days. Evelyn was born in Truro, Nova Scotia and at the age of 20 married her first love, John Higgins (predeceased her in 1972). Together they lived and raised their family in Nova Scotia, Kingston, Petawawa and then Ottawa. Evelyn was one of 9 children of John James MacDonnell from Judique North, Inverness County, and Annie Mae Walsh. She has had to say goodbye to her siblings Daniel, Rose, Helen, Eileen, Mae and Joan over the years. Surviving Evelyn is her sister Pat (Jim Morrow) and brother Jack as well as many nieces and nephews. Evelyn leaves lasting memories with her and John's 3 children; Linda (Cliff Williams) and their daughters Kate (Mark Dannenfeldt) and Whitney (Aaron Brown); Sharon (Arnie Boeyen) and their sons Dave (Kelly Nelson) and Shawn; and Ron (Wendy Pasher) and their children Kerry, Mike (Suzie Gauthier) and Scott. She was proud to be a Grandmother and a Great-grandmother to Danika, Kayden, and Dylan. Evelyn retired from Nortel (BNR) after a successful career, with most of her time spent at the Corkstown campus. She was so proud of being labelled a Nortel Pioneer. In her retirement, she attempted to golf (stupid game), danced whenever she could, and had some great 'travel and see the world' adventures with her niece Gerry. She was known to speak her mind, and stand her ground - especially in Florida hotel rooms! In 1990 she married her second love, Harold Wood (pre-deceased her in 2009) and became family to Harold's entire clan including his children Linda, Jim, Patricia, Dianne, Donna, Leslie and Barry, their children and their grandchildren. For the past several years Evelyn has been under the daily care of the very special staff of Gatineau 2 South at the Perley Rideau Centre. The family would like to thank the very special staff of Gatineau 2 South at the Perley Rideau Centre as well as the magicians in the Art Department who converted her into a wonderful artist. Donations on Evelyn's behalf to the Perley and Rideau Veterans Health Centre Foundation would be appreciated. Friends may visit at the Garden Chapel of Tubman Funeral Home 3440 Richmond Road, (between Baseline and Bayshore Dr.) on Friday, September 6, 2013 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. A service will be held in the Chapel on Saturday, September 7, 2013 at 10:30 a.m. Interment to follow at Pinecrest Cemetery.
