Cape Breton Deaths courtesy of CAPE BRETON GENEALOGY & HISTORICAL ASSOCIATION VISIT OUR WEBSITE - <http://www.cbgen.org/>www.cbgen.org NEW MEMBERS WELCOME Halifax Herald October 23, 2013 Wednesday Alexander Ralph Alex Smith, age 88 of Halifax, passed away Saturday, October 19, 2013. Alex was born on April 30, 1925, to David and Jennie (Cameron) Smith of Port Hood, Inverness County. In 1943 he joined the ACAF, graduated and was discharged in 1945. In 1951, he rejoined and became a flying instructor in training command serving at Centralia, and at Central Flying School, Trenton, Ont. Alex then went to Maritime OUT in Summerside, P.E.I. and was posted to 404 Squadron at Greenwood (1959 - 1963), which then was followed by a staff tour at Maritime Air Command and the Halifax Dockyard. He then returned to the 405 Squadron as a pilot leader/EXO (1962 - 1972). Upon Retiring he began a new Career in real estate, starting with Royal Trust and several other companies in Halifax, Dartmouth and Chester areas. He is survived by his second wife of 36 years, Ann (Piercy) and her daughters, Katherine, Vancouver; Cynthia (Timothy), Fall River and their three children; his five sons, Bryant (Freda), Fall River; Errold (Celeste), Chester Basin, Gary (Laura, Saint John, N.B.; Dennis (Debbie), Hammond Plains; Gregory (Margo), Bridgewater; 10 grandchildren; sister, Jean Cooley, Halifax. He was predeceased by his first wife, Lyla (Young) Neid of Blandford, the mother of his five sons; and sister, Emily Sweet (of Antigonish). He will be remembered for his keen intrest in genealogy and for updating Samuel Smith's extended family. Our heartfelt thanks to the VON and the care workers for their compassion and Assistance. The body has been cremated. A celebration of Alex's life will be held Saturday afternoon, November 2, between 1-3 p.m. in the party room, 5524 Heatherwood Court Halifax. Burial will take place on Port Hood at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to Victorian Order of Nurses submitted by "ALLAN J. GILLIS" <[email protected]>
