Born at Isle Aux Morte, she was the daughter of the late John and Sarah Wells. She was a former member of St. Aidan's Anglican Church, Westmount. Leasie was the last surviving member of her immediate family. A loving wife, mother and grandmother, she always put her family first. She spent many days at the sewing machine sewing for her daughters. This was her passion. She was predeceased by her husband, Andrew in 1998 and also by her daughter, Nancy in infancy. She will be dearly missed by her sons, Donald (Peggy), Westmount, Kennie (Martina), Toronto; daughters, Mrs. Dolores Campbell, Toronto, Bonnie (Ralph) Leon, Mississauga, Denise (Kevin) Andrea, Dartmouth, and Betty Lou (Brian) Cann, Dartmouth, and by 12 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, and six great-great-grandchildren. Visitation for the late Mrs. Phillipo will be from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 17, 2013, at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel. Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Friday in Church of Christ the King (formerly Christ Church) with Rev. Laura McCue officiating followed by interment in St. Mark's Cemetery, Coxheath. Kay Burns Born In: Glace Bay Passed in: Glace Bay Passed on: October 14th, 2013 Kay Burns, 75, of Drew Street, Glace Bay, passed away on Monday, Oct. 14, 2013, at the Glace Bay Hospital. Born in Glace Bay, she was the daughter of the late Ralph Robert and Annie Barter. Kay was a member of Glace Bay United Baptist Church. Kay graduated from Normal College, Truro, and was employed as a teacher for 34 years, retiring in 1994 from Lakevale School, Sydney. Some of her hobbies included bowling, knitting, sewing, quilting and in her younger years, dancing. Kay was an avid fan of the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles and the Toronto Blue Jays. But mostly, Kay will be remembered as a loving and compassionate lady. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She will be sadly missed by her loving husband of over 50 years, Pat Burns; two daughters, Cheryl Gallagher (Archie), Glace Bay, Kim Luke (Bruce), New Jersey; two sons, Todd (Laurie), Halifax, Stanley (Brenda), Alberta; 10 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Kay was predeceased by two sisters, June Blades and Jeanette Shaw. Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. Lawrence 'Lonnie' Bates Born In: New Waterford Born: September 18th, 1926 Passed in: New Waterford Passed on: October 11th, 2013 Lawrence Joseph 'Lonnie' Bates, 87, died on Oct. 11, 2013, with his family by his side after a short stay at the New Waterford Consolidated Hospital. Born in New Waterford, on Sept. 18, 1926, he was the son of the late Martin R. Bates of Louisbourg and Mary-Ann MacInnis of McAdam's Lake. Growing up he enjoyed playing baseball and hockey and was an avid fan of the Toronto Maple Leafs. His early working life began at the Sydney Steel Plant, and he later became the owner-operator of Dryden-Bates Insurance Company in Glace Bay. He was a member of the KOC for many years, being a 3rd degree member and former Grand Knight. As years went on, he enjoyed watching baseball and hockey on television, and always enjoyed drives in his car. He especially enjoyed visits from his young nieces and nephews, and will always be remembered for providing his assessment on matters of the day. He is survived by his sister, Martina Andrea; his sister-in-law, Theresa Bates; his brother-in-law, Bob Hubbard; and many nephews and nieces. Besides his parents, Martin and Mary Ann, he was also predeceased by siblings, Loretta (Lollie) Bates, Angus (Buster) Bates, Katie Bates, Carmel Hubbard and Leona Ciancio. Visitation will be held today (Tuesday, Oct. 15) from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Requesting KOC members to meet at the funeral home at 7:30 p.m. for prayers. A funeral mass will be celebrated Wednesday, Oct. 16 at 10 a.m. in the Parish of Saint Leonard, Mt. Carmel Avenue in New Waterford with Fr. Jake Andrea officiating. Burial will be held in Mt. Carmel Cemetery followed by a luncheon at the KOC Hall, and all are welcome. Elizabeth 'Betty' MacLeod Born In: Port Caledonia Passed in: Glace bay Passed on: October 11th, 2013 Betty MacLeod, 82, of Grove Street, Glace Bay, passed away suddenly on Friday, Oct. 11, 2013, at her residence. Born in Port Caledonia, she was the daughter the late George and Elizabeth (Derbyshire) Crocker. Betty was employed at Jay's Restaurant, Glace Bay for many years. She had a great zest for life and loved to travel. Betty was known to have a straight forward approach to life; she expected this from herself and others. She was a member of the Tower Road Fire Department and Legion Dart League and Mixed League. She was a member of St. Mary's Anglican Church. Betty is survived by her daughter, Cindy (Glen) Tredwell, Marconi Towers; four sons, Graham (Brenda), Calgary, John Arthur (Evelyn), Northside East Bay, Eric (Margie), Ontario, Ron, at home on Grove Street; four sisters, Olive Brown (Art), Jeanette Wagg (husband, Ron, deceased), Donna Babstock (husband, Winston, deceased), Debbie Lockwood (Dan); two brothers, Jack Crocker (Dena), Arthur Crocker (Betty Lou); 10 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Betty was predeceased by her husband, Floyd Wesley MacLeod, two brothers, Kent and Frank Crocker and a granddaughter, Brianna. Visitation will be held on Thursday evening from 7-9 p.m. in the V.J. Lloyd Wilson Hare Born In: North Sydney Passed in: North sydney Passed on: October 11th, 2013 It is with great sadness we announce the peaceful passing of our dear husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, uncle and friend, Lloyd W. Hare, 91, on Friday Oct. 11, 2013, at Harbour View Hospital, Sydney Mines, with his loving wife Flo by his side. Born in North Sydney, Lloyd was a son of the late Rupert and Rebecca (Billard) Hare. Lloyd was a veteran of the Second World War serving with the Canadian Air Force and later with the Canadian Army. Lloyd worked as a stevedore for CN Marine for many years until his retirement. He was a past president of International Longshoremen Union #1259. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #19 North Sydney. Lloyd was a faithful and active member of St. John the Baptist Anglican Church serving as former warden, vestry clerk, envelope secretary and regional representative for the Anglican Young People Association. He was very focused in the audio (tape) ministry, where he would copy the Sunday services for the shut-ins week after week. Lloyd sorted and hand delivered the church mailings, was a member of the Brotherhood of Anglican Churchmen. He was active in the scout movement, an avid bowler, enjoyed travelling, listening to live music and spending time in the country at the cottage. Lloyd is survived by his wife of 65 years, Flo (Matthews) Hare; his daughters, Ferne (Jim) Austin, Skye Glenn, N.S., Lois (Len) Hannan, Carvel, Alta.; his sons, Rupert (Yolanda) Hare, Florenceville, N.B., and Arthur (Lea), Bryson-Hare, Sundre, Alta. Lloyd is survived by 12 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews. Lloyd was the last surviving member of his immediate family, he was predeceased by brothers, Doug, Edward, Les, Berkley, Sanford and Alphonses 'Tiny', who was killed serving overseas during the Second World War, also his sisters, Kathleen and Hazel. Visitation for Lloyd was held from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Monday in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. Online condolences may be sent to www.wjdooley.com Winston Andrews Born In: Glace Bay Born: August 17th, 1940 Passed in: Glace Bay Passed on: October 13th, 2013 Winston, who was a kind and gentle man passed away peacefully on Sunday, Oct. 13, 2013, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital. Born in Glace Bay, he was a member of Warden United Church. He was the son of the late William and Elizabeth (Brindley) Andrews. Winston, in his early years, worked for Toronto Peterborourgh Transport, and also belong to the Teamsters union. Winston is survived by his sister, Mary Thelma Pyke, P.E.I.; and many close friends, especially Audrey and Sherman Buckler and Jennie, Annette, also with the staff of Goldsil Jewellers of Glace Bay. Beside his parents, he was predeceased by his sister, Willena. Winston loved music, especially Hank Williams, and played the piano and guitar. Winston adored his cats Mittins and Sabastion. The family is very grateful to the caring staff of 4B & 4E Palliative Care at the Cape Breton regional Hospital. Eugene 'Hugh' Francis Wade Born In: Sydney Mines Born: July 2nd, 1947 Passed in: Howie Centre/Sydney Mines Passed on: October 11th, 2013 It is with broken hearts that we regretfully announce the peaceful passing of our beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother and best friend, Hugh Francis Wade, at home, on Friday, Oct. 11, 2013, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Sydney Mines on July 2, 1947, he was the youngest son of the late Michael and Annie (Steele) Wade. In his early years, Dad worked in the Princess Mine alongside his father, and also sailed with Canada Steamship Lines for many years. Prior to his retirement from Devco, he worked in both the Lingan Mine and the Prince Mine, where he developed many life-long friends. For many years he could be found on the ball field coaching Little League teams. Dad had a love of sports, and spent much time sitting in front of the TV cheering for the New York Yankees or the Montreal Canadiens. He grew up with a love of music, and could be found with a guitar in hand. It was always a good time in the kitchen when Dad was playing his guitars or telling stories of the adventures of growing up in Cranberry. Most recently, he could be found walking along the Sydney Boardwalk with Mom at his side. He is survived and will be deeply missed by his loving wife of 40 years, Linda (Merritt); his daughters, Kathy (Brian) McPhee, Howie Center, Cindy, Howie Center, and his sons, Michael (Shannon Young), Ft. McMurray, and Kevin, Sydney River. He is also survived by a special daughter, Tracey Wade, Sydney. He was the greatest Grampy ever to Jeremy and Jessica Wade, Ryan and Miranda McPhee, MJ Wade and Luke Anderson. Also surviving is his brother, Michael (Beverly) Wade, Sydney; brothers-in-law, Jack and Ken Merritt, both of Truro; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Dad will also be missed by his many close friends. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his sister, Beverly Sollazzo, brother-in-law, Jim Sollazzo, maternal and paternal grandparents, mother-in-law Agnes Merritt, and many aunts and uncles. As per Dad's wishes, cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held today (Tuesday, Oct. 15, 2013) from 7-9 p.m. in J. M. Jobes Funeral Home, 635 Main St., Sydney Mines. A celebration of dad's life will take place on Wednesday at 10 a.m. in St. Joseph Church, North Sydney, with Fr. Patrick O'Neill officiating. The burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery.
