She was born in Glengarry, Mabou on February 15th, 1919 and was the daughter of John Andrew and Mary Cassie (Cameron) MacDonell. Janet was a member of St. Peter's Parish, Port Hood, and a lifetime member of the CWL. Her Catholic faith was a great comfort to her. She prayed the rosary daily, not only for herself but for others. She worked as a cook at the Skye Motel in Port Hastings and at Mary's Hill Home, Mabou, for many years. She also worked as a caregiver for the elderly in Boston. Janet's home was always open to family and friends, and was filled with songs, music and the best tea you could ever imagine. She was a classy lady who was particularly conscious about her appearance, especially her hair. After the death of her husband, she brought up her six children alone and later helped to raise three grandchildren. She faithfully sponsored World Vision children over the years, and her family came first and foremost. Janet was a strong advocate of the Gaelic language. It was a joy to hear her speak and sing it so well. After being diagnosed with macular degeneration, she eventually lost her sight but remained in her own home until the age of 90. Her sharp wit, big laugh and ability to accept and conquer life's obstacles will be a legacy to us all. She is survived by her sons, Greg (Sharon), Ajax, ON; Brian (Linda), Halifax; daughters Arlene (Dan Hughie), Judique; Judy (Michael), Beaumont, AB; 19 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren; brothers Angus Anthony (Edriz), Burnaby, BC; Alex Duncan (Frances), Mabou; Rod (Rita), Niagara Falls, ON; Lawrence (Charlotte), Edmonton, AB; sisters Rita (Jim) McClinchey, Dearborn, MI; Colena MacMillan, Judique; Annie MacLellan, Mabou; sisters-in-law Betty MacDonell, Niagara Falls, ON; Rita Boyd, Antigonish; Helen MacMillan, Scarborough, ON and many nieces and nephews.
