Born in New Waterford, he was a son of the late William and Margaret (Dauphinee) Ruelland. He was employed for 38 years as a coal miner in Nos. 12 and Lingan Colliery. He was a member of both the United States Trotting Association and Standard Bred Canada for over 60 years. An avid horse lover, he owned, trained and drove many horses. If he wasn't at the races or in his barn telling stories, he could be found with his grandchildren, whom he adored dearly. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Surviving are his wife of 58 years, Shirley (Wilkinson); sons, Kevin (Barbara), Glace Bay, Gordie, Alberta; daughters, Cindy (Ray), Lingan, Brenda (Greg), Halifax; seven grandchildren, Holly (Nick), Jessica, Sarah, Emily, Evan, James, Garrett (Jen); brother, Jules. Besides his parents, Eugene was predeceased by brothers, Willie and Peter, sisters, Anita, Mary and Viola in infancy. Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held Friday, Nov. 1 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. A funeral service will take place Saturday, Nov. 2 at 11 a.m. in the funeral home chapel with Deacon Leo Penny officiating. Walter Turner Born In: New Haven Victoria County Passed in: Dartmouth Passed on: October 29th, 2013 Passed away peacefully on Tuesday, Oct. 29, 2013, in Camphill Veterans Memorial Building, QE II. Born in New Haven, Victoria County, Walter was the son of the late Alfred and Mary 'Minnie' (Burrage). He enlisted in 1942 in the Canadian Army and served overseas in the Continental Armoured Corps Division. He re-enlisted in 1946 to 1953 and served with NATO. The most important things in Walter's life were his wife, his family, fiddle music, politics and he was well known for his ability to build anything and everything. He is survived by his wife of 65 years , "his girl" Mary (Dixon); children, Anne Rambeau, Smelt Brook, Linda Conrad (Iver), Shubenacdie, Tom (Linda), Milford, Barbara Leslie (Albion), Grand Manan, N.B., Bryston, Dartmouth, Shirley Clark (Robert), Sackville, Carvell, Grand Manan, N.B.; sister, Lil Morse (Ken), Kingston; brothers, George (Theresa), New Haven, Alymer, New Haven; 19 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter. Dartmouth Chapel Katherine 'Carmelita' Young Born In: Dominion Passed in: Glace Bay Passed on: October 28th, 2013 It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our wonderful mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend, Katherine Carmelita Young. Carmelita passed away at the Glace Bay Hospital with her loving family at her side on Monday, Oct. 28, 2013. Born in Dominion, she was the daughter of the late Neil and Pearl Ann (Crosby) MacKinnon and was a faithful member of St. Eugene's Church in Dominion. In her earlier years Carmelita enjoyed swimming and going to beaches with her family and friends. She was a stay-at-home mom, a job she truly enjoyed and was well known for making the best turkey dressing, caramel apples and her numerous pans of fudge. Mom was a very mild-mannered lady who always put the needs of others before the needs of herself. Carmelita will be fondly remembered for all the loving moments spent with her children and grandchildren, her family was her life. She will be sadly missed by her loving children, daughter, Charleen (David) Findon, Ont; sons, Darrow, Alberta, Allan, at home, Bill (Jackie), Glace Bay; eight grandchildren, three great-grandchildren; sisters, Dorothy MacKinnon, Dominion, Rose McIsaac, Ontario; numerous nieces, nephews and friends. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her loving husband, Tim Young; brothers, Allan, Clarence, Charles and a sister, Audrey. In honouring Mom's wishes there will be no visitation. A funeral mass will be celebrated 11 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 31, 2013, at St. Eugene's Church, Dominion, with Fr. Daniel Boudreau officiating. Interment will follow in the parish cemetery. Joseph Campbell Born In: Glace Bay Passed in: Glace Bay Passed on: October 28th, 2013 It is with heavy hearts and fond memories we announce the passing of Joseph Campbell, 79, of Reserve Mines. Joseph passed away on Monday, Oct. 28, 2013 at the Glace Bay Hospital. Born in Glace Bay, Joseph was the son of the late Joseph and Elizabeth (Hest) Campbell. Joseph was a member of St. Joseph's Church, Reserve Mines. He was employed in the construction field for 35 years. He was a quiet and gentle man, who always put family first and will be sadly missed by all. Joseph is survived by his daughters, Colleen (Hughie) Ellsworth, Ann (Bobby) Mills; cherished grandchildren, Michael Ellsworth and Amanda Mills; sister, Marie (Barry) Irvine and sister-in-law, Helen Campbell. Kathleen MacDonald Born In: Queensville Born: July 6th, 1929 Passed in: Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed on: October 28th, 2013 We are deeply saddened by the passing of our dear mother and grandmother, Kathleen (Catherine) Marie MacDonald who died on Oct. 28, 2013 surrounded by her family at the Queen Elizabeth II Hospital, Halifax. Born on July 6, 1929 in Queensville, Inverness County, Kathleen is the daughter of the late Dougald Sandy John Peter MacDonald, Creignish Rear and the late Kate Jesse MacEachern, Glenora, Cape Breton. Kathleen had a steadfast faith and love in God. Kathleen had other defined values that guided her and her family throughout life such as success through education and a strong sense of family and family supporting one another. She loved to spend time in her garden in Westmount and pick berries with family. She was extremely proud of her cultural heritage and Gaelic language. She especially enjoyed Celtic Music Festivals. With the passing of her mother in her early childhood, she played an instrumental role in caring for her younger siblings and attending to farm chores. We will always cherish the many special celebrations with family music. Kathleen was a wonderful mother and will be missed dearly by her family. Kathleen was married to the late Lawrence Vincent MacDonald, son of the late Duncan Francis and Mary Rebecca (Mamie) MacDonald, formerly of Troy. Kathleen had 10 children and 25 grandchildren. Their daughters are: Kate Martin (Tom), Halifax, and their children, Jessica and Gabrielle; Carol DeYoung (Jimmy), Halifax, and their children Melanie, Genevieve, Carol Ann and James; Sharon Morash (Kenny), Halifax, their child Kendra; Pauline MacDonald, Halifax, her children Emilee and Daniel; Carmel MacDonald (Doug), East Mountain, her children Kelton and Brodie and Brenda Murray (Bill), Halifax, and their children Nicole and Kathleen. Their sons are: Dr. Lawrence (Lornie) MacDonald (Jean), Rothesay, New Brunswick, and their children Kyle, Shannon, Riley and Colin; Francis MacDonald, Queensville; Alvin MacDonald (Raylene), Cole Harbour, and their children Kaitlin, Aislin and Devin; and Brian MacDonald (Jennifer), Antigonish, and their children Anna, Olivia, Brienne, Abigail and Mark. Kathleen is survived by a brother, Alex MacDonald, Kingsville. She was predeceased by her sister Ann MacDonald, Westmount, and brothers, Francis and Donnie MacDonald, Queensville. Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late George and Marcella (Mugford ) Simmons. Fred belonged to the Boiler Maker's Union and worked many years throughout the Martimes. He also worked as a coal miner and was a member of the Reserve Pensioner Club. He belonged to Gordon United Church. Surviving are his wife, Verona (Matheson ); sisters, Marcella Angelo, Florence Turner, both of Glace Bay; brother, George 'Sonny', also from Glace Bay. He will be sadly missed by his many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by parents, brothers, Calvin, William, Warrick, Alfred, James, sisters, Miriam Gillis, Delsie Simmons and Effie Gaskell.
