Evans - 87 yrs John Weir Born In: Sydney Mines Passed in: Sydney Mines Passed on: September 29th, 2013 It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of John Francis Weir on September 29th 2013, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital as a result of injuries sustained in a fire. Born in Sydney Mines, he was the son of the late Jim and Annie Weir. John was employed with CN Marine/Marine Atlantic until his retirement in 1998. During his retirement years he kept busy working, offering his services hauling coal, metal and anything he could fit in his truck. From building his home to mechanical repairs, Johnny was known to everyone as an all around handy man. He also enjoyed the company of his grandchildren and great grandchildren. John is survived by his wife Gloria; son John David (Lisa); daughters Gloria, Debbie (Peter) and Cheryl Clark; ten grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren as well as three sisters Marilyn, Shirley and Beverly. Besides his parents John was predeceased by a brother Melvin. Cremation has taken place, under the care and direction of J.M. Jobes Funeral Home, Sydney Mines . A service to celebrate John's life will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, October 3rd, 2013 at Carman United Church Sydney Mines, with Rev. Nick Phillips officiating. Burial to follow at Brookside Cemetery. Donations in John's memory may be made to Cape Breton Regional Hospital Foundation or a charity of one's choice. Elma Cantwell Born In: Florence Passed in: Little Bras d'Or Passed on: September 30th, 2013 After a long life of caring for others, Mae was called by her Lord to come to rest with him, on September 30, 2013, surrounded by her loving family at the Northside General Hospital. Born in Florence, she was the daughter of the late Lemuel and Euphemia (King) Ferguson. Mae was a lifetime member of St. Joseph Church Bras d'Or. She was happily married to Con Cantwell for 63 years, they had ten children together. An extra mouth or two to feed might seem like an impossible task to many, but not to Mae. If you ended up on her doorstep along the highway in Bras d'Or you never left hungry and were always welcomed back because the teapot was always on. Mae is survived by sons Connie (Pauline), Brian (Ann), Blair (Jean). Daughters, Gloria (Johnny) MacIntyre, Joan (Ronnie) MacDonald, Arlene (Sylvain) Lemire, Roxanne (Neil) MacLean, Karen (David) Marsh, Avril (Pete) Caldwell, as well as many grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and extended family members whom she loved. Besides her parents, Mae was predeceased by her husband Con; daughter Gail and grandson Calvin MacDonald; brothers Earl, Murray (Junior), and Ronnie; and sister, Thelma MacDonald As per her wishes there will be no visitation, arrangements are under the care and direction of J.M. Jobes Funeral Home, Sydney Mines. A mass to celebrate her life will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 3rd , 2013 at St. Joseph Church Bras d'Or with Fr. Peter McLeod Officiating. Kurt Penasse Born In: Sydney Passed in: Medicine Hat, Alberta, Canada Passed on: September 26th, 2013 It is with broken hearts that we the family announce the sudden passing of our dear son, brother, father, uncle and friend, Kurt Penasse on Sept. 26, 2013, in Medicine Hat, Alta. Born in Sydney, he was the son of Mrs. Margaret Sanson and the late Charles Penasse. He was an insulator by trade, enjoyed music, playing the guitar, and he was an avid reader. Besides his mother Marg and stepfather, Bill Sanson, Kurt is survived by his wife, Jessica Suidan; daughter, Ashya Muller Penasse; brothers, David Penasse, Brandon, Man., Christopher Penasse, Edmonton, Alta.; stepbrothers, Bill (Nicole) Sanson, Halifax, Ivan Sanson, Fredericton, N.B.; nephew, Easton; as well as many aunts, uncles, and cousins. Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held at the S.W. Dorothy MacPhee (Stevens) Born In: Colchester County Passed in: Eskasoni Passed on: September 28th, 2013 Dorothy Mae MacPhee, 68 of 3588 Eskasoni Road, Islandview, Eskasoni, passed away Saturday, September 28, 2013 at her home. Born in Colchester County, she was the daughter of the late Dan K. and Mary Jane (Gould) Stevens. She was a member of Holy Family parish, Eskasoni. Dorothy had a passion for gardening and always enjoyed her pilgrimage trips to St. Anne de Beau Pre. She is survived by her husband Stephen; daughters Laura 'Lulu' Marshall; Holly Paul, both of Eskasoni; Georgette (Paul) Phillips, Millbrook; son, Glen, Sydney; stepsons Darren Joseph 'Jody' (Jean) MacPhee, Islandview; Duncan (Rhea) MacPhee, P.E.I.; stepdaughters, Kim (Albert) Hines, Howie Centre; Judy MacPhee (Lorne Martin), Sydney; sister; Dolores (Ian) Brookes, P.E.I.; brothers; Roger (Marg) Stevens; Ralph (Belinda) Stevens; Walter (Mary Jane) Stevens; Vincent (Sue) Stevens; Bertram 'Muin' (Annette) Bernard; Francis 'Gubble' Stevens, all of Eskasoni; Lloyd (Rhonda) Mosey, N.B. and by 13 grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Dorothy was predeceased by a foster brother Alan Pierro; sister Sharon Googoo; granddaughters Rhea Mae Bernard and Angela Elizabeth Marshall and son-in-law Alfred 'Atji' Marshall. Visitation for Mrs. MacPhee will take place on Thursday after 7 p.m. at the Gabriel Centre, Eskasoni. Funeral mass will be celebrated on Saturday, October 5 at 10:30 a.m. at Holy Family Church with Rev. Martin MacDougall officiating. Interment in the parish cemetery, Eskasoni. Evans will be held Saturday at 1:30 p.m., October 5, 2013 at St. John the Baptist Anglican Church, North Sydney with Rev. Carl Fraser officiating. Berkley passed away Tuesday July 23, 2013 at the Harbourview Hospital, Sydney Mines. Interment will take place at Lakeside Cemetery, North Sydney. Arrangements are entrusted to W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney.
