    1. Re: [NS-CB] ancestory.com advice
    2. Thank you Bill, this is a lot of good advice. I created the 3rd tree related to the Stewart family for a friend. Years ago I had created an Ancestry account with so much information when I had a 3 month free membership. I am unable to find that tree now. Maybe it was not kept being about 10 years ago and with a free membership. I also linked with many other members, not like it is now. This time I wasn’t so lucky and can’t seem to find many connections. Likely due to, as I am hearing, so many people are privatizing their information. I am going to reactivate my account soon and use the resources given to me by you and the list. I have access to Ancesty.com but very limited through my familytreemaker possibly because I synced familytreemaker with Ancestry when my Ancestry account was active. Thank you for looking into this for me. I have created a new tree on FamilySearch and really enjoy that site but have a long way to go. But again it’s nice to start with a clean slate and refresh. I am not sure if I have seen the Rootsweb World Connect project. I’ll go google that right after I send this out. I am not good at searching the site Scotlands people. I am frustrated with the limited information I have regarding my MacDonald ancestors. It states they are from Ruaidh, Lochaber and I’m not sure where that is although so many tell me is is Roybridge, Lochaber I’m not convinced and even if they could have been there briefly prior to their emigration. I’m not sure where to start but below is the information I would need to start. The Mabou Pioneers Vol 1 pg 484 states list my ancestors as “MacDonald Glencoe “Aonghas Mac Ghilleasbuig” and his wife Mararet MacDonald (unsure if this is her married or birth last name?) But this would be a marriage I could search the church records however they were Catholic so there probably is no documentation of their marriage around 1800. They had 3 sons and 5 daughters prior to their emigration from said “Ruaidh, Lochaber Scotland about the year 1822”. That would be another place to look for births and baptisms but they are Catholic and between 1801-1820. One son died in Scotland. I’m not sure about the death records or burial records in Scotland in that time either. It states that they landed near South West Mabou (does this mean their ship or their settlement?) they later moved to Glencoe where they settled and took up land near Glencoe Chapel. I’m not sure where Glencoe Chapel was but I believe I read somewhere else as it being referred to as Glencoe hill?? Possibly Glencoe church is seated here now? I have yet to travel to both Nova Scotia and Scotland so I personal do not know. The names of Angus’ Children are listed as the following but what are the chances of me finding them using Scotlands People at that time? 1. ANGUS"AONGHAS MAC GHILLEASBUIG"1 MACDONALD was born Abt 1779 in Ruiadh,Lochaber,Scotland"MP 484". He married MARGARET MACDONALD. She was born 1780. Children of ANGUS"AONGHAS MACDONALD and MARGARET MACDONALD are: 2. i. ARCHIBALD"GILLEASBUIG MOR"2 MACDONALD, b. Abt 1801, "MP 484". ii. ALEXANDER"JOHN" MACDONALD, b. Abt 1802; d. Scotland. (son that died prior to their emigration) 3. iii. ANGUS"AONGHAS OG" MACDONALD, b. Abt 1803. 4. iv. HUGH"AONGHAS MAC 'ILLEASBUIG" MACDONALD, b. Abt 1805, ."MDHIC 239,MP 490". 5. v. CHRISTINA"AONGHAS" MACDONALD, b. Abt 1807. vi. FLORA MACDONALD, b. Abt 1808. 6. vii. MARGARET MACDONALD, b. Abt 1809. 7. viii. MARY"AONGHAS MAC ILLEASBUIG" MACDONALD, b. Abt 1820, Scotland. 8. ix. CATHERINE"AONGHAS MAC 'ILLEASBUIG" MACDONALD, b. Abt 1806. Thank you and everyone for all your help and input! On one part of the page it tells me that you have three trees - the two you listed and another; it also says that you have been a member since 2012 and have not logged in for nine months. Elsewhere it says that you logged in two days ago... When you post your tree to ancestry, as a public tree, it can be viewed by anyone logged into ancestry. If you want your tree to be available to someone that is not an ancestry member, may I suggestthe Rootsweb World Connect project. Using ancestry as a resource is good because of the amount of data that they have but personally I don't like their search engine. Family Search is good and is free, and you might try Scotlands People. On Sat, Oct 26, 2013 at 10:04 AM, <[email protected]> wrote: Hello list! I am wondering about the ancestry.com website and how it works after you deactivate your account through non-payment and plan to reactive in the future. Currently my account is deactivated and my user name is MacDonald_Suzanne. I am wondering while I have limited access to my information on the site I can still log on through my family tree maker, view my family trees and at times send and receive messages to other users. I am wondering if anyone else can view my trees? I have one McDonald Family Tree and another tree named MacDonald. Can someone with access to Ancestry.com let me know if they can see these trees? Or my account? I will be activating my account soon but before I do I would like some advice as to other family finding websites that I could use? I am not literate with Ancestry.com at all although I did add quite a bit of information and find many ancestors. I have been told by a few members not to use ancestry.com because by doing so I am giving up my rights and information to them but personally if others can see my information and connect to it, that is what I want. If I ever publish a book, it will be for family and to be shared. Thank you and any advice and information is welcome to this enquiry and the information there in. Thank you kindly, Suzanne McDonald Welland, ON. ___________________________________________ nsroots mailing list [email protected] http://mailman.ednet.ns.ca/cgi-bin/listinfo/nsroots ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to [email protected] with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message -- Bill Nicholson Fraser Lake BC
