Dad was born in Glace Bay, the son of the late Norman and Sadie (Gillis) McInnis. Dad was a member of St. Paul's Presbyterian Church, Glace Bay. He worked for Devco for more than 40 years. In his younger years, Dad was active in sports and was well known as a hockey official and baseball umpire. He spent many years enjoying his summer home in Loch Lomond, his favourite place to be with family and friends. Joe was a veteran of the Second World War and a member of the Royal Canadian Legion branch 40, No. 11, Glace Bay, and then branch 3, Glace Bay. Dad was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Dad is survived by his wife of 64 years, Ada (Attwood) of New Waterford; his six children, Peter (Vivian), JoAnn (Bill White), Jody (Debra), Joanie, Bruno (Cindy) and Stephen (Tammy). Joe will be sadly missed by his grandchildren, Gail, Aaron, Korri, Courtney, Kayleigh, Joseph, Matthew, Josh, Jeremy, Robert, Nolan, Darian, Kaydon; great-grandchildren, Allana, Samantha and Gregory. Besides his parents, Dad was predeceased by his brothers, Norman, Angus, Donald, Peter, and his only sister, Wilma (Aubrey MacDonald). At Dad's request there will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place. A funeral service will be held on Friday at 2 p.m. in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home Chapel, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. Interment will follow in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens. As an expression of sympathy for Joe, memorial donations in his memory may be made to the N.S. Heart & Stroke Foundation or the cancer society. Rita Annette Critch Born In: Sydney Born: August 23rd, 1923 Passed in: Whitney Pier Passed on: November 23rd, 2013 It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we, the family, announce the passing of our mother, and grandmother, Rita Annette Critch on Saturday, Nov. 23, 2013, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, surrounded by her loving family. Born in Sydney on Aug. 23, 1923, Rita was the beloved daughter of the late Michael and Lillian (Robbins) MacIntyre. Rita was a member of The Salvation Army Church, Home League and Pensioner Club. Family was everything to Rita. She loved to entertain everyone with her cooking and baking. Rita will be remembered by her family and friends for being strong-willed and independent. An outdoorsman to his core, he was happiest in nature, by a lake or river, with a fishing pole in hand. He was a behind the scenes kind of guy, always quick to lend a hand, always staying out of the spotlight and always helping someone. Born in Sydney, he was the son of the late Hubert and Ivy Jackson, Sydney River. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Georgina 'Fluff'(Yates); sons, Ralph (Teresa), Alan; daughters, Janice (Andrew Terris), Barb (Weldon Ferguson); his favourite granddaughter, Natasha (Evan McMaster); grandsons, Stephen, Adam, Scott and Nicholas Jackson, Logan and Kyle Ferguson.; great-grandchildren, Lachlan 'Buster' and Rowan McMaster, sister, Bertha (Benedict). Margaret peacefully passed away at home with her loving family at her side on Friday, Nov. 22, 2013. Born in Glace Bay, Sept. 13, 1922, she was the daughter of the late Michael and Nora (Ling) McNeil, Margaret was a devout Catholic and was a faithful member of St. Anne's Church in Glace Bay. Margaret especially enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren and her great-grandchildren, who were her pride and joy. In her younger years she was involved in the home and school program and the CWL. She had great joy baking apple pies and singing. She also enjoyed playing cards, bingo and taking daily drives. Born in Sydney, she was a daughter of the late Murdock and Bertha (MacAulay) MacAskill. Gladys was a member of Trinity United Church, Whitney Pier. She was actively involved in the Whitney Pier Seniors Club as past president. Gladys enjoyed many years singing with the Vonnie MacEachern Singers as an original member. Surviving are her sister, Erma MacLean, Sydney; daughter-in-law, Elizabeth Powell, Miramichi, N.B.; step-granddaughters, Tisha and Laurie; several nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. Born in Scotland on April 22, 1921, she was the daughter of the late Alexander and Mary (McShane) Baxter. In her early years, she immigrated to Canada with her family. In 1947 she married John T. Jobes and together they raised seven children. She was a longtime member of St. Stephen parish in Florence, and recently, a member of Holy Family parish in Sydney Mines. She was also a member of the Bras d'Or and District Senior Citizens and Pensioners Club. Left to mourn her loss are her four sons, Philip (Shirley), Jackie (Debbie), Gregory (Judy), and Ralph; three daughters, Catherine, Pauline and Patricia (Dave) Porter. She is also survived by sisters, Rose MacIntosh and Mary Cashin; a brother, William (Edith); 12 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. John Curran Born In: Sydney Passed in: Sydney Passed on: November 21st, 2013 John Joseph Curran, of Victoria Road, Sydney, passed away with his loving family by his side on Thursday, November 21, 2013, at the Halifax Infirmary. Born in Sydney, he was the son of the late John and Pauline (Flynn) Curran. For 45 years, John worked for Cape Breton Beverages, retiring in June 2011. He enjoyed many pleasures in life such as, dancing, bowling, fishing, playing pool and camping out on the Mira, where he spent many summers with his Burkes Campsite family. John is survived by the love of his life and best friend, Linda 'Hun'; daughter, Deanne (Greg) Corbett, Sydney; sons, Troy and Michael, at home, as well as his four precious grandchildren, Ethan, Stephen, Madison and Keagan, who he loved to spend quality time with every day. Words cannot express how wonderful a poppy he was. He is also survived by his brother, Bill, Sydney; sisters, Helen (Junior) Ferguson and Annie (Terry) Gushue, both of Sydney; and many nieces and nephews. John was predeceased by his brother, Paul in infancy and sisters, Catherine Leclerc and Mary Hawco. There will be no visitation. Born in Pictou, Mary was the daughter of the late Alfred and Ida (Ranson) Murphy. She worked for a number of years as a chef at the Town House Restaurant and then Jaspers. She was a very hard worker who will always be remembered for her devotion to her family, her great sense of humour and more than giving nature. Mary loved spending her summers in Iona as well as visiting her friends at the Seniors Complex in Dominion. She always put others needs ahead of her own. She is survived by her loving and devoted husband, Frank Mackie of 47 years; her two daughters, Debbie MacLeod (Al), Dartmouth, Mary Francis (Trevor) Ponee, Fall River; and her son, Billy Mackie, Calgary. She loved her grandchildren, Cameron, Kelsey, Aidan, Tristan, Matteus, Ava and 'rotten spoiled' them dearly. Mary is also survived by her brother, Jim Murphy (Jenny), Dominion; sisters, Patsy MacDonald, Dominion, and Sheila Boland (Elton), Kitchener. Mary will be sadly missed by her many nieces, nephews and friends. She was predeceased by her brother-in-law, Robert MacDonald (Dominion).
